I was on zero hours in 1993 and throughout the entirety of the 13 years Labour was in power as well. My wife started her zero hour job 19 years ago.
Labour did nothing about it and I’m glad they didn’t.
Whilst we’re here lets visit the bedroom tax although its not actually a tax at all but a reduction in housing benefit you get in public sector housing if you have spare bedrooms… That was started by Labour in 2008. The tories merely addressed an injustice against those in private rented accommodation on benefits.

jesus wept, they’ve got you hook line and sinker. The expense of a few benefits cheats (most people claiming aren’t scroungers) is tiny compared to the tax loopholes that the Tories have deliberately put in place over the decades to look after their own. Not to mention the privatisations that were done to line the pockets of Tories. Just look at Royal Mail, profitable yet sold off for a pittance with the pension liability tab picked up by tax payers and surprise surprise George Osbornes best man gets hedge fund gets the option to purchase in bulk. Osborne tells us they were given this option as they were committed to holding the equity. A few months later they sell their shares after doubling their money. If you think the Tories are there to look after you all I do is

They’re always advertising. Successful applicant will get to drive either an elderly Atego or (if it’s roadworthy), an M reg Merc 1817.

I don’t, but out of the two there’s more chance of them taxing the rich more.

I’d do that job, if it’s clearing out Cameron’s junk to move somewhere nearer to a jobcentre…

Probably true. Nothing to pick and choose between any of them really, they’re all ■■■■■■ that went into politics straight from Uni. I wish there were more Dennis Skinners and Kate Hoeys. As much as I hate Milliband he might do some good if he bans zero hour contracts it’s a start to creating a fairer society. What we really need is a business tax on agency staff to make the use of them purely for emergency cover, and not a means of employers getting around employment laws and weakening union representation.
if Miliband would just say “we will take back the billions that the last labour government gifted the wealthiest men in the country and use it to help working people” I would vote labour.
All the campaigns (with the exception of UKIP) are very negative. Labour are making fabulous promises without identifying how they will fund them.
Re zero hours, some people WANT to work on a zero hours contract eg those on the agency etc.
Let’s not forget also that a hell of a lot of PFI deals in the NHS totalling hundreds of billions of pounds were started by New Labour! So a bit rich to blame the Tories.
I haven’t made my mind up but I’ll probably vote UKIP. To lump them in with the BNP or EDL etc is stupid - BNP aren’t a euro sceptic party whereas that is the focus of UKIP. I’d like our own government to be able to decide what to do with foreign criminals, not have them appeal to Strasbourg. I’d like us to stop paying into the EU gravy train, even though we get a rebate.
Labour doesn’t want us to be able to do any of this for some reason, The Tories are promising a referendum but their heart isn’t in it.
We should keep our nuclear arsenal and submarines, but we need to boost our conventional forces; I can’t fathom why the Tories have diverted cash to foreign aid when it could have been used for this.
I’m All for paying benefits in vouchers to prevent it being spent on ■■■■ and booze and then kids go hungry.
The Greens are a bit of a joke as are the LibDums.
Labour are ■■■■■■■■ themselves up North that the working mans vote will go to Farage. They do face annihilation in Scotland to the SNP
One old joke you could do worse than remembering:
“How can you tell a politician is lying?”
“His lips are moving!”

What have benefits cheats got to do with anything? I’ve not mentioned a thing about benefits cheats. The tax loopholes were actually put in place by Labour in the main but not closed by the Tories.
Lets look at the Royal Mail. The largest investors were funds. Those funds were pension funds that invest the money to provide returns for millions of ordinary people who have either a private pension or a work pension through them. So although the fund managers benefitted so did millions of ordinary working people.

I DO NOT WANT ZERO HOURS BANNING and neither does my wife. Zero hours allows both of us to choose when we want to work. Without zero hours I would no longer be able to do my hobby as it requires Wednesdays off and random Fridays and Mondays depending on events. Same story with my wife. In fact when it comes to the wife, because one of our kids is autistic she would actually have to give up working. Banning zero hours would also for a lot of university students mean they can’t get jobs to earn money to live whilst they study either. Lots of people actually like and benefit from zero hours and like your beloved benefits cheats you see no problem with, the number of people in this country on zero hours are just a fraction of the total workforce and those who are on them who said they didn’t want to be are just a fraction of 1% of the total workforce. So if that kind of percentage isn’t an issue when it comes to benefits cheats why is it for zero hours?
And in regards to agencies, all your stupid idea would do is ensure more people are on the dole or lots of people end up getting employed for a week then fired and then have to look for other work so they’d spend more time out of work than they do working for agencies. The only other option is for them to set up self employed which means they then lose all rights as an employee and get all the risks of a small business such as not getting paid for weeks if at all. If you think that it will mean more people getting permanent jobs then you’re a blithering idiot. At best it’ll be a small percentage get seasonal work so they’ll have a job from April to September then they’ll be on the dole until November and back on the dole again in December.

Of course more people would get permanent jobs. That’s how it always used to be. Agencies only really sprung up in the last 20 years or so as a means for fat cats to get around employment laws and to break Union strength. Divide and rule, divide and conquer. In you they’ve got the perfect Tory voter; a mug who’s working class that’s been taken in by their lies. The bottom line that you should never forget is that the Tories are the party of the upper class, always have been always will be. They don’t give a ■■■■ about people like you.
human cannonball:
if Miliband would just say “we will take back the billions that the last labour government gifted the wealthiest men in the country and use it to help working people” I would vote labour.
Yeh. That’s the sort of thing I’ve always thought…
I’ve yet to vote Labour however. The road to hell is paved with good intentions and all that.
All it would take is one worker-friendly pledge that’s actually possible to implement without it being blocked right after an election… But no.
“Closing tax loopholes” is a pledge that should get made AFTER you’ve got in, and then you’ve started the clock on when to get it done by - the next election.
Just raise taxes for the rich, and make them inescapable by taxing those moving abroad with the introduction of “exit taxes” popular in other small countries around the world. It ain’t rocket science FFS.
