My lad has just got a NIP through for a 51 in a 30. Mobile scammera van. (in a well known hot-spot )
I can’t help but raise a wry smile as I said a few months back that sooner or later he would be caught if he didn’t slow down.
So, he’s 24, first offence.
Reading online, he’s in ban territory here and 6 points! That’s a ■■■■■■ as my mrs will no doubt end up taxiing him to work and back for 2 months although she can use his car and fuel.
We’ve all been there as kids but 51 in a 30 is blatant ■■■■ taking.- its not 1983 anymore.
What can he expect??
Attend court?
Ban plus fine or is it one or the other?
It’ll also kill his insurance, was due to go down at 25 yo too!
About 6-7yrs ago I got caught doing 97 in a 60 (Duel carriageway in a van so got a SP10) and had to go to court. Got no points, 14 day ban and fined £250.

That aint too bad, but its all gone up and changed now. It can be upto 175% of your weekly wage for being over by that margin.
The only thing from what i can gather he has for him is that its a first offence but I reckon they will also see it as a blatant disregard for the law and taking the ■■■■.
They always frown more upon offences in residential areas which I’m assimnung he was if it was a 30 limit…did he not think what would happen if a nun carrying a box of kittens stepped out in front of him ?!
Looking like a ban tbh,I don’t think they’ll take into consideration the fact it’s his first offence…that just means he’s never been caught, not that he’s never speeded

Luckily so far I haven’t had any points so cannot help with what the punishment might be.
If it were me I would be looking at the local bus and taxi services and making sure the Mrs doesn’t taxi him about. Then he might respect the privilege of having a driving licence in the future

That was more my thinking as well TBH mate and it was a residential area. I haven’t got a great deal of sympathy. I can understand getting done for slightly over but 51…
Learnt the hard way. I got done back in 2005 but that was 38 in a 30 and was long before they hammered you.
The insurance thing will also be abit of a bummer, that’ll count for 6 years IIRC??

I’ll be having that chat shortly. He lives next door and is keeping a low profile- yet to face the music.
Don’t be too hard on the lad, i’ve done some things in the past that would make your hair stand on end, and no you wouldn’t get away with it now and no i wouldn’t do it now.
You can’t fit an old head on young shoulders, just look on the bright side no bugger got hurt, hopefully if he goes to court in genuine remorse, smart and polite and is suitably apologetic then it won’t be as bad as could be worse case.
If he considers a solicitor as one of mine was recently advised elsewhere , well they’re bloody good snake oil salesman, drained £1000 fees out of the youngsters pocket who still got the maximum possible punishment.
And no whilst we want to help our youngsters out, if we make it too easy for them by taxiing then everywhere it won’t be a punishment they will learn from.

What are those things sticking out of the bottom of his body? I thought they were called legs.
If that is simply too much for the family then there is always the bus however many changes it entails.
During my 2 week ban I didn’t even get time off work as the boss got an agency driver who lived in my town to drive me to/from work each day and he would drive my runs and I was his sat nav and drivers mate as the work was multi drop food service in London.
So my punishment was the £250 fine and whatever the insurance difference was but it did save me 2 weeks of fuel.

I do feel for the silly bugger though.
All very true!
I was far from an angel back in the day too, but I never got caught. It took until 2005 until I did get caught but it was only a little over the 30 mph.
These days, there’s so many speed traps and unmarked cars about, its very different out there now compared with 20 or 30 years ago.
51 in a 30 is taking the pee as said. Yet people still drive like idiots.
I’m no angel but I try to drive within the speed limits mostly.
I would expect if he gets a fine adn pints to just accept it and move on, however it depends if its within the margin for being dealt with by post. If not then it’s likely to be court and becomes more expensive and the possibility of a ban.
That will be down to a number of factors and his young age and relative inexperience they may be more lenient on him maybe if he’s lucky.
Problem is these days there are so many cameras about. It’s only a matter of time.
Same with the speed cameras on motorways. You see cars flying past well over 70 then get flashed and there speed soon drops yet they know the cameras are there and continue to risk it til they get caught.
Fine will be least of his worries. I wouldn’t want his car insurance quotes on renewal for the next few years when he has to tick that “have you ever been banned from driving” box.

