A far better reply than mine, I was just going to call him a clueless [zb]
This being the internet, you can call me whatever you like from the safety of your keyboard!
However, when was the onus placed upon someone driving along at the speed limit (me) to alter their driving to suit another drivers in a situation such as this?
If I’d wanted to pass another truck doing 50mph, I’d simply have accelerated past said truck & tucked back in. Maybe Les Shoes would have difficulty comprehending this manoeuvre, but I’m sure the ‘real’ drivers on here will know what I mean.
Anyway fella…try not to lose to much sleep over it.
You appear to be suffering from a comprehension error, never mind, you’ve made your attitude to other road users clear.
You’re boring me now. Try not to worry about me or any ‘attitude’ you think I may have, too much dude. It’s really not good for you!

Travelling north through the roadworks on the A1 between Leeming and Scotch corner at around 04.00 this last Monday morning.
It IS a 50 limit, and it DOES say lane two for vehicles limited to 2 metres wide. this did not stop a Stobbies , white DAF CF ?, trying to pass me the whole length of the works.
No way could he do it, but didn’t stop him trying, but with the changes of camber and patched hardtop it’s a full time job keeping between the lines.
When we cleared the road works but before the speed de restriction he was out and attempted a pass, got alongside, at the de restriction I opened up to 56 and left him behind, he didn’t have the legs!
■■■■■■!
in a case like this I would have stradled both lanes. [zb] him , can you imagine him getting along side of you, with camber ,narrow lanes etc. he’s another one that gives good truck drivers a bad name,

There was no need to straddle both lanes, as I said, with the changes in camber, patchy hardtop etc. in places it is enough to stay on the correct side of the dividing line anyway at 50. Apart from flying, there was no way for another truck to pass.

Sat behind one on the A34 Northbound last week, from about the A303 junction - container wagon attempting to overtake a curtainsider.
11.7 miles that I clocked, which was after the first five or six minutes, so probably close to 14 miles.
I did show my appreciation when I finally did get past…
Some of the wannabe drivers on here will now tell you that the whole world should have slowed down to let the container guy past…Absolutely no way can he be at fault for sitting out there for so long!
Evil8Beezle:
Slow is boring, but it’s also less stressful!
Not driven a 56mph lorry for years now and don’t miss it a bit. Much prefer 52mph, let everyone else ■■■■ about overtaking.
I must be getting old, I’ve been driving less than a year and already think like that!
My logic is that i get paid a little more for going slower, and I don’t have to muck about pulling out and back in all the time…
And at 52 you can mostly let the ‘cruise’ auto braking hold you back on the hills without having to worry about overspeeds.
Mr Micky text absolutely responds to my way of driving… I just back of a few clicks let them pass re- address my cruise so I’m not up their arse…I don’t mind being 30 second’s late for my booking…getting there safely without inconveniencing other road user’s… Is and always be my approach to driving HGVs…been doing it that way for 35 plus years…to me it’s just common sense
No need for the whole world to slow down - or even for everyone else on that stretch of road to slow down for that matter. It just needs one driver to back off for maybe 30 seconds. But of course he won’t see it that way because “the onus is not on him” to “accommodate the clowns”…
Followed two Class 1 Monkeys yesterday on the A34 from Milton to Oxford (around 7 miles) one let me out from the slip road, the other followed me onto the 34, straight into the outside lane, I eased off & let them go, Monkey One crept up alongside Monkey Two instead of tucking in behind him & proceeded to Elephant Race for the next 7 or 8 minutes.
I knocked it back to 85 & created a bit of distance from them because I was Embarrassed by their Antics.
There must have been 50 cars queuing up behind them !
I had one the other week, he decided to overtake me on the down hill, but only got level cab to cab before the up hill when I pulled away from him. He then starts blowing his horn and waving his arms about basically saying I should have slowed down to 50ish or less so he could crawl past me at 51ish up the hill. Bôllocks to that. The tôsser can get back behind me. He lost the battle, he timed it wrong, he should accept defeat and his own poor judgement.
If someone starts creeping by me on the flat and it’s causing a tailback I usually ease off.

Its definately embarrassing to watch these elongated muppet races all it takes is 2 idiots to cause tailbacks for faster traffic. Even more embarrassing when a 3rd participant joins up the arse of the overtaking vehicle.
Not sure whos the biggest muppet, the one instigating the race or the one being overtaken for being to thick to ease off a couple of clicks. Not that they have to ease off its just the common sense thing to do.
What they dont realise is the traffic they are helping to hold up may be in their way later on.
Dropped a bollock myself the other day, coming up to a little rigid im at 52 he is doing about 49 road clear so whack her up to full thrust (54) and began to overtake but having a heavy container on I missjudged the gradient and couldnt hold the speed so accepting my error planned to ease off to tuck in safely behind the little rigid. Imagine my surprise when I saw he was flashing me in having eased off seeing I was having a problem, many gratefull indicator dances followed.
Another driver I owe a BJ to in the unlikely event I ever find out who it was. A credit to our profession.
As some have already said, I also drive around at 53 in a truck restricted to 56. I breeze past the supermarket jockeys and the limiter lords breeze past me. If I creep up on someone then I knock it from Auto Eco mode to Auto and speed up to 56. The overtake lasts about 20 seconds and I’m back in lane 1. Once I pull out a decent enough gap I knock it back into Eco mode which automatically knocks me back down to 53. Job done, no stress.
There was a situation recently when running a bit late I was on the limiter on a dual carriageway. I pulled out to let a (so called) comrade on and he left me hanging out there as he came down the slip road on the limiter. I was very gradually passing him but it was elephant racing in the extreme. My sat nav said an island was 3 mile ahead at which I was to turn right. There was nothing behind as it was in the middle of the night so I thought sod it, I’m gonna sit this out and hopefully gain the advantage to turn right at the island. Unfortunately he went straight over.
It was a stupid situation and I fail to see why people want to do this on a regular basis. It’s embarrassing to see people do it in the rush hour on the M42 and M11 etc. It just gives ammo to the Nimbys for their HGV overtaking ban. Then we’ll all be stuck behind the supermarket jockeys.
My $0.2 worth is that if 2 lorries are travelling at almost the same speed but one is even the tiniest amount slower than the other then for the sake of the progress of everyone the slower vehicle should back off. I don’t care how much of a rush you’re in, backing off to allow a faster vehicle to pass isn’t going to impact your day in any meaningful way. I’m sure there’s something about this in the highway code too, allowing faster vehicles to pass you.

We’ll have less of that sensible thinking and logic here please, this is TNUK!

A disgracefull comment that risks dragging us back to olden days when camaraderie was rife and there where drivers and screwdrivers.
It can’t be beyond the wit of man and all the computerised components to allow limiters to have a “kick down” facility - allowing acceleration to a maximum speed of 60mph for a minute, once in every 15 minutes for example, before it automatically throttles back. It would stop most of this 0.05mph overtaking.

What is all this talk of “battles” and “accepting defeat”? It’s not a bloody race!

Reading other contributors posts and agreeing with them too? Backing off to loose 5 seconds on a run?? What is the world coming to■■?

When speed limiters first appeared (no comments on my wrinkles please) I had a colleague who suggested a cure for “elephant races”: trucks should have some limiters set at 50mph some at 52, 54, and 56. I said "great you can have one of the ones set at 50, Ill have a 56 please". He didnt agree.
With a kickdown function there will always be a matching pair of fools both using it.
