A1 Laybys to be Closed in Yorkshire

Spotted this when I stopped in a layby on the A1 between Doncaster and the M62, saying that 9 of the laybys between Redhouse interchange and Darrington North and South bound are being closed permanently, they have started already and will be completed in 6 months, they are in the process of removing 2 at the northern end both sides.
That is going to lose quite a few overnight parking spaces in that area!

Its not good news for the lads who need to park up but they are bad to get in and out of in that area at certain times of the day,if you are round that area and need to have your hours off, come off the a1 and head for south elmsall, theres loads of free parking near superdrug, next and londis rdc,s ,theres a nearby pub that does great meals and and a cafe on stadium way nr superdrug for breakfasts,

And what about those who need to park up somewhere for a 45 minute break?
Blyth and Ferrybridge are nearly always full anytime of day.
Is Barnsdale Bar northbound still operational?
There are a couple of cafes on that stretch but will they tolerate parking up if you just need a 45 and the bog and don’t buy anything?

Good luck with that.

The one they closed before the S. Elmsall exit S/B was still used by a few even with soil in it and a higher kerb.

Tyre trails were in there for weeks. They had to put a sign up saying layby closed before the thick ■■■■■■■ realized. :unamused:

It’s a good thing IMO, them layby’s are way too small and can be a pain in the arse to get out of.

There is a cafe on the s/ bound side just after Darrington but to be honest I dònt like using it because you have to exit through the garage which is usually busy with wagons fuelling up plus it is a crap get out back onto A1 especially fully loaded

The one Southbound at Barnsdale Bar just after the brow of the hill is a safety hazard in my eyes you have HGV’S coming over the hill flat out and maybe in both lanes add a slow moving HGV. Coming out of the lay-by and it causes major problems.
Mind you I think the majority of RTC’S on this route are Northbound.

I like it how they say there are other places to take rest brakes such as the services at Blyth Ferrybridge etc. yes there is and instead of costing ■■■■ all they cost £20-£30. Its ok if your company pays your parking if you’re empty or not but how about them who only pay if you have a high value load on?
Me personally would never park in a lay by unless it’s well off the road such as Ram Jams and try and get parked up on an ind estate before 19:00 if possible. I much prefer to have my 9-11 hour off on an ind estate that may have a pub or a short walk to a town or village with pubs, takeaways and possibly a supermarket where I can stock up on food, drinks than being rocked every 30 seconds and the thought in the back of my mind that the next truck that passes may actually smash into me due to driver fatigue, heart attack or lack of concentration.

.

Its not just about whether your firm pays parking, it also if there is any room, one can assume that some off the guys who would have used those laybys will now have to use the services, even though they get packed now.

Parked in Chester MSA last night £24 :open_mouth: and only 1 shower :unamused: , it was 21.30 when I parked, and to be honest the place was rammed, managed to squeeze in though

Blimey never give that a thought, used to tip over there regular (next), normaly try for Redhouse if I’m in that neck off the woods, but I’ll store that in the back off my mind for when I’m to late

Bloody shame they put that ■■■ Shop there, was a useful bit off parking, or at least its a shame they put that arnco barrier there :unamused:

There’s been quite a few fatal accidents on that stretch between Redhouse and Ferrybridge ain’t there Seth. What about the one which was on the traffic cops show where there had been an accident on one side of the A1 and while the cameras were rolling the copper was called to a fatal on the other side where a truck had smashed into the back of another which was in standing traffic due to rubberneckers. The speed at the point of impact was 56mph the brakes hadn’t even been applied and there were bits of engine parts such as Camshaft and valves on strewn all over the shop :open_mouth: very shocking watching that episode.

Yea i watched it pal :open_mouth: if you hit that bit of the a1 between 7 and 9 its like wacky races ,You dont get tractors and trailers with no lights pottering round the m25 at peak times

About time the old bill pulled any muddy wheeler without a beacon :smiling_imp:

I can’t belive the amount of drivers that park in them really narrow lay bys on the A168/A19,one second of misjudgment from a passing truck and its game over.
You can park off the road at exelby services for £6 surely it’s worth it for a good nights sleep

I have no idea why but reading that made me chuckle

Why don’t they bring them upto standard… bigger, wider, longer run ways etc. Traffic, parking is only ever going to get worse and not better. It’s ok saying there are alternatives but as pointed out above at certain times of the day the are rammed and that’s before the caravan crew kick into action in the next few months.

I don’t understand why councils, governments never future proof things, it’s always the cheap option which will end up needing rectified at some point in the near future and cost even more.

Bunch of dolly bastarts if you ask me

I don’t mind going off route for a night stop but for just a 45 or quick pee stop these laybys are very handy. Can see why they are doing it as they can be dodgy to get out of but improving them would have been a better idea.

The amount of times iv gone in to ferrybridge and had to drive back out is unreal.
Always seems to be rammed through the day…
Whitwood is always busy and double yellow lines around all the estates.
I’m keeping my few little local parking spots secret because the area is losing way too much Hgv parking.

It was a right barsteward when they put overnight parking restrictions for ouwt over 7 and half tonne on the ins estate in Normanton. One main reason for that though was the dirty pricks leaving ■■■■ bottles and bags of ■■■■ around. Mind you the fella that runs the snack van near The pub did say that the old Bill did have somthing to do with it due to the amount of diesel thefts happening and they were getting sick and tired of having to patrol it :unamused:
About right that for the police.

I have heard that Redhouse has been double yellowed.has anybody been there recently?

Still plenty parking on there mate. IMO. Double yellows are fine as long as you ain’t parked up there during say the hours of 7am-6pm as long as you’re away before the traffic warden has illegally parked his/her car and started their shift then your ok. However if in a city like London then you’re knackered as the traffic wardens there seem to work 24/7.
