wot was the first truck you lads went over the water withi think a i can remember rubber neck doing Italy in a f86…must have had one of them wooden beds,remember big AL kinnon having a f86 6 legger on uk work,god knows how he slept on them
Mine was an F88 I took it over from Jack Broadbent when his wife gave him the hard word, and I gave him my Atkinson the one from Chapmans with the ■■■■■■■■ engine, I also had a second bed made and it was better than the bottom one because it had a real spring mattress to make life comfortable, then within about 6 months we all got new F88 290s.

arthur davies is my uncle he had scanias most of his time at aone will tell him about reunion when confirmed dates are sorted i told him about the last one but he was in scotland unfortunately
Keep looking on this page and tell him the date, the idea is to get as many ex A One drivers together as we can, we missed a few last year but now the word is getting around hopefully everyone will know, and that the reunion is for every ex employee from A One and not just the drivers, and we have to make sure that Tony Wood and Sing get themselves there too, for some reason they missed last year.

Hi Jack. Whilst the Bold Privateer is absolutly fine by me for obvious reasons (my son lives next door to it). But for anybody who is disabled such as Jack Tether there are no toilets for the disabled in the Bold privateer. Also it was mentioned that the landlady would put a group/band on. in my opinion that is not a good idea as you would’nt be able to hear yourself think,let alone talk to each other. I thought the last reunion was brilliant and maybe we should keep it like last years. I hope you don’t mind me pointing the above things out,but maybe they should be considered. Regards. (Alan)

Hi Jack, Great to see that the lads are getting together again. Any time in the year, for our 2011 REUNION will be fine (I am retired!)
I am NOT going on my EURO TOUR, as the wife has injured her knee badly. Also, I had run out of TACHO’S! So, cancelled ferry x’ing and all o/n’s, including a 2 night break at, THE HOTEL WEIN, in BUDAPEST. Do you all remember the place? We used to park up there for the w/e and go 50 yards away and get beer at about 40p a pint! 
I will contact TONY WOOD, he lives just up the road from me, once we get a date sorted.
Anyone remember the very tall lanky A ONE driver. He had a tendency to blow up engines!!! He once took my F88 that had just been serviced on a night trunk job. Blew the engine up. Then, when I came into the depot to set off for the continent, no truck! He had only blown his own truck up the day before! 
My Mercedes 1632 was the bees knees. I loved it. It would climb up the side of a house. And do 70 mph easily!!! I used to use the top bunk for storing my goods and shackles. (tilted backwards). I once put it in for a service, and when I came to collect it, I was told that my gas stove had shot straight through the windscreen when they tilted the cab!!!

Hi Stuart, sorry to hear about your wife, and spoiling your holiday for you, but it will mean you will have more money to spend on the lads at the reunion, but please give her my regards and hope the knee is not too painfull.
Regarding collecting money from Spain, I did it a few times from various agents, and I can tell you it was not as straight forward as that, most times I had to go to the American Bank on the Ramblers with a cheque to get it cashed and get the first taxi outside the door and back to the Zona Franca, and stash all the money out of sight inside the cab lining, had I been dishonest I could have pocketed some of it, because often quite a few thousand £ in the cab, it’s a good job they didn’t have the dog sniffers in Dover then, because there would have been some explaining to do from A One TIR office, “needless to say I didn’t get any bonus from Wilkinson for doing his dirty work”, it must have saved them a fortune not paying collectors 10% as they would have had to do.
Last year I contacted the Hotel Wien in Budapest and they said it had stopped trading, because it had been used as a brothel and the local authorities had closed it down, because of massive debit problems.

If the Matu Matu is the same one I remember, they went bust in the late 1970s, then the government took them over and then they bust them too, and there were thousands of trucks and trailers parked all over Spain, and few hundred parked in the Zona Franca, Wilkinson told me they had lost quite a few thousand from them and that’s why he was always asking us to collect money from other agents, because they were always late paying and he was frightened of losing more, He always told me not to load off them unless they paid for at least the last two loads they owed, and even then they still owed for a few more, we were not only drivers but A One’s free debit collectors too, but then you know what he was like, he never gave you anything for doing his dirty work.

Thanks Stuart, I dont think numbers will mean so much, even if we have more there than last time, because there was plenty left on the table after we had done, because the land lady did a great job so if there’s more than last time there will still be plenty of food for everyone including a few gate crashers.
Although I didn’t count how many were there last time, I reckon there were about 50 all together, so if there’s a few more it really wont make any difference, dont forget were there to talk and drink as we did last time.
Can anyone find Billy Parkinson’s new number, I think his last one is out of action. :-Jack.
