Your wasting your breath on these armchair truckers who knock a hard grafter!

There are those who “Do” and those who “Don’t”

Very true. Winners and losers in every trade.

Im happy with my job and my wages, if I was’nt I would move, very quickly, confidently knowing my class 1, contacts and experience will keep me right.

Personally, I don’t think any amount of money is worth being away from your home and family for five nights and six days a week.

I feel sorry for anyone who sees a visit home as too much trouble.

^^^ +1. 100%

stick me on that one as well.

i treat work as something that gets in my way of being at home. although when im at work il do what i have to do till il go home and if that means 15 hrs then it means 15 hrs. if im away in the lorry then il max my hours out as id rather be working and earning than sitting watching a film or whatever others do.

^^ This!!

The only thing that gets on my ■■■■, is when I pay for something, a concert, a holiday etc, and work tries to get in the way… NO! The reason I go to work is to pay for this ■■■■, so I’m doing it, you’re truck’s in the yard and I’ll speak to you tomorrow. If I’m jobhunting again, then I’m jobhunting, but I’d rather be out of a job than working for a ■■■■ that tries to take over your life outside work.

Survived 3 days at 1 firm because I’d told them at interview I had a concert and a few things went wrong, trailer not ready, meaning I was late to deliveries meaning I was in queues, so I phoned and explained the situation, last job won’t be getting done, YES it will… blah blah, truck’s back in yard with last job on.

It’s all about swings and roundabouts and what you want from the job.
I’m willing and able to do 6 days work with 5 nights out as long as it doesn’t interfere with plans I have, if it will, the planner and boss will be notified well in advance, if they don’t take that notification on board, then they’ll get a shock.

I’m now back on containers, it’s not the best paid job, but it suits me and my lifestyle, I go to work Monday with a truck full of gear prepared to be away all week, but I’m also happy to be home, the missus gets a nice suprise and her lover has to jump from the bedroom window  .

My basic take home is around 330 ish with no nights out, but I did 5 nights out with a bit of o/t through the week and a few hours sat morning and took home just short of 600, which pays for the stuff I enjoy.

Last night, I took the missus out to a restaurant that I couldn’t have afforded a water in a few years ago, last week we were at a charity event and I bid (and won) on an auction for a ferrari drive for a day, few weeks before that we took caravan into Wales and went on a steam train with beer on it.

Basically, we live a good life that needs paying for by doing the hours, but if I’m home everynight, we just enjoy quiet nights in, catch up on tv shows and snuggle on the sofa.

I see the advantages from both sides, and I’m happy to do a mix where I’m not away all week every week, but do enough of them to earn some half decent money and few enough of them to enjoy my family life.

Where is the 69 hours ?

I see

57.50 mon-fri
11.50 mon-fri overtime = 69

  • saturday 5.75 = 74.75
  • sunday 0.75 = 75.50
Then you do 5 nights out
so you leave 05:15 monday and get back saturday dinner time ? then start again monday for £862 (75 and half hours) I wish i had that job

I work 5 days no nights out doing around 55-58 hours a week for £580-£600 aweek (You can ask for ex-days and nights out runs if you want to do them)

We’d all be Braindead if Happysack and all us other guys and gals didn’t move the stuff about to feed the numbties who call us Braindead! :unamused:

You don’t have to take it the wring way, not so long back there was a thread on here where many were saying it’s the easiest money they’ve ever made cause there’s nothing tto it. I’m not saying all drivers are brain dead but it is a mind numbingly boring job that doesn’t stimulate me at a hence my comment.
As for the numptie bit, I would suggest anyone that thinks a 70 hour week away from home is good is a bigger numptie :stuck_out_tongue: no matter how you dress up the top line it’s still £7.75 p/h

thats seven shifts

I’ve recently split from my husband (a tramper). He chose to work away saying he would rather have money in his pocket than come back every night with just the minimum time off. We’d been together 15yrs & have 3 children. He’ll admit he misses his kids but it wasn’t enough. What started as a necessity moneywise becomes a way of life. For some drivers it’s in the blood & they miss it if there not out all week. The higher wage is a bonus.

Same here - did tramping for the money, def not for the enjoyment. Sometimes worked from Sunday to Fri night or Monday early to Sat lunchtime. Missed the kids growing up - boys football - all weekend activities - everything about their schooling, helping them with homework, etc. When at home usually slept to make up for the bad nights sleeping in the tin box! and didn’t feel like family activities on the weekend! Cash in pocket - yes, but at what cost? Answer: no wife, kids who wondered who you are and just a sad life, meeting other truckers everyday who do nothing but moan about their jobs/firms/vehicles. . . ! Oh for proper conversation just once a week!!
You are with the vehicle 24hours over five/six days which even at the ESL quoted wages equals less than £6.70 an hour over 5.5 days. You cannot put a price on lost life/wife - the benefit of hindsight is a marvellous thing
