A step too far for me - "I need your keys, drive"

Nightline…exactly that…he who must be obeyed and all that…its much easier to agree, than to argue the toss…for sure as hell is hell…you aint gonna win…you may think you have when they tell you to leave their premises…and then you have to phone the boss as to why you cant tip…much easier to let it go over your head…the same arguement is drivers unloading themselves at Aldi/Lidl etc…when one does it…its expected…and whats gonna happen when they all start doing it…i dont agree with all H&S…but abide by what ever the rules are…and i have been a rebel…so been there and done it…and can still rear up when it gets stupid…at the end of the day…i just get on with it…makes the job easier…and gets me out quicker.

The other night my load was ready, along with 2 others, and all our keys were returned to the clerks desk. Normally we’d pick them up and go. But we had to wait for our ■■■■■■ to collect our keys, and he was more than 5 minutes. Then he walked us all back to our cabs. The first one took his keys, pulled off the bay, and all procedures were followed etc, then the second one, then me as I was parked furthest from the office. I wasn’t allowed to carry on walking when the other two drivers were going through the motions, I had to wait for the ■■■■■■ to ■■■■■■ me. In all, it cost me an extra 15 minutes than normal. The load was already 30 minutes late. I’m not sure how you define ‘easier’ and ‘quicker’, because this malarky was neither. The escorts are moaning like hell about these rules as it’s a lot of extra work for them, and drivers are moaning about handing keys over to shut the back doors (but not doing anything about it).

I wonder how a tilt would work now in the uk with all this h/s now
God i have some memories the hairs stand up on the back of my neck just thinking about it
But is was a great experience, now on the continent they are helped and not left alone till job is done, god i could write a book on it, it would not be good reading for h/s

what a crock of $$** all this over zealous H&S pees me off no end ,more on their line to make sure that driver are treated at a minimum in a civil way while on their premises and not wound up leaving ,have proper facilities etc ,but oh no they go into nitty gritty bull s&&& just to justify their existence ah sure I could go on and on but wont do me blood pressure any good

I understand some aspect of H&S, due to some drivers being stupid (putting it mildly) and doing stupid things, but, going by some of the stories posted, it has got to a point of absolute insanity at some places.
Escorted across the yard !
Suzie locks whilst parked in the waiting area !
Handing keys in even though you’re in a waiting area and the truck is immobilized !
:unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:
I could go on !!

Has anybody on here ever done market deliveries ? Smithfields in London to name one . You’d be there all week if you had to put up with these stupid rules.
Handing keys in ? Hi-Vis ? Not being allowed in the trailer ?
The forkies there think that they are all reincarnations of Aerton Senna ffs and this is during the night!!

Like it or not H&S is a major growth industry, I personally feel secure in the knowledge that folks have done all the necessary courses to ensure my safety and have only my best interests at heart.

Removed from site permanently? As in going through the motions of removing you until you drop dead? . Like ground hog day. What a punishment.

Just run…

The sign over then claim you didn’t see it.

They should have a man standing around dressed like a daffodil pointing the sign out to drivers.

That’s just dangerous like that.

That also sounds a bit dangerous… surely you need 4 men stood back to back in a square to ensure 360 degree visibility. :grimacing:

I spent 30 minutes waiting for a banksman an at an Amazon depot so I could get on the bay. He finally showed up and I ended up cracking a a light cluster getting onto the bay.
Ye I’m at fault… But he kept waving me back and if I didn’t have a banksman I would of got out to check if the rear suspension needed adjusting…
Also he forgot to take one of the wheel chocks off before telling me I can go… Luckily I noticed.

Go on, name and shame…
What a crock, this last year of my working life is not going to go fast enough when you have to deal with places like this. It just seems to get worse everywhere you go… common sense has gone to hell in a handcart.

You said what Ive been saying for a while now. Im in my last year of the wonderful world of work. BS has become a growth industry it seems. I look at the younger collegues, and wonder just what and how the industry will be when they reach my age. The whole thing has become a rat race, which is why I decided to jump ship. I jacked in the sometimes 15 hour night shifts, and now Im driving a road sweeper!, still not without its vagaries, but a whole lot better way of finishing off my working life.

I think I posted this one before, but I used to work for a waste paper company and we collected out of Kirkham Prison.
The ■■■■ on the gate went through all the questions, I had to provide photo ID too as well as having all my belongings checked.

When he got to the phone question, I said it was a fixed phone and I couldn’t turn it off. He was adamant it would turn off or come out so he stomped me back to the cab. He looked every where and asked where is it then? I pointed to the phone buttons on the steering wheel and said you might need some help getting that out.

I like my job sometimes

It’s actually a criminal offence to take a mobile phone into a prison. That ‘■■■■’ was trying to help you.

Agreed. I picked up some building material from Kirkham HMP workshps about 6 months ago and the security geezer explained that if I was to be caught with a mobile phone in the prison, it was a prosecutable offence.

Sounds like it might be an abattoir to me…

Nah you don’t get any of that nonsense in abattoirs. I’ve never even been asked to put a hiviz on.

Most animals are colourblind, apart from Bulls who only see red apparently [emoji23]

I am thinking about this, if everyone nips into B&M and buys a 3 pack of padlocks and puts the keys on the lorry keys, tell the pleb with the keys you need them for the trailer doors. Make sure you either remove the locks or put them on, fill in a duplicate book and ask him to date and sign the book as a witness that you have complied with 2016 NATO anti terrorism controls! Better still give him a copy of his signature.

A suzie lock while you’re in the waiting area Ezy ■■? Are they scared you might escape or something ■■?
I’m sorry but the powers that be have gone to the extremes of complete and utter stupidity in the UK !!!
I’m all for safety, but this has to be a wind up surely ! Not you Ezy, but the place where you are .

It’s not a wind up mate. They’re deadly serious. I’m just waiting for the day we have to put suzie locks on AND wait outside the cab when we’re paked up across the yard.

The micro management of drivers is insane. Whilst I was waiting for the 4 hours, I saw many breaches of H&S that far surpassed anything they’re trying to control for. For example, a driver pulled forward literally about 2 or 3 ft from the bay so he could close his shutter door on the trailer. He duly gave his keys over, but left his cab door wide open. If his handbrake had failed, or had he failed to apply it, or had anybody released it, he would have had zero chance of escape once he realised his lorry was rolling backward. But it’s ok, because he handed his keys to the ■■■■■■. See what I mean? To safeguard against every possible incident is nigh on impossible. So this particular rule (giving keys to ■■■■■■ when going to shut back doors) needs challenging. Once every now and then, things go too far, and this is an instance in which things have gone too far.

This sounds totally OTT and ridiculous  Theres no way i’d hand my keys to anyone, keys are your own personal property and belong with the driver who’s responsible for the truck. Its like demanding the keys to their yard and any forklifts on site.
Companies and drivers sticking together on this would soon put a spanner in their pathetic H&S works…but… as ever, that would never happen…

Exactly - ask for the keys of all other vechiles in the yard to be given to your ■■■■■■ before you go back to your truck . Theres a risk you may be run down while crossing the yard .lol

So to really ■■■■ it up , if you are an o/d do away with the keys and get the fingerprint recognition plates fitted ( like iPhone) …they would be totally screwed and not no what to do!
Can you tell it’s a boring wet bank holiday…
