7 Mile Overtake!

Travelling north through the roadworks on the A1 between Leeming and Scotch corner at around 04.00 this last Monday morning.
It IS a 50 limit, and it DOES say lane two for vehicles limited to 2 metres wide. this did not stop a Stobbies , white DAF CF ?, trying to pass me the whole length of the works.
No way could he do it, but didn’t stop him trying, but with the changes of camber and patched hardtop it’s a full time job keeping between the lines.
When we cleared the road works but before the speed de restriction he was out and attempted a pass, got alongside, at the de restriction I opened up to 56 and left him behind, he didn’t have the legs!
■■■■■■!

Any reason why you did not ease off and let him past?

I was not trying to be a policeman.
For the reasons I stated, lane two along most of that stretch is definitely not wide enough for an overtake, and it’s a 50 limit which I was doing.
IF he had got past me, he’d at least lose his mirrors, but I would have been overtaking him immediately out of the road works, so he would have gained ■■■■ all!
I’ll give way to anyone, but to let him overtake me would have meant pulling off, which there is little opportunity along that stretch, sorry, not on, I was doing as much as could be done in the circumstances, if another trucker wants to speed and attempt an illegal, and dangerous overtake, he’s better off behind me!

Fair enough just wondered. I understand now.
He was just hovering behind you. I imagined he was along side you.
Stobbies seem to have employed some cap drivers recently.

GROAN! Old ones are the best

Pah, that stories nothnig compared to the time I was a volunteer firefighter and a guy kept up with us the whole time we were speeding to a fire. Sirens blazing, we battered along at up to 90 mph but he was STILL there at the back bumper. When we stopped, he jumped out and rushed up to us.
“Thank god I caught you” he said “My kids thought we’d missed you. Two 99’s and double nougat please”

Had a Co-op lorry take 5 miles or so to pass me on the A90 not long ago. I was on cruise control at 80kph (or 50mph in old money) & this fella must have been doing 0.001mph faster than me, he absolutely refused to open it up a bit to get past then pull in out the way of the mile of cars behind him!

And you absolutely refused to knock it off cruise for 5 seconds and let him past? :unamused:

Yep, not my problem. If he wants to dawdle past like that, instead of putting the foot down for the duration of the overtake, then he can suit himself. Do you think I should slow down to accommodate these clowns?

Like some gantry signs you see … ‘‘Be a considerate driver’’ Why not ? No one will consider you as a knob if you were but might do if you wasn’t !!

Reminds me of the time I was trying to get around the Periferique,(Paris ring road),when there was a transport strike on. All lanes stopped except the outside lane that must be kept free for emergency vehicles.
Along the outside lane comes a fire engine, blues and twos going.
A couple of English truckers took the initiative and pulled out and followed the fire engine, must have worked because I never saw them again!

Er - you wouldn’t do it to “accommodate the clown”, you would (as a professional driver) do it to accommodate all the other road users backed up behind you…

Highway Code Rule 168 applies here.

They weren’t backed up behind me, they were backed up behind him, outside lane! You could spend all day adjusting your speed etc to suit these other drivers, I wasn’t on the limiter, if he’s in a hurry, let him do the speed adjusting bit, & get his truck past & out the way!

I’d love to be able to overtake something, but I’m currently limited to 50 (although the SatNav says 49!)
I have a container lorry overtake me today just before a hill, and it very quickly became clear he was heavy, as he slowed down to just below 40. I could have had my moment of glory, but thought why bother, he’ll overtake me again the moment we get on the flat…
Slow is boring, but it’s also less stressful!

And people wonder why other drivers get the hump with lorry drivers…

MickyB666:
If the overtake is going to take a stupid amount of time I always back off whether I’m the one being overtook or the one doing the overtaking, I think it is inconsiderate to other road users to hog the whole road for a protracted length of time especially on a dual carriageway. :open_mouth:

+1

■■■■■■!

in a case like this I would have stradled both lanes. ■■ him , can you imagine him getting along side of you, with camber ,narrow lanes etc. he’s another one that gives good truck drivers a bad name,

A far better reply than mine, I was just going to call him a clueless ■■■■

A lot of the members here get the hump with 'lorry driver’s, the others are the problem…

Not driven a 56mph lorry for years now and don’t miss it a bit. Much prefer 52mph, let everyone else ■■■■ about overtaking.

This being the internet, you can call me whatever you like from the safety of your keyboard!

However, when was the onus placed upon someone driving along at the speed limit (me) to alter their driving to suit another drivers in a situation such as this?

If I’d wanted to pass another truck doing 50mph, I’d simply have accelerated past said truck & tucked back in. Maybe Les Shoes would have difficulty comprehending this manoeuvre, but I’m sure the ‘real’ drivers on here will know what I mean.

Anyway fella…try not to lose to much sleep over it. :unamused:

I must be getting old, I’ve been driving less than a year and already think like that! :open_mouth:
My logic is that i get paid a little more for going slower, and I don’t have to muck about pulling out and back in all the time…

Seen the odd overtake on the M11, go from the A11 junction to Stansted, since it’s been my regular weekly commute.

You appear to be suffering from a comprehension error, never mind, you’ve made your attitude to other road users clear.
