Being over here we don’t get to hear details, but does anyone know what actually happened ?
All occupants were Romanian and the lorry driver has been released on bail. Guess the investigation will take some time.
Thanks. I wonder if the full story will be published. I was a back seat passenger in a car fitted with this emergency braking thing when a car joined the motorway in front of us. No drama, but the bloody brakes went on and it wasn’t our driver. As someone said, what happens when you’ve got a numpty in a truck or whatever, right up your clacker ?

Haaa. With the amount of 'professional ’ Old timers ’ decrying that system, who knows.
I’m an old timer as you put it, it’s a great system, I love it on mine and wouldn’t want to be without it.

I can see the benefit of having this in a truck, would you really want it to slam the brakes on in your car in a situation of non-equipped vehicles following you, or would you rather be in control of your avoiding action?
Quite a few car manufacturers have put this in to their cars now… absolutely madness how a system can be so controversial yet “safe”
We have these systems on our latest Actros’ as I believe it’s now law to have it on new trucks, not a choice!.
I also have the same systems on my 65 plate Volvo car.
I must admit I do sometimes turn off the lane guidance as it can be a nuisance in windy conditions or in road works with narrow lanes.
Having said that, on our Actros’ if you switch off the lane guidance, it still monitors your driving, and if you continue to get too close to the white line too often, a warning comes up on the dash, “Driver assist, break needed?”, and the lane guidance system comes
on again.
Two points
I can not see how you can be ‘done’ for not having that facility switched on in an accident by the fact that there is an ‘off’ switch there in the first place. If it was deemed compulsory in a court of law (or even necessary) to use it, it would not be on a switch in the first place.
Secondly it does not matter a ■■■■ what nationality those people were, it was a tragedy whatever , and I have sympathy with their families.
I nearly lost my eldest boy in an rta, so I always think how lucky I am when I see these situations.
Also another thing, I am not saying anything about the driver who was arrested, as I do not know the circumstances in this case, but once over I always used to pre judge these type of situations in favour of the truck driver, being a one myself.
Where as nowadays I am not so quick to do so when I see some of the sorry arsed pathetic ■■■■ s in charge of trucks today.

Why do they provide a switch to disable the AEBS ? is there certain situations when you need to switch it off ?
(I have never driven a wagon with all these high tech electronic driver aids so I don’t know much about them)

If the system malfunctions, and if you fit something like a snow plow it must be turned off (according to the Volvo handbook)
I’ve not heard of it being required by law to have those safety features fitted but if they are required to pass the new EURO 6 regs then doesn’t effectively make them required by law?

Don’t think it’s got anything to do with euro 6. My E6 15 plate Actros at my old job didn’t have it fitted. Neither does the single E6 64 plate DAF we have at my current place. But the 15 plate onward scanias we’ve got have it fitted. So I’m guessing it’s something that became law in 2015 at some point.
I had my money on Indians to be fair. If it was a Datsun Cherry it would 100% have been Indians

if it was indians and there was 6 of them in a micra…where would they have stored the tomahawks…?

Common sense tells you fasten them to the bike rack, and being as they were adults I’m guessing they would have Choppers.

irrespective of whos to blame,i have empathy for the manfreight driver, and none elsewhere.
Not sure that it is the Manfreight driver that was arrested, it said in our local rag that it was a west midlands based driver, so it may be the Clarkes driver that is assisting the police with their inquiries as they are a West Mids based company
