A 616 What speed do you do

On the A616 from Flouch roundabout past Stocksbridge to the M1 South what speed do you do.

As you all know the route is covered by SPECS cameras, now I have a roadangel in the cab which is more accurate than the speedo so if im doing 40 on the angel the clock reads about 43 and I know SPECS take an average speed so I always stick to 40, so why do I see other drivers flying by at 45-50ish and dont seem to worry about the cameras. Is there something I dont know like these cameras dont work or am I just more carefull than most.

You just stick to the posted speed limit, no-one will pay you wages if you lose your licence.
If other drivers want to risk it, then thats their problem, not yours or ours.

Been along there twice today and will go twice tomorrow and will keep to the limit . I wonder about the speeders and how they get away with it, but it’s just not worth the risk. What would you gain by it and what could you lose.

40 on the dot

went through a small village between Bridgend and Cardiff near the Royal Mint and there was a pair of these cameras on the High St :open_mouth:

40!

If it runs slightly over down hill, brake it down to 35 before next camera.
Often passed by other LGV’s who sometimes brake for the cameras. My guess is many are still unaware of how SPECS work.

Totaly agree with the above!!

I was working out of Hazlehead for a while and used to end up on that route and it amazed me how many drivers ‘flew’ past. :open_mouth:

Having said that, I was also curious how the system works where there is a combination of 40 & 50 mph limits i.e. dual carriageway

Stick to the limit.

These cameras work 24 hours a day and there are also a lot of Police patrols in the area. South Yorkshire Police have had a big crackdown on this stretch of road due to the number of fatal accidents.

They measure the average speed over a set distance between two cameras, both of which are placed in the same speed limit zone.

Killsville is right. There have been some terrible accidents at Stocksbridge.
I’m no fan of cameras but they had to do something along that stretch.

Stick to the limit, the cameras do work 24/7. Most of those speeding along there will soon get a Birthday card from the boys in blue.

50 :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

( but thats the limit for my van   )

There are several different speed limits on that road - be careful not to miss one of the signs. As well as SPECS cameras there are also a few Gatso’s.

Even though there are a lot of cameras on there now, it is still a horrible stretch of road. The cameras do seem to be having an effect though - i haven’t heard of any fatal accidents for a while.

OK, I don’t think I explained myself very well with my last post (40 & 50 mph).

As you pass by Stocksbridge there is a stretch of dual carrigeway that is 700 metres long and then there is a bit more further along (heading east, towards M1).

There are SPECS cameras coveing these areas and my question is how can the SPECS accurately calculate if you were speeding when there are two different limits between the cameras?

<<<—700 metres @ 50mph—>>> | <<<—3kms @ 40mph—>>>

To my mind, the cameras have to be sited on a stretch of road where the speed limit is constant. Also there should be no turns, otherwise regular users would soon work out that you can speed as much as you want to your turn off; the second camera is not going to read your VRN.

(700 50) + (300040) / 3700  41.89mph

but I have no idea if the cameras can work that out or even work like that

Like you I thought they would need a constant speed limit to work :exclamation:

…err, that’s the figure I got also…

I knew exactly what you meant marcus. I had observed this dual limit thing.
I guess the cameras must be calibrated to allow for the increase to 50 in places.
Truth be told, there’s so many sets of cameras along that stretch you’ve a job to know when you are “in” or “out” of a timed segment. I believe if you are travelling thru’ more than one segment, you are continually timed. i.e. a set of cameras can be both the end of one segment & beginning of the next.

Simply the old (Average) Speed = Distance / Time formula would be applied I’d imagine.

You already worked out the average speed allowed (just like they would have done), you know the distance so you can work out the time allowed to traverse that distance… Time = Distance / Speed.

Likewise, Distance = Time * Speed so as long as you have two variables the other one follows.

It’s probably better (for them) to use them on staggered limits as you’re probably more likely to stick to the limits as your brain approaches meltdown trying to work it all out. "Right, that was 45mph thro’ the first 3km, erm, better slow to, errrr… der, um…er…Argh! TOO LATE  "

You often see kids applying the theory near to schools as an exercise except that they don’t give you a ticket :open_mouth:

Well I had my 45 on there yesterday wonder what that did to my average speed.

we regularly run over the 616, and driving through the specs cameras I generally stick the cruise control on at 39mph and leave it on till I get to the other end, but as for the gatso at langsett, and near the “ye old mustard pot” Ive been know to put my foot down and brake for these cameras, but coming downhill towards flouch I try to be careful due to the cops being know to sit in gateways near thew pub and catching folks speeding, which aint difficult when you got a full load pushing you downhill

i’m pretty certain that SPECS cameras also capture your actual speed as well as average between two points. So if you do 45 passed one camera you’ll still get a ticket

Dont think these cameras are set to work out the difference in sizes of vehicles.
