A1 North Yorkshire Closed Wed 12/9/12

Police have confirmed that the 38 year old driver killed yesterday was from Stockton.

He was employed by OWL - One World Logistics. BOC, whose products are transported by OWL, said that the OWL vehicle was on its way to one of their sites, carrying mainly medical products. “BOC is saddened to hear of this tragic incident.”

The 58-year-old driver of one of the other lorries, from North Lincolnshire, is being treated at Darlington Hospital. His condition is critical but stable.

One vehicle involved is confirmed as coming from Cardiff based freight company Rhys Davies.

Sad times :frowning: RIP fella

I use this stretch of road quite often and at the time of the collision too, I drove past this morning and in one on the small laybys there were three artics and the middle one was parked with his wheels on the white line, :open_mouth:

cieranc:
Mike, that’s almost what happened. PM sent.

Thats one of the reasons ive never fancied recovery work

Some of the lay-bys are a joke they need to be coned off for good!

A few times I have seen trucked parked up for the night and thought they had tipped into the hedges.

Also when people are parking up and going to sleep and not leaving any side light on… I think they are asking for trouble…

How many more like this will it take, before the planned (then cancelled) upgrade of this stretch between Leeming and Scotch Corner to motorway will actually happen?

Word is, the bottle guy hit a parked up combine harvester on back of lorry, got out to check, and the Rhys Davies truck hit him as he stepped out.

Very sad indeed, RIP. the driver who lost his life… the Rhys Davies driver is in a bad way too.

Ask the government to release the funds for it :bulb:

RIP to driver we lost.
I work with RDFl driver. It was his first week on the job working for RD. Experienced driver. Spoke to him on saturday. As of this morning he was still in a coma ( induced ). He is in critical condition with multiple fractures to his legs and whole body. Hope he pulls thru.

Was speaking with your gaffer, he said the driver had been on agency with you for ages and finally got on full time for the company this week. A sound bloke by all accounts.
As I understand it he’s got broken ribs, punctured lungs, broken legs, pelvis, spine, shoulder. He was induced into a medical coma for his own good.
His road to recovery will be a long one, We can only wish him well and hope he pulls through.

The local bbc news reported that the boc driver swerved to avoid a " deer like" animal and clipped the parked up combine harvester load. 5 miles later he stopped on the A1, a quarter mile short of the next layby, to check for damage. The RD truck then ran into the back of the boc vehicle.
It’s a poor stretch of road here. Not flat, straight or wide enough IMO. And as said earlier the layby sizes are a joke for large vehicles.

It did strike a combine which looked to be sticking out of the layby (hard to tell though) the second collision was not 5 mile after though more like quarter of a mile. I was surprised the gas one was the fatality as it had little cab damage but as said it looks like he got out. sad day indeed RIP

5 miles does seem a long way to drive before stopping in the road… :open_mouth: bloody reporters getting it wrong,
RIP to the fella and hope the other pulls thro, wonder if his intrest in his welfare will carry on aslong as the m1 crash the other week :unamused:

■■? I can’t see why not, this guy’s in a bad way and needs all the support he can get. If he pulls through and recovers, then at least something has been salvaged from this horrible mess.

Here’s hoping he pulls through.

ffs those are horrible injuries, no easy recovery from that lot :frowning:

All the very best to all concerned in yet another sad day of trucking…

Which is the one from North Lincolnshire? I read about this crash on the BBC website earlier. My dad and some good friends back home (North Lincolnshire) are truck drivers so it always resignates home when I read something like this.

Terrible news for all involved. If this doesn’t highlight the need (yet again) for proper truck parking, then what does?!

Rhys Davies driver is the one who survived, although he is still in critical condition. He ran out of DHL whse ( BP/Castrol ) is Scunthorpe ( RD Contract ). He is from Lincolnshire. Ex- Stobby.

I am a very close friend of the driver who was killed. It really was a tragic accident, he had 1 young son who was 5 last monday. I hope the driver of the RD driver makes a full recovery. Tragic news as well is police are telling the family they are charging the driver. Upsetting as it is, unless he was drunk then that seems very harsh.

My best wishes to his family and I really do hope he recovers.

When I had my accident in 2000, after I came out of hospital, the Police interviewed me at my late Mum’s house, and they said that they could have charged the driver I hit, as his wheels were measured at 4 inches outside the white line when I hit him. 4 inches. WTF.

I told them not to bother, as everyone had suffered enough.

Ken.

Given the terrible state he’s in it might seem harsh but at the end of the day it seems that he ran into the back of a stranded vehicle on a long, straight section of road without even attempting to slow down. He must have been either almost asleep or very distracted.

Any word on the RD driver?

These incidents are always difficult but I have to say in defence of the RD driver that road is neither straight or flat. Im usually on that stretch of road every day around 0430. The last thing I would expect is for someone to stop on the main road, there are plenty of laybys, poor as they are. If I saw someone stopped I would assume they were in a layby and carry on as normal. Let’s face it, nobody slows down on that part of the road so I would be doing 55mph or so, at night.
We don’t know what happened and chances are we never will, but this thing nowadays of having to find someone to blame really annoys me. It’s a tragic set of circumstances that has led to horrible times for all concerned.

+1

As I passed leeming the sign came on for accident ahead so I was looking out for a car in the hedge etc and its the first time I have noticed how really bad that section is not flat at all and really dark. At that time most of the laybys are full so not a lot of places to stop in the heat of the moment

from a good source i belive the boc driver had already put red warning triangles out while checking the load, and a few other lorrys passed ok, for some reason the RD lad hit the back of it. :frowning:
