A1 transport,leeds

Nice to see the sight been used once again, if Motlyka is interested he could join us at our next reunion, in fact anyone who’s interested can join us, we may be only a small bunch but the crack can be interesting, that last picture Keith put in of Jack Lane shows how far A1 went from scratch to being one of the biggest Haulage companies in the country to what it was when JMR sold out, I’m still trying to work out where and when to have the reunion next time, I’m trying to have it closer to the old yard in Gildersome late in September, but if anyone else has any ideas they would be greatfully received. :- Jack.

Good morning men and Les Pullan.lovely weather here in Blackpool blue sky and sunshine not dark like Bradford! Watched a good tv programme last night on Quest about a Bristol firm called Kings who do heavy haulage. Its repeated this morning at 11am and its called Supertruckers, then repeatedon on Monday at 8pm, then Thurs at 8pm, then a new episode on Friday at 9pm.Well worth watching much better then Eddie Stobart and a moron called Mark Dixon,Mark? I would like to Mark him for life!!! Got to go out now and denote some cash for sick horses, trouble is I don’t know they are sick when I back them.

Saw the program myself, your right it was better than Stobarts fiasco, at least it wasn’t staged it was as it is, it was a nice change to seeing American and Australian trucking programs, I hope it doe’s them some good, far better than the other program of the idiot ammatur’s competing for who’s doing the cheapest load, there just an embarrassment to the industry. Anyway your good weather in Blackpool is no better than where I am in Bedale, it may be a bit cold but the sun shines on us today too but I’m not bragging about it am I. Jack.

Now the fellas hope you are all keeping well? Could we have a reunion during the spring/summer for a change? Any thoughts :sunglasses:

At last some response to my question on the reunion, thank’s “collycoltas” it’s just what I needed another idea of what when and where to have our next reunion, I’m all for having a change, although it wont please everyone but every time we’ve had one there’s always some of our mates on holiday or other family commitments but the idea is to try get as many there as possible, I was hopping to try closer to the old yard at Gildersome next time, I have contacted Bruntcliffe Club just down the road from the yard but they asked for £100 for a room which is too much for our small band of merry men, I’m expecting about 25 30 turning up, the first one we did a few years back there were about 50 which included office staff and drivers, that was the best turn out we had, but they have been dwindling since then to about 20/30 which isn’t bad but but more would be better, so if you have any ideas please let me know, I’m open to anything from interested people like yourself including dates and places. Kind Regards :-Jack.

Just a small input Jack,if we take it out of Bradford a lot of the lads my not come, getting home ect,i know we put our selves out but they may not,but they do not come on here to ask, just me thinking aloud and getting the lads to come, keith

You may be right Keith, that’s why I’d like more input from everyone, I do know that lots of you put yourselves out to go to Bradford, I do the same from Bedale, it takes me over an hour to get down from up here in fact there are 2 of us from up here who always get bed-n-breakfast when we come down, but any comments are gladly accepted before we decide on our next plan. :-Jack. :unamused:

Nice picture of John Carter doing what he liked most, he was one of the best driver’s ever and a good mate too, went with him a few times to second man him, it was just sad his eye-sight let him down latter in his working life, it was a pleasure knowing him and to be with anywhere with.

Hi All. John Carter brings back memory’s a real nice guy. His nickname at A one was Hell of length,i did a few trips with John some mating and some driving. Happy Days.

Yes I remember him Keith, he had the F88 none sleeper cab 6 wheeler, he was also a good bloke, saw him once on the M62 nr Manchester hard shoulder he had the 4 in-line low loader with an aircraft tug on the back weighing about 40 ton’s, he had come from down South West M5 M6 M62, and had just blown the last tyre off, after 4 blow out’s, the problem was he had the tug right on the back end with the 40 ton all on the back wheels, Leeds office wasn’t amused, he’d blown all the profit on the job in tyres. :- Jack

Hi All. The guy you are talking about was called (Les Berry). He was at A1 before me and i started in 1968/1969 so he worked at A1 for many years. As i recall Les Berry & John Carter didnt always see eye to eye with each other. I hope this bit of information sheds some light on your query Keith.