Scammera van? It’s hardly a scam catching someone doing 21mph over the limit in more than likely a built up area now is it.
Hot spot? Even less of an excuse as your sort expecting enforcement might be there.
I’d say most likely he will get a fine and points, but there’s s chance he will be summoned to court to explain to the magistrates why he felt the need to do that speed. If banning was on the cards though and he needs to drive to get to work to make a living then that’s also his chance to explain that to them and they have been known to drop bans for that. I once heard of a story where someone had about 30 points on his licence but still managed to not be banned as he begged the magistrates that he wouldn’t be able to feed and clothe his kids if he couldn’t drive. In that case I’d say you’ve had your chances, not learned your lesson, go and find a new job. But there you go, that’s allegedly what happened.
Umm - many years ago when I was younger, better looking and not so sensible. I got done for 52 in a 30.
Long and short of it I got 6 points and a fairly large fine.Plus being a new driver I was made to redo my test.
I can’t remember what it did to insurance. But it wasn’t dramatic or I would. It just shows as an SP30 - and insurance companies didn’t ask how fast I was going.
I’ve now has a clean licence for year and years - and I’m a highly skilled professional driver . So we all grow up and change. He didn’t hurt anyone or himself so it might be a good lesson for him like it was me.
I got done on the M180 by a camera van about 2005. I got caught doing 101mph and braking in the rain. Totally reckless and irresponsible i know. I ended up in court. I pleaded guilty from the outset and offered no excuse. The police solicitor on the day told me he was seeking a ban and the full fine available. I was also expecting this and had taken my old man to court (in Scunthorpe i lived in Dewsbury) to drive me home. I ended up with 4 points and a £345 fine. Luckily i kept my license and my job, but the trip home with my old man was the longest lecture i had ever endured…learnt my lesson though, no poi ts since.
They don’t seem to give out points and a ban, I guess because they both last about the same time on your licence and ban is equal to 12 points in eyes of insurance so no point (no pun intended). As long as he realises that if he’s not got points, this is going to absolutely hammer the hell out of his insurance and might require a specialised company. He’ll have to tell his insurance at the time of the ban or points anyway so they might even cancel his policy.
One thing I did hear someone do which seemed to help was swap a sporty car for a bog standard one. Didn’t stop him being banned, but the magistrates did seem to look more favourably on it in their comments, although of course only applies if he’s got a GTi or similar to start with (impossible to insure anyway from now on). A 1.1 Fiesta would be a good choice as it’s not seen as remotely sporty by them or his insurance so might only cost £5000 with black box (insurance not car).
First offence might help, but his age doesn’t as he’ll be seen as a “boy racer”. Presumably he’s had the licence longer than 2 years?
As for driving his car - is that via a separate insurance policy or his? If his, she’d need to check his insurance is still valid and if she’s a secondary driver, they might not be happy since the main driver who’s assumed to be driving most of the time, can’t.
Personally, rather than hamming him directly, I’d do it subtly and say there’s the bus timetable get on with it. I know we all do stupid things in our yoof, but there’s going up in front of the beak for steeling a traffic cone or getting in a drunken fight, and then there’s stuff that can kill people. Harsh penalties that actually affect you every day tend to make people sit up and take notice rather than think “phew, got away with that”.
What he’ll get - totally depends on the magistrate on the day as they have a “range of options” which is dependent on what they had for breakfast.
Losing a licence isn’t the end of the world re insurance, just tell the absolute truth on the comparison sites and see what comes up, it may not be as bad as you might imagine.
ie i know someone in their 30’s with a 300hp new car who after regaining licence had to pay £600 for the first year’s cover incl business use, being 24 it won’t be quite as cheap as that but i wouldn’t be swapping into a 900cc shoe box just yet
I hope the lad gets a high fine and points and not a ban.
