Good afternoon men [and Les Pullen ! ] Don’t understand what has happened to this once popular site, all the people who worked for A one must have some interesting tales/ stories they could share with us. There is a guy called Truckyboy who has some really good stories about his time on the road.we could do with some of our former workmates sharing some of their life on the road here or over the water, so don’t let this site die a slow death ! Start posting the good/ bad times does anyone know the history of JMR and A ones early life?
Hi “Maxhagar” It looks like were the only ones looking at the A1 page now, may-be people have moved on from “Trucknet”, may-be they have grown too old, may-be they have lost interest, but one thing for sure every year we can still get a few of us together for another reunion to meet people in the flesh instead of using the internet, today I had a visit from Les Mullin and had a ride with him up into the North Yorkshire Dales where I live, it was a nice change to be out with him he’s a nice guy to be with, so it made my day for a change instead of me coming down to Bradford, so what ever happens to this page I will try do do my best to get us all together next year and hope to see you all again where ever it may be. Regards Jack.
AOne was a brilliant company to sub contract to if you were a small haulage company as we were. The work was good, and suited us fine. The AOne drivers were all great blokes to run with, and we enjoyed it very much. Unfortunately a person in the Transport Office decided to start changing things around to try to impress the Top Brass. This caused quite a few of us to earn less for the work we were doing. In our particular case, this person told a lot of lies to us, causing us to lose more than £2000, nearly causing us to close down. It was only because we had a good Bank Manager at the time, who helped us out that we survived. But we never ever did any more work for them. I hope that you Lads are able to keep your Annual Meetings going, I feel sure that you would have a very good evening, as all the Drivers that I met were Top Class Men. Is Les still the Top Side Band Radio Guru. I sat in his cab one day while we’re waiting to tip and he was getting contacts fro all over the World.

Thank’s for your comment Archie, your right about the drivers that’s why we have stuck together all these years, regarding the staff it depend’s when you pulled for us, because after Magee bought A1 out everything went ■■■’s up, he was the worst man ever to be in control of a haulage company, that’s why “all” the good staff left because he was such a prat to work for, the staff in the office had to put up with him all day long, he had absolutely no idea of transport what-so-ever or how to run a company, that’s why every company he bought out went bust under his control, he was an asset stripper who bought companies took as much as he could out of them then went into liquidation, but you can bet your life if a member of staff caused you to loose £2000 because of working for A1 it was all Magee’s doing, he lost so much work because of his interfeering in the running and his arrogance to staff and customers they all left and took there business elsewhere, he was just one prat of a man who should never have been in charge of any company.
But as far as drivers go we had a good team who worked together, when it was the original A1 with JMR in control it was one of the biggest transport firm’s in the UK it all worked like a clock, everyone was happy “most of the time” except a few who only worked there for a few month’s, but in general it was the best firm I’d ever worked for and you can ask anyone who worked there and they will say the same, so thanks again for your input to our page on trucknet, your like many more I know who pulled for A1 who say the same about the company. Regarding “Les” yes he’s still doing his thing but he fly’s a Gyrocopter now, I was with him on Tuesday had a ride out with him to pick up something up in the Dales where I live he’d bought and yes we had a good natter about old times as usual, one thing for sure he’s a lot fitter than I am although he’s a bit older than me, it’s nice to keep in contact with work mates even after all this time, for example I’ll be seeing Dave Smith and Billy Parkinson next Tuesday at Elvington airfield where I’m helping with some speed trials, they’ve been before and we have a great time, but me being an old git now dont ride any more so I just keep my hand in by helping, I take my old caravan to have somewhere to kip in and a box of Tbags etc for the boy’s etc, so yes another couple of day’s with old work mates it helps to make the world go round. Kind Regards :-Jack Graham.

One small quote “Archie”, you can tell a good firm when you look at how long the workers have been there, both drivers and office staff, most of us had been there for over 20 years and some even more, which tells a story on it’s own of what kind of company it was. :-Jack.
Yes Jack you’re completely correct ano ut judging a company by its long serving staff. When we were on for them most of the chaps had been there for a good few years, some even longer than that. The chap that was in charge of the traffic office was Geoff Wilkinson, a really great bloke he was, he had been there for a good few years, I believe he was from the Wool Store in Bradford. He had the job of sorting out the mess that had been thrust upon us, I felt very sorry for him as it was not his doing but he had to do the sorting out. Billy Parkinson, what a great character he was, does he still go over to America each year and dress like a Cowboy. I hope you all enjoy your day at Elvington even if you don’t get f.t.d.

Just spent a couple of hours surfing the net when I came across a photo of Jack Ellener with a Marston Radiator TK. You can find it on page 5 of the Bedford KM site.

Hiya,
Not being cheeky but there is an outfit knocking about called Alltransport could that
not be misread to read A1transport, just a thought.
thanks harry, long retired.
Hi to anyone, has A1 dropped off the end of the earth again, or has all interest gone for another few month’s, just to let anyone know I’ll still be doing another reunion next year, but will be looking for a new location, may-be a quiet working men’s club or somewhere like that in the Bradford area or even Leeds area, if anyone has any ideas of where we can make a booking please don’t be afraid of letting me know on this page, that’s if anyone reads it before next April when I’ll be making a start to get things in order. :-Jack.
PS Working Men’s Club’s are usually quiet these day’s and the beer is cheaper too and they usually can do with the business these days. :-Jack.
Good afternoon men,the site seems to be very quiet these days. Didn’t get the chance to go to JRMs funeral I would like to view the footage of it surely some of you have taped it. I would imagine it was quite a sad/happy occasion, sad to say goodbye to a wonderful person happy to renew old pals who you hadn’t seen for years.

Hi maxhagar, I think were the only two looking on this site recently, regarding JMR’s funeral I didn’t see anyone taking photo’s or movies, it was a very somber occasion, I didn’t count how many staff and driver’s who were there but the service in the cemetery was full and also was the wake where everyone talked about old times and memories of JMR, it was all very sad but also cheerful that we all had nothing but good to say about JMR and A1 except the demise of the company after he’d sold up and how sad it had all turned out, but regarding pictures of the funeral I don’t think there were any unless someone else took some, his family and grand children were there and it was all very nice to listen to them speak of him as a loving father and grandfather.
Regarding seeing old pals we see most of them every years at the reunion, I’ll also be doing it again next year, the dates etc will be posted on this page so I hope you can join us to carry on spilling diesel on the floor and talking about old times again. Regards :-Jack Graham
A different Mob altogether. A modern Fleet of Lorries. We were on the Forum for Old Time Companies
and Drivers I think.
Your right it’s not “A One Transport {Leeds} Ltd”, it’s the wrong logo and A1 was all in red, but they do look like a nice fleet just the same, if you look at some of the other pages on A1 Transport you’ll see the old A1 logo on some of the photo’s.
