Think the kid has a bit more nous, than his dad.
I think at the point the cyclists were coming through the obstruction was the car side first (ie it couldn’t have got to where it did without moving out to get around the parked cars in the right). Therefore in my mind the cyclists were in the gap first so had priority. If they were a car there would have been no physical way the oncoming vehicle could’ve got through. That says it all for me.
It’s just another situation where no common sense is present though.
Any decent driver would have stopped regardless of who is right and wrong, its a child on a push bike who has little road sense so the car should have allowed for this, I believe the child actually had the right of way regardless.
Under new rules cyclists have priority regardless.
What was sad about that video is it appears the child had more common sense than his father. He saw what was going to happen and quite rightly asked if he should pull over but in true headcam wearing cyclist fashion his father went “sod common sense, I’m in the right” and told him to continue regardless of the fact that if the child had had a nervous wobble or the car been just a bit more to it’s right they could have collided. But that’d be OK because daddy would have had it all on camera…
Her is a very good analysis of the situation in my opinion anyway.
Yes,Ashley is never far off the mark.
Which is more than can be said of his footballing days ![]()

Sums up the attitude of the average cyclist unfortunately, it’s why so many get killed, they forget they will be the ones that get hurt the most
Of course now they have the law on their side so we have to be super careful.
Shame the father is teaching this attitude to his kid it’s not what i would do… But then i want my kids to live another day
Looks like a non event to me. The child could have stopped, the car could have stopped. Neither did and nothing happened. When my children were five I took them out on rural back roads using a tag a long. That is a single wheel contraption with pedals that securely attaches to the lead bike.
Regardless of rights or wrongs, it’s unforgivably stupid to tell a 5 year old to do what he did.

All part of the reclaim the streets agenda.
The driver was stupid for falling into the obvious politically motivated trap.
I agree that the car driver should have stopped or at the very least slowed right down, however the father’s attitude is unforgivable, who in their right mind puts their 5 year old child at risk just because he believes he has the right of way.
There’s only one person showing common sense in this story and it’s the 5 year old child.

I agree with Ashley Neal…
Nowadays it seems drivers are of the mindset that they are going to barge through, whether it be a child on a bicycle or a large vehicle, I’ve had numerous drivers not give way when I’m in a narrow part of the road and then have to reverse or simply drive on the pavement!!

He’s spot on with what he says.
The child needs to be taken into care, he’s not getting any from the allegedly responsible adult.
The father should be charged, for recklessly endangering the child.
Star down under.:

I agree, he did not give good advice but if you want that for the father what about the car driver that caused the whole situation?
Another opinion…

Can’t really disagree with what he says either

Well no, especially as the high way code/law says, but if you have any brains you will give way to if your more likely to be hurt.
And that is the problem with the politically correct highway code now.
The father clearly is of the view that I HAVE RIGHT OF WAY SO I AM RIGHT
Sure he may not be wrong.
But imagine a truck that has lost its brakes and is flashy everyone to move out of the way at a set of traffic lights. “Well the lights are red so he must stop as I have right of way.” ![]()
Regardless of what the law says common sense should play a factor.
Personally, if I had a 5 year old kid I would not allow him to cycle on the road. Because even if the highway code is on your side. There are plenty of drivers who ignore it. Heck, even on my Motorbike I often have close calls and feel vulnerable despite being in the right.
I mean how many times have you guys given way while driving a truck despite knowing you have right of way because some idiot is travelling far too fast? I do it plenty of times because I want to avoid any potential incidents. Driving a truck you have to drive with other road users in mind and with their safety in mind regardless of if they are driving correctly or not. That has to be even more true when your teaching your kid to ride a bike.
