A1 transport,leeds

It’s almost a month since the last message on A1 page, I’m wondering if it’s gone stale and everyone has had enough, so this will be the last time I’ll try organize the reunion, the only interest up to now is from the regulars who visit this page and who come every time, so I’m going to phone and email as many as I can get hold of to remind everyone of the date which is the 20th September at the Green Man Undercliffe Bradford at about 7-30 pm, but thanks to Stuart Broughton for all the help he has given by organizing the venue every year, had it not been for him it wouldn’t have happened, so here’s hopping to see as many as we can together on the 20th September. :-Jack Graham.

Thanks for that Kieth, I was getting to think this page was dead it’s such a long time since anyone looked at it, there are just a few who cant be there because of holidays etc, but it cant be helped, Alec Kinnion called me 2 day’s ago to say he cant be there because of holidays, and there are still a few I cant contact because I dont have any contact number’s, but my guess is there should be about 20/25 there so it wont be too bad and it’ll be nice to see you all once more and have a natter as usual, so see you there :-Jack.

Had an eventful week with West Yorkshire Police wanting to interview me in regards of a 30 year old murder on Carlisle Rd toilets one bank holiday. Used to play lots of football and one of the team thought I fitted the description of the person responsible, so for a laugh phoned my details in, some laugh!!! Told the wife I was driving down to London but in fact was taking one of our players mother out for the day. The police went to my house to question me but I was away down the road and the wife told them I was in London that bank holiday. They went to Fitzwilliam Street to ask Ronnie [The village idiot] of my whereabouts and he confirmed I was on holiday.Got interviewed over and over blood tested but nothing came of it but they wouldn’t let it go and every now and again they turn up like a bad smell. My pal is going on holiday this weekend so I am looking after his shack for a few weeks,£850 grand he paid for it,2 acres private fishing lake etc etc use of his Range Rover or 7 series BMW and a lady friend from Peter Borough coming for a holiday so sorry cannt make the reunion, I think most of the Parrott drivers are no longer with us but such is life.Hope it all goes well and a good night is had by all.

thanks jack and stuart, another good reunion     keith

I don’t know if any-one know’s the whole story of why Jack didn’t sell to the management, “except Jack himself”, but one thing I do know he was really upset at what happened to the company after Magee got his grubby hands on it, I think he went to his grave with regret’s , which is sad when you look at the drivers and staff who went to his funeral, he was a well respected man in his own right and the best boss I’d ever worked for.
:-Jack

I had the pleasure ?!?!? of working as assistant transport manager to Russell Hutchinson in 1970 at the Gelderd Road head office & then worked a few weeks in their office in Hunslet where they subbed out their spare work. The boss man ran round in a Rolls Royce and was as smooth as a bears arse. I am not sure if they went turtle or if they just died of old age.
The driver mentioned by West Ham Ram & Kate was known by most of the drivers doing Italy in the late 70’s & early 80’s as “Darky Donald” who proudly boasted about being pulled by the French & Italian Police & telling them that where he came from driving licenses didn’t exist. I met him in Prato in the resto at the station.

Good afternoon men [and Les Pullen ! ] Don’t understand what has happened to this once popular site, all the people who worked for A one must have some interesting tales/ stories they could share with us. There is a guy called Truckyboy who has some really good stories about his time on the road.we could do with some of our former workmates sharing some of their life on the road here or over the water, so don’t let this site die a slow death ! Start posting the good/ bad times does anyone know the history of JMR and A ones early life?

Remember A1 had offices all over. In the days of finding your own backload they would usualy fix you up. The rates were never brilliant but they allways paid up. Kept the gaffer happy. :exclamation:

They had a black American called Joe driving for them. I was in Barna when the US fleet was in. Two white US sailors tried something on him & he threw them both in the dock…

Je vais on France pour le vacance demain Harry hope nobody throws me of the dock when I`m waiting for the ferry

Bonnes vacances,Mon ami. Et ne touchez pas l’eau. Seulement le vin.

A1’s yard is now occupied by Sewel’s and sometimes used by Noddies.

The old trailer yard is now the multplex cinema and all those food places oppsite IKEA at the top of the M621/M62

I worked there 1972 for a short while in the workshops. Remember the rolls and the gaffer
