I was in my van following a tipper t’other day, he/she was doing 60 consistently. How do you get away with that 1 then? . Was on an A road coming back from Carlisle to Newcastle.
Paid by the load don’t ya know?
Obviously not a lot per load if they have to legit.
What about ones tacho and overspeed? I’m a noob so please forgive my ignorance on such matters

I’m hourly paid. But some days I just want to get home.
Im the same m8,sometimes youve had enough and cant get home quick enough, friday afternoons/satdy morning im ready for home, when it gets past 1oclock on satdy afternoon when the roads are quiet with lorries ,im really ready
So many tippers fly about because whoever “plans” the work has to get enough loads shifted to make the job pay. Tipper companies love to price for work so low just to stop a competitor getting it. I worked briefly for a haulier who hired us out to a contractor who, after our day rates, and tipping charges, profit was close to zero. The first few days we did the number of loads easy (no rushing, proper breaks) until one hero did one extra. Next day we all get the extra load to do.
I will say those lorries who stick to quarry products like asphalt, tend to drive slower and more sensibly.
Conor:
If you’re on hourly pay why would you want to do 50? All you’re doing is taking money out of your own pocket.
You would only need to hang the job out if your on a pathetic hourly rate

this ^.
I charge hourly and at a rate such that 8 hours is a perfectly adequate income so have no need nor requirement to hang the job out by doing 40mph. I want to get the job done and get on my way home asap so I spend time with my family and on my hobbies. I really don’t get this “I do 40mph because I’m paid hourly” crap that most people write on here. Makes no sense to me unless - as ajt says - you’re on crap rates, in which case you’ve got bigger problems to worry about it.

Better get your van speedometer checked as it running a tad slow
Essix Blue:
Surely if you’re doing 40 not 50 you have to do quite some mileage for it to make a difference to the length of your shift?
I’ll be sticking at 40 thanks.
As you like playing policeman, why don’t you become a Special Constable?
Or be a proper pretend traffic cop and buy a Rover (other crap cars available) with one of those silly fish symbols and a National Trust sticker in the window, and choose what speed you want everyone to do.
Or you could work for Tesco; I bet they’ll still drive well under the limit to take my safety seriously.

Even If we say the day would be 1/4 hour shorter, that would cost me a grand a year! That’s my holiday!!!

And yes, I do pullover when I can!
If the limits 50 you can still get stopped for not keeping up with the flow of traffic, just move along and have another 15mins at your drop instead of acting like you are driving a combine harvester

This is news to me. Do you have anymore information about it ?
You will gain minor marks during your driving test for impeding traffic if the examiner feels you are too slow for the road and conditions.
He’s not on a driving test?
It’s a limit not a target. You wouldn’t get stopped doing 40 in a 50.
Not uncommon for tractors to get ticketed for having too long queue of cars behind without pulling over.
If the powers that be have decided 50mph is safe then so be it. Where does it end, why not do 46 on the motorway, 20mph in a 30mph or why not even crawl round the 20mph zone in Bristol at 10mph?

If the road conditions mean that a safe speed is less than the MAXIMUM speed limit then the figures you quote are perfectly acceptable.
There are many SC A roads in the UK where 50 mph in a car would be dangerous let alone in a 44T truck, there are also sections of SC where 56 mph would be safe, as has been said before speed limits are a maximum not a target.

Please read the thread fully, and see my earlier posts, as this was covered already, and is a response to assorted people saying they will continue doing no more than 40mph in all circumstances despite the law being changed.
