On the A1 Northbound this afternoon I witnessed what is probably the longest overtake I’ve ever seen. For over 7 miles two foreign registered attics played ■■■ for tat on a two carriageway section of motorway. Lane 2 edges forwards on the up hill, then lane 1 edges forward on the downhill, then repeat, and repeat… Traffic was backing up as far as I could see by the time the overtake was finally completed.
Without blaming either driver, (although I was, stuck in the tailback… ). What is the longest overtake you’ve ever witnessed/ experienced?
Took me 9 miles to overtake a DHL wagon that wouldn’t give in on the A46. Same as you, up, down hills ■■■ for tat. Thankfully there was hardly any traffic on the roads. Had other times where I’ve had to have multiple go’s at getting past someone. Can’t make it stick so have to slow down to slot back in to the let the traffic go past then have another go. Being ■■■■■■■ to 53 is irritating.
Try driving at 51 then Radar. Not being flippant mate, but you’ll transform your mindset if you drop it off the limiter a tad. You’ll not get them hunched up shoulders and you’ll lose the mentality of “must get past at all costs”. Plus, driving at 51mph will gives you a massive 2mph to play with when you do catch something up!

Speedo says 53 but I think its actually 52 because I get past by our Scanias that are also limited to “53”.
Had a Co-op lorry take 5 miles or so to pass me on the A90 not long ago. I was on cruise control at 80kph (or 50mph in old money) & this fella must have been doing 0.001mph faster than me, he absolutely refused to open it up a bit to get past then pull in out the way of the mile of cars behind him!

He can’t go any faster, those are limited to 50 like the Gregs and Tesco lot. They are the only few that I can pass, along with Bidvist
Longest overtake on a 2 lane road I’ve ever seen was livingston to hearthill. You don’t really get much of it anymore, think drivers are finally starting to wise up. Well in my opinion I don’t see it as much as I used to.
Im surprised if anyone gets passed me. The tipper units at our place have a very generous cruise, did our yard in Gloucester to Sheffield in 2hr 43min once
I followed a wide load (a humungous yacht on a trailer) along the a14 about 18 months ago. The ■■■■■■ was blocking trucks from going past due to the hull bulge sticking into lane 2. Didn’t stop the box jockey who spent the journey from red lodge to the a140 from sitting behind the ■■■■■■ in lane 2, causing a massive tailback of cars.

And you absolutely refused to knock it off cruise for 5 seconds and let him past?
If the overtake is going to take a stupid amount of time I always back off whether I’m the one being overtook or the one doing the overtaking, I think it is inconsiderate to other road users to hog the whole road for a protracted length of time especially on a dual carriageway.

Not to defend a fellow box jockey for being a knob, but why couldn’t the wide load have pulled over a couple of times, there are numerous layby’s along there, that would have accommodated the load you describe, and then all the traffic and not just light vehicles could of got by, Newmarket to Beacon Hill is to far to long a run without letting traffic pass

As has been mentioned before, if you don’t drive on the limiter all the time then you give yourself the leeway to play with
Can’t understand it - I stick my CC on at 85kph and trundle along. Not very often I (slowly) come up behind another truck. Once I’m close enough, I pull out and overtake (at 90kph), then settle back down to 85 once past. No stress, and in the real world it makes SQRT(FA) difference to arrival times.
Travelling north through the roadworks on the A1 between Leeming and Scotch corner at around 04.00 this last Monday morning.
It IS a 50 limit, and it DOES say lane two for vehicles limited to 2 metres wide. this did not stop a Stobbies , white DAF CF ?, trying to pass me the whole length of the works.
No way could he do it, but didn’t stop him trying, but with the changes of camber and patched hardtop it’s a full time job keeping between the lines.
When we cleared the road works but before the speed de restriction he was out and attempted a pass, got alongside, at the de restriction I opened up to 56 and left him behind, he didn’t have the legs!

around 3am i sat behind 2 trucks that were neck and neck all the way from Carlisle to Johnstonebridge, thats when the inside truck pulled off for the services

That’s a fair point - they were moving at a decent speed (about 45 mph), but could have had a clear out a couple of times.

Any reason why you did not ease off and let him past?
Not in an hgv but I was in my car once when I noticed a guy on a bike along side me when I was doing 30. Then when the limit increased to 40 he was STILL there beside me, matching speed. “■■■■ this” I thought and went on the dual carriageway. Right up to 60 and he was STILL there beside me, matching my speed. I wondered why he didnt pass or drop off so I wound the speed right up to 70 then 80 but he was STILL there trying to overtake. After about 20 or so miles he was STILL there so I pulled in to find out what the hell was going on.
Turns out his jacket was caught in my door
