A week with the JTF express

Hello folks,

Its been a while since I’ve posted on the forum, mainly due to being busy with life changing jobs (again!) So I thought it maybe interesting doing a little diary of my ‘first week’ at Mcdowells.

My day starts at Keighley due to leave 04:00 heading down towards bristol, so arrive at 03:15 to put my stuff in the motor and away I go. Sadly not the case as I was needing my driver pack for the week and a fuel card otherwise I wouldn’t be getting far! As like anything it wasn’t in my lorry so, had to wait for the guy to come in bang on 4am to get my pack & defect book!

Eventually get my driver pack & fuel card, and go to fill up with ad blue in the yard to my luck with the pump not working so will call in at tibshelf to get the ad blue and fill up both the wagon and myself!

Get into tibshelf no problem, getting used to a few things again like the manual gearbox coming from my old Iveco I have kept going to press the D button a few times  Also dropping down to an 18 tonne rigid compared to the 26 tonner, takes some getting my head around with not having that extra length and the rear steer axle also!

I take 15 minutes in tibshelf answering the call of nature and getting through the que at McDonalds for breakfast as I didnt have anything before I left the house this morning. Not much of a tea or coffee drinker so coke was the obvious choice.

Once fed and watered both myself and the lorry time to hit the road for the long drive down to Bristol! Nothing too eventful whilst going down, although as I said above getting used to this truck from the Iveco is taking some doing, to the archers driver who probably thought I was blowing my horn at, I apologize  As I went for the screen wash it would have been where the horn is on the merc! Doh!

I pull in for half an hour on the way down, as I was dozing off a little bit behind the wheel being up since half two and only getting a few hours sleep probably didn’t help!

I eventually get to Bristol, running out of the factory shop warehouse here this week where I get told I’m loading for staple hill, roughly half an hour down the road from here so on three and a half hours drive time still enough time even if I get a little lost along the way :sunglasses: I get asked if im empty where I proceed to say ofcourse, until I take a walk to the back doors where I notice a seal around the handle, no paperwork in the cab this morning to tell me.otherwise, I break the seal to find half a load of pallets. The first time I forget to check inside the lorry to see if im loaded, was kicking myself for hours! Thankfully it was only 7 pallets I had to load on so could get the pallets tipped off when I get back as apparently they were returns to come back.anyway :sunglasses: so I was lucky there but in future ill always be double checking!

Shockingly enough I got to staple hill no problem fairly easy to get to and didn’t get lost! was told to look out for the shop turn right after its by tescos and back.into where there’s some black gates…just a shame they don’t tell.you about having to stop in the entrance to the car park of Tesco to open the bloody gate  I get tipped no problem, and have to say the woman who helped me unload the lorry was quite tidy :sunglasses: one perk of the job I suppose

I get back to the yard in good time for a bit of lunch and a chance to clean out inside the box van as sadly.as an agency driver cab hopping is the name.of the game and some drivers tend to have no respect for the equipment with what seems to be a good load of bird seed spilt all over the place, which when gets trodden on, flattened with pallets just looks and is pure disgusting! Sadly I do take pride in my.job and equipment whether im in it for a day or a week, it says a lot about your image turning up in a clean or dirty motor, its all about giving the right image out!

I get the returns tipped off, from both the shop and the yard  and loaded up for my drop in wales tomorrow. Into Cardigan, never heard of it before but hell I’ll go wherever, just keep the wheels rolling :sunglasses: I suppose you could say the old cliche ‘living the dream!’

Until tomorrow folks, stay safe out there

Cheers

Jonny :sunglasses:

Edit: I should add I’ll be updating daily so as not to forget my week! Plus a bit better insight writing from inside the tin box :sunglasses:

good little read that mate. Looking forward to hearing what else your week has in store!

Good to see your doing well and loving it.Fairplay to doing the right thing when feeling tried.I my self use the m5 to avonmouth and a pull in at the services is sum time a must.

Keep on trucking…

Nice one Jonny. Keep them coming!

Thanks for the replies folks, glad to see its not too boring! :grimacing:

So picking up where we left off, I had reloaded for wales the day before being told to park up in the yard and start for about 5, I was going to start about 04:00 but thankfully decided to spend the extra hour in bed as when I got up the gates were still locked and no key! So good job I didn’t get up that little bit earlier!

Untitled by jonnytruckfest1, on Flickr

The gadgy with the key to the gate eventually turns up as im doing my morning checks and I get on my way to the land of sheep lovers! To say the wind was strong was an understatement, although loaded I wasn’t all that heavy so was thrown around abit but nothing too bad :sunglasses: It was all going smoothly until i got a little lost  And well needless to say ended up giving a dirt hill a little nudge with the bumper thankfully no damage done just a muddy bumper! As i was taught get your boot into it first (or a big stick!) checking for anything that could damage the lorry.

