and Drivers I think.Your right it’s not “A One Transport {Leeds} Ltd”, it’s the wrong logo and A1 was all in red, but they do look like a nice fleet just the same, if you look at some of the other pages on A1 Transport you’ll see the old A1 logo on some of the photo’s.
Hi Jack,i think the name A One Transport was lucky for Jack Robinson only ,all the other ones that used it went bust, went on hols up to bednell nr seahouses ,back last week but took 4 hours to get home after a1 was shut.never mind having xmas in Whitby I was laughing to my self when I saw a postman in seahouses ,yes he was green and the shop owners too

I am trying to list all the Bradford and local hauliers from the 1960’s onwards and what became of them and would appreciate assistance from any former drivers as I spent 30 years in haulage from 1969 and worked at Henry Longs/A-One up until its demise under NJM’s rule. I believe that Fielding was bought by Chapmans then A-One, who also bought out Cliff Parrott and Henry Long. Didn’t Edwards join up with Jack Bell to become Edwards Bell then bought by Renwicks?? G.C.Morley joined with Johnny Ball to become Morley Ball?? did they all end up as A-One? I remember Forders; C.W. and N. Roe; John M. Young (who I drove for) took over Cyril Whitley then were taken over by Hudsons of Pudsey/James Shepherd - Hudson Shepherd. The list is endless but my memory unfortunately isn’t so I really do require former colleagues and ex-drivers to complete a full list of all these well known hauliers and what became of them.
Arthur Mitchell. Harry Baker. Roy Mitchell Bower Green, Hillams, S Mann, And others that I cannt remember as the brain is tired!!
A continuation from yesterday J Moran and Ashworths
I think H.Baker is now owned by Bower Greens , my dad , brother ,cousin and uncles all worked for Whitleys , most of them worked for Longs too ,infact my Grandad worked for Longs all his life ,ive worked with a few ex A One drivers , Tony Daynes , Jimmy Harrison , Pete McCurry , Lenny Schofield and Kevin Bedford , they all worked for Clive Coleman some long term some short term ,i
m not sure if Colin Craven worked for A One too no doubt someone on here will know

You’ll need to contact me Kieth if your stopping at Whitby for Christmas, I’m only an hour away from there, I wont be able to drink much because I’ll have to drive home but we can have a Christmas pint together, or at least a bag of chips, then we can talk about this in a sensible state, it’s a subject that so many of us can talk for ever about. :-Jack

You need to come to our next reunion, we have so much in common, WC Forders from Bingley are one firm that’s not mentioned any more JM Young and all the ones you remember, also there are so many names that have come out from the woodwork on this subject since you posted it, I remember all those firms and your right many of them did join up to form bigger companies, but they were all the old wool firms, Johnny Ball was first I remember him being on Backchurch Lane London, he was hauling wool from down there while we were doing it from up here, at times we loaded from him, but eventually he was bought out and joined Morley.
Also you have stirred up my brain cells reminding me of more drivers I’d forgotten from your post, so you really do need to keep in contact so we can get the next reunion going for 2015. :- Jack.
Just by some remote chance any of you guy’s read this,< I wish you all a merry Christmas and happy new year>. :- Jack Graham.
Hi Jack…and all those with Aone in their blood. Hope you all had a good and merry Christmas and are looking forward to a Healthy, Happy and Prosperous New Year. Dave…
Ps: Jack see there’s an old Chapman’s Seddon on the roping and sheeting feed, page 56, memories.
Pps: was down London couple weeks ago and had a look were the old blackfriars depot was. The Mitre pub at the top has gone and the arches are all upmarket restaurants. Time marches on…

Hi ddrbsn, that old Seddon didn’t look like that when I had it, it had a lid over the cab to carry another 10 bales, it also looked like almost new because it was looked after, I got it from Tommy Speight who had it from new, I think it was new at about 1960/61/62, but I got it about 1967, it loaded 110 singles with the Exrta 10 on the lid, top speed was 48mph up hill or down hill, but as usual Chapman was like Magee, he spoilt the company just like Magee spoilt A1, that’s why JMR bought it to join A1. :- Jack.

Hi Jack… Thought it looked a bit bare on top. Was it the one that ended up leaning against The Mitre Pub at the London depot? Mind when that lid was loaded they wallowed and dug into the corner’s camber something terrible. Must have been 1968, remember coming out of Winkleys Wharf turning left. If I hadn’t put it up onto the opposite kerb I’ve a feeling I might have lost it. Had Big Mick, from depot, in cab, don’t know who looked whitest.
After that, with ridgid’s, used to pull out at a slight angle then reverse back till I was on top of the camber before moving off, happy days though.
Know what you mean about Donald. Pity, if he’d had the business acumen of JMR things might have been different. He always seemed to be trying for the big deal but maybe was easily influenced or took advantage of.

Whoever planned the present day junction up there should be put up against a wall and shot. It’s a disaster. I defy anybody to approach it, get the correct lane, and come out the other side alive. Only yesterday I caused minor chaos (bloody lorry drivers blowing at me ) My lad works just up the road at Volvo truck and Bus and he says you can usually see an accident (not serious) any time, day or night.

The person who designed that junction, more than likely sat behind a desk pushing a pen and paper all day, and for his skills would be paid a King’s ransom and who never drives in the area, just like the people who designed the tower block’s that were pulled down 40 years later because they were unsafe.

Roundabout?? I can remember the days when it was just a simple crossroad controlled by traffic lights. 1961. There was a pub on the corner and for the life in me I can’t remember the name. The big retail park was a farm.
