mrginge:
About 6-7yrs ago I got caught doing 97 in a 60 (Duel carriageway in a van so got a SP10) and had to go to court. Got no points, 14 day ban and fined £250.
I got caught doing 90 near Dalwhinne on the A9 single carriageway bit in my car, 6 points and £350 fine reduced to 5 points and £300 fine, also about 6 or 7 years ago but never attended court.
I got stopped by a copper with a radar gun the other day.
“Bit of a speed merchant are we, sir?” he asked.
“A bit, now and then,” I replied, “but I only sell to friends.”
So as well as three points I’m now looking at three months.
trevHCS:
They don’t seem to give out points and a ban, I guess because they both last about the same time on your licence and ban is equal to 12 points in eyes of insurance so no point (no pun intended). As long as he realises that if he’s not got points, this is going to absolutely hammer the hell out of his insurance and might require a specialised company. He’ll have to tell his insurance at the time of the ban or points anyway so they might even cancel his policy.
That would not surprise me TBH.
He’s got a 2.0L Diesel Beemer aswell, I also wouldn’t be surprised if he now ends up having to sell it.
I did warn him 12 months ago that if he got done for speeding that his insurance would go through the roof.
But like Juddian has said above, you can’t put an old head on young shoulders, its his f*** up, he’s now gota deal with it!
its easily done, speeding in winter . in the long run he will actually be quids in, saving the money on fuel by careful driving for the next 20 yrs adds up

Ok The guy has been a fool, how many of us have been there? Its not as though you go round a corner and all of the local kids are out playing kingball in the street like it was 1956. He could mention his charity work if there is a court hearing I have been told that that helps.
got done 49 in a 30 (coming into a village on the A697) (thankfully they didn’t put me on the scales or I might of made the newspapers) but it was 1995 so it was only 3 points and 40 smackaroonies - it would be tea with aunty beverly now.

I usually run a mile from speeding threads as it brings out the self-righteous on both sides but 51 in a 30 zone is ludicrous and he deserves a ban. Unfortunately, if he is banned, it won’t be for long enough.
My boy is 20, 19 at the time he was caught doing 84 in a 70 on the A30 coming home for the weekend.
Luckily, I was home when postie arrived and I looked at the envelope and guessed what it was so opened it. I called and first words from me were “What speed were you doing”? His reply “at what time”?
We’d had numerous friendly chats about his speed before this and one serious chat about it after.
I sent the letter to him and told him that if he ever gets another I’ll leave it laying around for his mother to find (she doesn’t know about the first one).
Just that last threat is enough to slow him down to sensible speeds.
Let your wife deal with him, he probably fears her more than you. If he doesn’t fear her now, after a few weeks of her being up at silly o’clock to take him to work and being stuck in rush hour traffic he will do.

Now where’s those pursed lips . . .
It probably isn’t as ludicrous as you might expect, in the sorts of places that camera vans stake out.
I can think of multiple places where 20mph over the speed limit is considered perfectly reasonable by a sensible driver, and those are precisely the sorts of places where camera vans tend to operate.
They aren’t always long stretches, and are often at the edge of a much higher limit, but you’d have to be living in another world to imagine that most drivers who are caught for speeding nowadays, were actually driving in an unreasonable manner at the time.

They’re often in places that were previously a higher speed limit too. Two favourite haunts near Frome are in Oldford and also in Rode and both places were national speed limit within living memory. Oldford was reduced to a 30mph because a factory worker got knocked off their bike and Rode because a young copper crashed his patrol car.
Oldford is now too unnecessarily slow it isn’t built up it could still comfortably be a 40mph if not a 50mph. Rode was always probably far too fast at national speed limit but although it goes through a village there is no footpath or pedestrians also it’s twisty and narrow so everything slowed down anyway. Even so it should probably never have been more than 40mph.
I would much rather they used the resources and focused on wet days and areas like outside schools and other areas, and times, where there are likely to be pedestrians as a lot of these villages everyone crawls through at 30mph on A roads never have anyone walking around in the daytime
The court will not care about how a ban will affect your son, but…
If he turns up dressed smartly, bring polite and showing genuine remorse and can explain how a driving ban will adversely affect other people (Wife, kids, boss etc) he will more than likely avoid a ban, or get a lenient one.

Thank me later.

Doesn’t always work, mate of mine got a 6 month ban for getting 15 points (was on 9 then got another 3 for speeding then another 3 for the same whilst waiting for his court date)
Took evidence from hospital and doctors that he needed to get his elderly dad to multiple hospital visits on a weekly basis, judge wasn’t interested at all told him to find a good taxi firm.
6 of the 9 points he had were 2 months away from coming off his licence.

That’s what getting a job as a sales rep and been handed the keys to a new BMW as a company car does to you
BiL is a manager for a large company, working over multiple sites. He’s just come down from 22 points to 16 in the past month. He’s always represented by the company lawyer. He’s never been banned even though he admits he should have been.