Eventually get to the drop off point where i got to the front of the shop asking where i need to be, where i was met with ‘you need to go by such and such then turn up here where such and such is’…because judging my my accident i bloody live here :unamused: Thankfully the guy offered to go with me to direct me so very greatful for that as not many folk would go out their way like that to help! Sadly no pictures of how much of a ■■■■ this was to get to, but thankfully i won’t be going back there this week!

I get tipped off and reloaded with returns which I tend to like about this job as I hate running empty as an ex traffic operator working at reed boardsll running empty is practically criminal in my eyes  So this makes it better for not getting a reload, as opposed to my previous employers who ran empty as if they had £20 notes to throw out the window! I get on my way where i pull into a layby to get a couple pics of the wagon :sunglasses:

Got to admit I do love this part about my ‘job’ seeing different bits of the country sadly places my friends/family will never get to see!

https://flic.kr/p/pHQ5f3 by jonnytruckfest1, on Flickr

I get back to the yard in good time in just over 3 hours drive which in the weather and traffic I was up against was a good go. Back to the yard to be offloaded of the returns and for my reload for Paignton in the morning, such a great couple days. I love distance runs where it seems in this job where on the factory shop contract there’s a lot of driving which is more than adequate for me and still yet to go over a 10 hour drive :sunglasses:

https://flic.kr/p/pKVpsi by jonnytruckfest1, on Flickr

Once loaded I was going to go to the sandwich van just up the road from the warehouse but sadly was shut when I got their in the space of an hour must be nice to have an early finish  But from that I just get on my way to get as far as I can in my 13 hour shift as I want to keep my 15’s and reduces back to the end of the week.

So now here I am parked at Taunton services as I didn’t know where I could get parked down near the destination at hand, but managed to keep In my 13 and in my 10. So I’m happy enough, just sat with my soup and some of my seedy Warburtons loaf and some blackcurrant Ribena :sunglasses:

Start time of 04:15 tomorrow, give me an hour and a bit to get down to Paignton before 06:00 so they can get me tipped asap.

So again until tomorrow, will see you all out there maybe! Stay safe out there lads and lasses

Cheers

Jonny :sunglasses:

That merc a knock over? I may of passed you at some point, either yesterday or today.

Thanks for the replies folks, glad to see its not too boring! :grimacing:

Certainly not mate. Its refreshing to see someone with interest and enthusiasm for the job.

Its a straight 6 radar, nothing too difficult although it crunches everytime you put it into fifth so will be making note when I get back on Friday if the garage want to give it a look over.

As for the job I cant help but love it otherwise there’d be no point with the early starts, long hours and time away from everyone. I suppose you could say its in the blood. My last job before I came back to mcdowells I did nothing but complain, lack of hours, nights out, an easy/good job made difficult when the office staff wont pick up the phone and then complain to you when you don’t answer the phone and other things im sure I wouldn’t be allowed to mention on here.

Nevertheless, I’m on my third day and couldn’t be happier. Nice drive down Devon way, back towards Bristol for my next store delivery. Next week I could be on general haulage, or on the factory shop still etc a little variety in the job is also a good factor as it keeps your hand in the pot. The hours are decent, I’m out all week (fuel goes from £50 a week to £50 every 6 weeks!) and the kit although some have seen better days quite decent. Just waiting to be taken on full time and then eventually put through my Class 1. Which is where I want to be so certainly happy days!

Cheers

Jonny :sunglasses:

Pleased to see you enjoying it what you always wanted

I’m puzzled by how you are legally doing Keighley > Cardigan > Keighley > Taunton in a 10hr drive :open_mouth: . Even more puzzled by how you did Cardigan to Keighley in 3 hours. Given where Cardigan is and what the roads are like round there it would take at least 4.5 hours if not more.

Seen a bunch of those wagons around Lincoln, I’ll be on the lookout for you Johnny! I drove a simular wagon to yours expect mine was a knock over. That was a fun and interesting drive.

Left hand down!:

Dear oh dear, stick in at this reading lark. You’ll get the hang of it one day.

I eventually get to Bristol, running out of the factory shop warehouse here this week

Cheers for the replies folks, I wish I could say I was in high spirits today but sadly not. Not a day for pictures well pictures I can publish online for now.

I’ll point out for LHD, I’ve been working out of Bristol this week, I set off from Keighley first thing Monday morning, with pallets unknown to ones self   To go to the factory shop depot in Bristol. From where I get given my jobs, next week it looks like I’m back here working from Bristol!

