7.5 tonners

Any old gits here (over 40) on these tiddlers? Im just looking at my options, and I can drive them whatever happens. Trouble is, a lot of the time they seem to be a young, or at least very fit, mans game, racing about and a bazillion drops ect! So, whats the crack with these type of jobs for someone of a more sedate nature?

Hi mal
one of my neighbours drives a 7.5 and its a cracking job he delivers big reels of cable to railway works 2 drops a day then goes back the next day to collect the empty reels 3 nights out Ā£400 a week he says easiest job he’s ever had :sunglasses:

The job sounds great Si, it’s a shmae her indoors has got your number M8! Theres a firm by me that does actually pay half decent for tiddlers, but it’s rope&sheet, I can do the job, but it’s a bit rough for a gent more used to the boxes!

Oy Mal, you speak for yourself, some of us mid 40’s have a hell of a lot left to do in life yet. … & if i happen to mention about being old at 46 to any female person in Thailand, (not that i talk to them much  ) I’m shot down in flames & told i’m a young man :exclamation:

Postman Pat!

Got a Sprinter on with Parcel Force (his own, in their livery) the usual 80 - 120 parcels a day.
Did a part day for him once…was interesting (well he just happens to run the area i grew up in) but sure wouldn’t want to be doing it all day everyday!

He now knows many of his regular drops (many are commercial), has a chat & a laugh with the females in shops etc. & quite enjoys it. Says, although he loved it at the time, he does not miss running the artic & all the responsibilities at all.
I remember one time going to France with him, as we ambled along a particularly scenic stretch we met an English car & caravan coming the other way, to which he commented: ā€œlook at that, cost him Ā£100’s to get over here for a few days, I see this every week & get paid for itā€!
(Coffee will knowwhat’s being said here!)

Better be careful what i say, he looks in here now & again (interested in Middle East run threads etc). Hia Mark.

Not much 7.5 tonner work about. I know someone who drives one delivering polystyrene flooring, light as anything, the truck could almost float away.

What about supermarket delivery, tesco or somerfield, dont know how bad the job is?

What are you like on the spanners Mal, the speck lift breakdown boys use 7.5’s & earn very good money.

Hey Mal…your thread sure did stir up the memories…i went through a phase a few years ago…where i was out of work…and my licence was up for renewal…so i goes to the job centre.and explains the situation…£? for medical…£? for licence renewal…£■■ …thats what i need and ill go to work..well they wouldnt give me a penny..so i said ok ill sign on then…so the african bird behind the counter said…right what do you do for a living…so i said HGV driver…but i got no licence cos its outta date and i havnt got the money to renew it…plus the medical money…well she said ive got a job right here..HGV driver..so when i explained the about the licence..she said well get the job first and then when youve got some money…send off for the licence…i cant get a job with an out of date licence…so she rang the firm to ask…they said what i had said.so now we`re back to square one…ok you gotta give me 3 types of job you can do…so i said…driver…driver…driver…not good she said…so i said driver.plumber.carpenter
we ended up having a great big row till i told her to stuff it…and walked out…a mate offered a double man job to swiss…and that paid for my renewal…but good luck with the ice cream cart mal…is it one of those with 2 wheels at the front and 1 wheel at the back…sorry mate got cross tracked…white van man is it…a ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  driver…or the 7.5 ton…go for the smaller one Mal…less work…no i doubt it …the smaller they are the more you have to do…and no tachos either…you can run almost 24 hrs a day…not for the faint hearted…but good luck anyway whatever you choose to do…i wish you well…
have a nice day

The law states the maximum you can drive a van is 10 hours a day, 7 days a week, but it appears to be uninversally ignored.

I was made redundant in March and now drive a7.5 tonner for a farm supplies firm, all local work 8-5:30 Monday to Friday. Tomorrow four drops and will do about 100k max and I’m earning more than I was driving a 24 tonner

Nice one Dave, I see you get to leave it on the front garden an’all!

There is a story in commercial motor Mal.

Inchcape Automotive are replacing their 9 / 10 car carriers for 2 car carriers on 7.5 tonne chassis.

It said it makes more sense for them as the cars can be delivered quicker that way and also solve the driver shortage
