A sudden end to my driving days

About 3 yearsago I was on a night out in the midlands, sat up in bed on the net, chatting on phone, not looking at ■■■■ no deffinetly not, just a normal night.About midnight awoke feeling really sick, thought rough guts, got up and walked about and felt loads better.Went back to bed only to wake again about 2am much, much worse,I have never felt so ill.By the time I was sat up on bunk I could not move then the right side of my body just collapsed.By the time I raised an ambulance I could hardly speak and by the time it arrived I had gone totally blind.and crippled.

Diagnosis? massive Stroke
Cause? gas cooker accidently left on poisoning me,when I got out the first time I was getting away from the gas so felt better.

that’s really bad,
how are you coping?

Spent about a year in a wheelchair, one day I woke up and could see very badly at first, now actually better than before go figure. Now walking though still have weekness in right side, doubt this will ever improve.I have cpc and dgsa qualifications,so like most people that have suffered brain injury I took a job as a TM.

Seriosly be carefull with these gas stoves, nearly killed me,and certainly messed me up.

Think I’ll leave mine in the chassis locker from now on. Sorry to hear about your misfortune and glad you’re in the mend.

Glad to see you were very fortunate to survive, my mates dad had an incident with a gas bottle in the cab, but unfortunately he did not survive, he was found dead the next morning!
And that is one reason why I don’t carry gas in my truck, and I don’t have the gas connected in my caravan, ever!

Sorry to hear this. How is the hunt for work going?

I am working as a Transport Manager I also do DGSA work. When I was going for interviews it was really quite amusing,I can be a bit wobbley, and firms especially big firms could not get me out quick enough, they just don’t want the hassle.

Sorry to hear about your woes. Glad you are on the mend and are gainfully employed.

Your accident is a stark reminder to us all.

Hiya A sad story nw explorer…i like to hear your trying your hardest to beat the problem, and doing
well at it by the sound of things. well done mate.
i had a banger racing pal who lost his life with the gas burning the oxygen in his cab while he had a kip.
Don (his name) had a oldish Ford with plenty of drafts and holes around the cab, he was then given a new
Merc(air tight). he parked up one night lit his stove to boil some water. while he rested his eyes the gas
took over. well thats enough said , you managed to get help.keep at it, plus stay on TN and give us some
up dates on how your doing.
good luck mate John

These gas accidents are more common than you’d think.I simpley knocked the gas on,the stove was one of those flat types, moving about the cab, easy done.

I sailed on yachts a while ago,the safe procedure was to always put the cooker out at the main gas valve fitted to the canister then turn off at the cooker.Glad that you are on the mend.Have you considered building your experience into a DCPC module .

That is actually a very scary story I certainly have learnt a lesson from this thread along with others, all the best.

Yeah, gotta be super careful with the gas stoves. My night heater has packed up at the mo so I have a cheeky ten minute blast on the stove before I get out of bed if its really brass monkey but I’m careful not to leave it on longer than about ten mins without ventilation.

Thanks for posting NW explorer. It’s a sobering tale and one which if I’m honest would never have crossed my mind. Great news that you’re on the mend and also great (with your TM comment) that you’ve kept your sense of humour!

I have a stove but always put it back in its plastic case when I’ve finished and it’s cooled down as putting it in the case triggers a release which disengages the gas bottle, but I’ll be double checking in future just in case.

I wish you all the best and a speedy recovery.

Like your humour

Thats a very sobering story NW explorer, thanks for sharing it with us, maybe it will prevent someone else suffering the same.

I’m even more pleased that my new truck came with a fitted Microwave after reading your post. and I think that I would now by a microwave for any truck in the future that I get if it doesnt have one fitted.

Always leave your window open, either cooking, or with the night heater on. This simple measure could save your bacon.

Thanks for all your kind comments.
I must say that my company helped by bringing my wife down to Solihull and putting her and my sister up in a hotel while I was there,I was really ill, near death expierience the lot,no tunnel of light for me,but oddly a naked black man sat on the end of my bed, perhaps more of a fantasy.they also paid me my full basic for I think 6 months so I didn’t have the imediate worry. The owner has written to me several times to enquire after me.

The company? MARITIME as I have said in other posts the owner J Williams decent bloke

A few drivers have died with carbon monoxide poisoning in their cabs.
Gas cookers are very dangerous, you should leave both windows open while using them.

Well fair play to Maritime in this case then.

I have no experience of Maritime whatsoever and as such am not qualified to speculate about the Co, but from what I’ve read on TN regarding them the concensus seems to be a fantastic owner let down by poor underlings.

Just about sums up my expierience of the company
