A Drivers Life

mac12:
Do you not think he may be right, I have seen jobs now saying you will work Monday to Saturday and just have 45 hours off that means being away for up to 123 hours per week now I know you are all on £15 per hour so do ok but what about drivers on £8 or less per hour. If you have 11 hours of every night 5 nights per week for £20 a night that’s 55p per hour now I know you are not working but you are also not free to do as you please you cannot even go to the toilet would that be allowed in jail. Now back to working hours there would be 68 at £8 that would be £544 if paid for breaks, is that enough to give your life up for. Would your boss live in a tin box with no toilets, washing facilities or food if not why should you.

mine does every week, infact he does more than I do :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

When does he get time to plan your work do wages and all the other office work

I love my job thank you. I only night out twice a week but I find it’s nice to be out and let the Mrs have a good nights kip due to my loud snoring (hay fever blocking my nose)

the meaning of tramp

verb
[no object, with adverbial of direction]
walk heavily or noisily:he tramped about the room

walk over a long distance wearily or reluctantly:he had tramped all over the city

[with object] tread or stamp on:one of the few wines still tramped by foot

noun

1a person who travels from place to place on foot in search of work or as a vagrant or beggar.

2 [in singular] the sound of heavy steps:the tramp of marching feet

3 [in singular] a long walk, typically a tiring one:she was freshly returned from a tramp round Norwich

4 [usually as modifier] a cargo vessel that carries goods between many different ports rather than sailing a fixed route:a tramp steamer

5 informal, chiefly North American a promiscuous woman.

6a metal plate protecting the sole of a boot used for digging.

the top of the blade of a spade.

now the highlighted one is the only one that comes near to what we do!!!

I am certainly not a vagrant or a beggar infact I get paid rather well for what I do and I wouldn’t change it for the world to be honest.

I know its not ever ones cup of tea, and there are guys doing it because there is nothing else around, but in my eyes you need a certain mind set to do it and enjoy it.

oh and I have a great home life my partner doesn’t mind me being away, in some respect getting home at the weekend gives us a more intense time together(if you know what I mean) :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses: :sunglasses:

We sleep in a tin box with pathetic night heaters for the winter and no air con pods on the cab roof to keep cool at night for a poxy £20 per night. :imp:
Would an airlinw pilot or train driver sleep in his cockpit.

What a load of ■■■■■■■ dog ■■■■.

some of us get more then £20. Some of us have good night heaters and pods.

And no train driver and pilot wouldnt. But guess what? That’s not in there job description. Ours is. Surely u knew what u was signing up for. Your bunk isnt there for a pretty feature.

You all knew the job you were setting out for for ■■■■■ sake. Jesus. Wish all u knockers would ■■■■ off from the job and let the lads in who want to do it.

I’m not sure why we give these argumentative ■■■■■■■ the time of day on here, they seem the type that would start a fight in an empty room [it being empty cos all there mates ■■■■■■ off years ago] we “trampers” if that’s what I am do what we do for many reasons and shouldn’t be judged on that…live and let live

nightline:
A driver’s life

Been here before nothing ever changes, lets look at the night guys who stay out for the week and sleep in the cab all week, tramping they call it, what I call it is cheap labour, please call it what it is cheap labour is what it is. Now people who do this kind of work don’t do it for the 20 pound a night out money (or do they) god help them if they do and on top of that some company’s wont pay for parking.

People who do this either don’t like there kids or don’t like there wife or don’t like there parents or don’t like them selfs, whoever they live with maybe they hate them self’s. Lets get real here they must be working for 3.50 a hour or less, what a very very sad life they live missing out on so much.

For less than 3.50 give me the knife. Tell it how it is.

If you do it in Europe that’s a big adventure and you get something out of it, it’s called experience but to do it in your own country for 20 pounds a night it’s a sad state of affair’s for the people who do it five nights a week or four no wonder the job is [zb] up when you have people doing this for peanuts.

Some people live a very very sad life to make a small living, just telling it how it is when some one trys to do this every one seems not to have an opinion to tell the truth or get very defensive

The Taliban would be so proud of you keep up the good work they probably work less and earn more that you. Ps I know they do.

And before you go on about it’s a job, if the people who employ you can’t afford to pay a living wage then they should not be in business.
And I am a truck driver, I just don’t go along with all the sweetness that s on here please tell it how it is.

It’s a [zb] of a job with no life and no backup from you own kind, so you will always be working in this business for min wage long hours and little pay welcome to the glorified truckers net, its a [zb] job.

I haven’t read all this post as I got bored after you repeated yourself in paragraph 2. All I’ll say is if I do a 14/15 hr day I don’t want to be driving 30 mins home, eat, wash, make bag for tomorrow, then go to bed at 7pm to be up at 1 to go to work at 0130 to start at 0200. I’d much rather pull up at a truck stop / services eat, wash, talk to the mrs and kids for half an hour then off to sleep for 7 hrs. I get paid parking so get a free meal (or heavily Discounted) a decent nights kip. I save at least £5 by not travelling to and from work and I get £20 night out so with the meal , fuel saving and night out money I’d say I’m £30 better off per night. I also get more sleep so feel a lot better the next day. If I do 10 to 13 hrs I would rather go home.

I think this post must be a ‘wind-up’

But anyway, here’s how things are from my perspective …

I couldn’t see myself doing or wanting to do any other work. Compared to an unskilled factory job in my area I earn about 3 times more. Stuck inside a mundane building all day or being down in The Med driving most of the week has no comparison to me. I’ve made some good friends over the years and earned a good living from it. I’ve got a nice house, a nice family and have under a year to go on my mortgage and I’m still in my 40’s.

I prefer nights out because you get longer runs.the day men at our place get all that pallet force crap…no thank you.
I also get my own truck, which nobody else uses.

Makes me laugh that there are folk on here complaining about the job THEY APPLIED FOR! Did these people go to the interview with a blindfold on and ear plugs in their lug holes■■? :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: you all know what you were getting yourselfs in for when you started out and decided to do the tramping life so stop whingeing about it and If you don’t like it then ■■■■ off to another trade or job you think you will like and let someone else who wants to tramp have your job! :smiling_imp:

I think people get into hgving, and then realize it`s not quite as they imagined.they then end up hating their life(which they did before taking the test)…and so, are in exactly the same situation as they were before.
minus 3 grand.
the only way they can seek comfort,is by knocking the ones that seem to be making a success of it.

either that…or their mrs won`t let em do nights out :grimacing:

not 5 star but what is wrong with being treated like a human. Some drivers are treated worse than slaves even if it is the job you applied for you should not have to work maybe double the normal working week for the average wage and then be expexted to live in a tin box to guard someone else’s load.

But you knew the hours involved, the pay and that you would be living in a “Tinbox” so why bother going for the job or this career path so why bother??

I love this kind of bull ■■■■ talk. Average wage do you even know what the average unskilled worker earns■■? About £220-£250 a week, I don’t know any people driving Class 1 taking home less than £400 per week, I also don’t know many people that actually do the hours they are contracted for, many do a lot of unpaid overtime. Finally who said you have to ‘guard’ the load? I couldn’t give a monkeys if the fuel/load gets knicked as long as they don’t wake me up while there at it. I stop in services when empty because it suits me as I can shower/■■■■/eat without having to do it with wet wipes/carrier bag/camping stove and my employer pays for my parking including the meal voucher