Anyway, I set off from Taunton this morning around 04:45 after my shower, morning checks, brew & breakfast heading towards Paignton for what I was told a 6am booking well I get there ahead of schedule by about 15 minutes to be told I was facing the wrong way ‘no problem, ill just get turned around up the road’ and that the manager wont be in for another 20 minutes. So with this I get turned around, get my taillift down and in position for tipping.

Eventually I get tipped off no fuss, with a good bit of banter with the girls as they were stripping the pallets down as I fetched them in, all seemed a little disorganized but got there eventually. Get reloaded with empties back for Bristol a nice drive back as I didn’t put a break in when I was there I had just over an hours drive at that point so straight on with it back to base for my reload.

Untitled by jonnytruckfest1, on Flickr

I get back in the depot for around half 10, with a total of just shy of 4 hours total for the roundish trip which I thought was quite good considering! I get tipped and reloaded for Cainscross, Stroud. Full load of 16 pallets as well as the clothes which we have down as the ‘hanging’ stock. Now this is where it starts to go wrong well not at this point ad the journey down was quite smooth, I got lost a bit going into Stroud taking the wrong exit off a roundabout making it a little tricky to get turned around but I manage it eventually.

Now I can’t say too much about what happened but to put it in perspective, I got to the destination okay and I got backed in, in the process my back end came into contact with the metal cladding above the loading bay as the instructions given wernt Imo that clear! Minimal damage was done to the building as I was lucky to be going at crawling speed. But nevertheless I still hit something and the confidence knock has slightly arrised but as ill say to any newbie like myself bumps and scrapes happen, all you can do is try to be more aware of surroundings and think more about something before you do it! And as a driver told me, ■■■■ happens. Just got to have it down as experience and learn from it.

https://flic.kr/p/pLGxaH by jonnytruckfest1, on Flickr

At a distance you’ll be able to see slightly the bent metal on the building. Surprisingly no damage whatsoever to the truck!

Moving aside from that, I get back to Bristol in good time ready to be tipped and reloaded back for Cardigan in the morning. Happily for me as I know fresh from memory how to get in, sadly its a pain to get into  But thus is my day ended, 14 hours fairly straight forwardish.

Now I know most will have a dig about said accident, just remember no one will be punishing me anymore than I am myself. As well as the annoyed factor. As someone once said tomorrow is another day and hopefully a lot better than today!

Cheers

Jonny :sunglasses:

Johnny - any driver that says they have never bent either, part of their truck, or part of another object, is a liar. It does happen, you know it, so does your TM, beat yourself up about it and learn for next time. Jobs a good 'un and crack on!

Exactly, It happens, deal with it, move on and take it as a lesson.
Tomorrow is another day.

One of the first times I drove an attic after passing I made a huge mess of it. Reveresed onto loading bay between the guide no problem. I was very chuffed because I Was terrified about it as it was my first reverse solo. Got tipped, went to go get another load for the same place. Same bay again said lads at warehouse, and what a ■■■■■■■ mess I made of it.smahed all the wheel surround up. After 20 mins I gave up and had to ask someone to do it for me. I was getting so ■■■■■■ off with myself I made it worse and worse instead of fully pulling away have a minute to calm down and go again. As someone said, show me someone who hasn’t damaged anything as a driver and I will show you a liar. All the best , I’m enjoying the diary!

@JTF, looking at the pic of the delivery point I’ve got a feeling you are not the first, and won’t be the last, to have tapped the cladding at that place  All delivery spots that have a down slope are a pain in the ■■■, especially with a big rigid van and if there is no-one to watch you onto the bay it can be really difficult to gauge the right stopping point as the top of your van body will be closer to the top of bay because of the slope and no flat level before it, it might only be a couple of inches but that couple inches means a tap on the cladding. As long as this hasn’t put your job in jeopardy just take it as a lesson learned, don’t beat yourself up over it just move on, you have only done what every other driver has done at some point in their driving career.

Keep on Trucking mate :sunglasses:

OK, missed that bit in your post. Did you turn right at the roundabout to go along the bypass to Bingley? I think I saw you on Monday morning as I come along there from Settle to the M62 between 4 and 4.30 and remember seeing a McDowell’s rigid just coming onto the rbt as I went across.

When you get to Cardigan, have a look at where the Co-Op is… there’s a small left turn directional sign on the front of a row of old terraced houses - takes you to the harbour. Then imagine taking a full size artic down there, and getting it back out of town after you’ve tipped - what a nightmare!!!

Don’t feel bad Johnny. This is what I did to a Stobarts not long after passing.
