i can only echo what people have said with regarde’s to the road design and hrs and to the family’s envolved.
good luck to the one in ICU, and the family of the deceased have my sympathy.
do we know what happened with the driver in the truck carrying the combine?
and what really boil’s my blood is the somwhere in every one of these “comment on this story’s”, is there’s one of these sad people who still wants to belive that beeching never happend, by saying put more freight on to the railway. the ECML is at 98% capicaty, we can’t put any more on it. , yeah i’d like to see more go on the rail’s, but due to beeching cut’s we don’t have a rail system anymore. and if we did, i don’t think every store and depot in the county could get a railconnection. so that would envolve 1, most likely 2 truck’s for every rail journey. FFS can these people take off the rose tinted glasses, and wake up and smell the coffee, and at the moment and for the forseeable future road transport is the only option.
the other thing is the “I WANT IT NOW” culture. store’s open 24/7. etc
it can take week’s to charter a train, mabe a month or so. you could charter a truck the same day mabe within the hr.
now as a company you can’t be waiting around for a train to turn up you want the good’s on the move…

Sad,very sad. Condolences to all those involved.
How much longer will they continue to build roads with not fit for purpose laybys. I know this stretch isn`t new but they are still building roads with laybys right by the side of them.
The stretch of dual carriageway in question was meant to be upgraded to motorway along with the recent upgrade from leeming - dishforth. They scrapped the plans. The result is a relatively short stretch if dual carriageway in the middle of a motorway link that everybody rightly or wrongly drives on as if its still a motorway. I have long thought that the narrow laybys on it arent safe and should be got rid of or made into proper laybys.
The picture of the Rhys Davies truck, is similar to mine after the crash I had in Feb 2000 on the TVTE in Gateshead.
I shuddered when I saw these pics, and apart from the deceased drivers family for whom I offer my sincere condolences, I do hope the other guys involved pull through.
When ‘philmots’ posted that the gas cylinder truck appeared to have little frontal damage my first thought was that the guy had maybe got out of the truck to see how bad things were and then his motor got hit
It’s beginning to sound like that’s what has happened.
The local bbc news reported that the boc driver swerved to avoid a " deer like" animal and clipped the parked up combine harvester load. 5 miles later he stopped on the A1, a quarter mile short of the next layby, to check for damage. The RD truck then ran into the back of the boc vehicle.
It’s a poor stretch of road here. Not flat, straight or wide enough IMO. And as said earlier the layby sizes are a joke for large vehicles.

It did strike a combine which looked to be sticking out of the layby (hard to tell though) the second collision was not 5 mile after though more like quarter of a mile. I was surprised the gas one was the fatality as it had little cab damage but as said it looks like he got out. sad day indeed RIP
another very sad day, RIP
there for the grace of god go any of us
could put loads more but im not to good at putting things into words and i know that some on here will crucify what i put
i deliver gas bottles and if he was checking his load on a flatbed with toxic substances on board and one went he woudnt lst 5mins never mind a fully freighted artic hitting you when on the frailer rip drivr condolences to the families
The story is that the cylinder driver was on the back of the trailer when it was struck. Although these trailers can carry up to 28 pallets, this one was only loaded with 20, so the catwalk down the middle of the trailer was clear allowing easy inspection of the load.
He was apparently inspecting the load to make sure that there was no product leakage. Although most of the load was oxygen/c02, there were small amounts of highly flammable gases being carried (I know this because they re-picked the identical load and I carried it up this morning).
I guess he was making sure that there was no leakage that was likely to cause a fire or explosion.

Thanks animal. I wasn’t close to him personally (I’m a day driver, he was a night man) but we’re a small team and it has affected us all knowing we’ve lost one. My mates on the job who work nights all said he was a really sound guy.

According to the local BBC news it seems like a combination of circumstances to produce the tragic end result, the BOC artic swerving for some reason, the news reporter saying it could have been an animal on the road, which led to it colliding with the parked Combine. The driver then pulls up as soon as possible to check for leaks and damage probably unaware he could have pulled into a safer stopping place just a little further on and then the third vehicle colliding just as the first driver was around the rear of his trailer. They seem to want answers to a number of questions but like most collisions it takes several steps which on there own wouldn’t be so bad but when added one after the other leads to a tragic outcome such as this and its hard to understand what went wrong. Very sad for all involved.
RIP to driver we lost.
I work with RDFl driver. It was his first week on the job working for RD. Experienced driver. Spoke to him on saturday. As of this morning he was still in a coma ( induced ). He is in critical condition with multiple fractures to his legs and whole body. Hope he pulls thru.
