vtrfire:
its 25 mins quicker if your sitting at 55 and when your going up and down 4 times a day, it soon adds up
No it isn’t.
Its 48 miles from Scotch Corner to Penrith. At 55 MPH for the total route it takes 54 minutes. At 40MPH for the total route it takes 1h 12m, the difference is 16 minutes. Except you don’t do 40MPH all the way because there’s roughly 40% of it dual carriageway so the difference between running legal and bent as you do is probably under 10 minutes. So you go up and down it 4 times a day you save 40 minutes assuming you do 55MPH from start to finish (I hope you don’t do 55 through the 40 limit at Kirby Thore) which isn’t even enough to go one full length in one direction. Assuming you mean there and back 4 times you save 1hr 20 which still isn’t enough time to do another run. So from a lost load point of view you lose nothing. From a driver’s point of view you cost yourself an hours wage whilst putting your license at risk.
also, we run at 44 tons so getting up the hills when your sat behind someone doing 40 is a nightmare
Perhaps your company should spec decent motors. I run at 40 and have no problem getting up the hills when running full weight with chipboard on and the motor I’m doing it in has over a million km on the clock. The very worst hill I drop 5MPH.

yeh becuase you can work out a journey time down to the minute with google maps… (are you a planner??). trust me mate its roughly 20-25 minutes each way saved by going flat out, with a bit of over speed down the hills to get back up the other side.
and if theres a massive que behind a 40mph lorry and your at the back you’ll be doing 30-35 most of the time becuase of the stop start effect
if i go flat out i can get to the drop point and back in 4 hours 20 mins, so obviously if i get held up i’ll have to have a break so thats 45 minutes wasted right there. now your gonna say i shoudnt be on break while i tip?? like i said i want home ASAP, couldnt give a flying ■■■■ about getting my hours in, i just want to get the job done and get home.
AAANNNNDD what motors you got? like i says we’ve got 2012 460 volvos and we run 43-44 ton (weight in/out) and up the hill by the cafe i’m doing 30mph by the top (behind a 520 tipper scania the other day and he was only just leaving me) so you must have a 750 or summin

I quoted the difference between going 55MPH all the way and 40MPH all the way. You’re not going to do 40MPH all the way even if you’re stuck behind trucks doing 40MPH. 40MPH all the way is worst case scenario.
And no I’m not a planner, just someone who understands BASIC MATHEMATICS.

For at most maybe 7 or 8 miles on the longest stretch of 40MPH on the A66.

But you don’t benefit. The only person who gets more money in their pocket is your gaffer and you actually end up working longer. Because you’re doing a run in 4h20 it means you can do 2 a day. If you really didn’t want to get the hours in you’d take that extra 25 minutes each way you claim it takes when doing 40MPH and then you’d only be able to do one as you wouldn’t have enough driving time to do 2 so you’d be home at least four hours earlier.
You’re comedy gold mate. You’re running around like a headless chicken trying to get home earlier but actually doing the job so you can do two runs and take longer, risking your license, he’s making more money and having to pay you less to do it. You’re a mug fella. Grade A mug.

What motors do we have? Well tired 6 year old DAF XF 460s. And we’re also doing 30MPH by Stainmore caff. Funny how you claim to go over it 4 times a day but can’t even name the cafe.

whatever mate, you said you only slow down by 5mph and now you slow down to 30mph? (we can all nit pick each others posts me awld fruit)
i’ll simplify it for you
if ive got to do a double run, ive got to do it ■■■■ bust. if i run out of hours i’ll be on a night out. if i smash it out i can do it in 13-14 hours.dunno about your company but ours is struggling at the mo becuase of lack of drivers etc so why not do as much as you can to help them out? (its a family run company who look after us)
the whole point of the thread was about people doing 40 on single carriageway and 55 on dual carriageway. so what the ■■■■ you on about

Based on what you say mate, they are not ‘looking after’ you at all, they are making a right ■■■■ out of you.
There is deffo NOT a 'Lack of drivers, around today, the ‘lack of drivers’ you speak of is due to the fact that not a lot of REAL drivers would work for a co that expects you to habitually break the law in terms of speed limits and driver hours rest regs, to get through the daily work load, so consequently they only attract drivers like you, that are either willing to do it, or too thick to see the real picture, or both.
The only likely reason your co maybe got the contract for said job in the first place, is that they will have quoted an extra load per day as they know you are daft enough to do it flat out (and also save them paying you a night out,) for the same price as their competitors that would achieve a load per day less as they did not run bent as you are.
It pains me to say that I actually agree with Conor on this, but I am not coming at it as a do gooder never do wrong law abiding type as I have both ran bent in the past and priced up jobs as an ex owner driver, so just take a step back and look at how you are being treat by the co that…‘look after you’ will they look after you when you run over a car at 56 in a 40 after being proved to have been working on break, maybe they will come and visit you eh?
Drivers like you have gone a long way to making the job a crock of ■■■■ to drivers like me.

Kudos to your boss for putting you in a mindset that you have to dash about and I won’t have a go at your obvious speeding antics, suffice to say as of next year we will all be going a little quicker in 40’s (I may reach 45 on straight stretches).
Anyway I have also invented a new game of annoying truckers coming in the opposite direction- if I think they are going faster than I want them too I flash my lights and give them the thumbs down to warn of a mobile speed trap when there isn’t one. I of course don’t do this if there actually is a mobile speed trap.
So vtfire if your ever going full tilt on the A66 and see a flash of lights and thumbs down from another driver just ignore it as its only me playing this game…

Regardless of your main point, I’m not surprised they can’t get drivers if they’re expecting those they have to run ragged for 13-14 hours every day. I’m not sure how that’s “looking after” you.

Pmsl I thought I was the only one who did that,I like to incorparate a minimum stretch of road too,I have this set at 8 mile ATM but I review this regularly .
Let’s keep everyone safe,Britain fights back…@ no mre than 40mph!

1 hour and 7 mins from roundabout to roundabout it took me at 4am sticking to the speed limits apart from a bit going up stainmore where I was down to 35-40 mph there was a traffic car sat in a junction near the camp too.
vtrfire:
whatever mate, you said you only slow down by 5mph and now you slow down to 30mph? (we can all nit pick each others posts me awld fruit)
I slow 5MPH on the 40MPH, the sections we were talking about although I wouldn’t expect you to be intelligent enough to work that out.

OMG the stupidity magnifies. They’re not looking after you. If they were looking after you they’d not expect you to break the speed limit and risk your license just to try and do a job that is legally impossible to do the way they’re wanting you to do it. Who gives a toss if its a family run company? Will that get you out of points on your license or get you a lighter sentence if you have a big smash?
Your company can’t get drivers because everyone in the area knows they’re crap and that you’re expected to chase yourself up your own backside to try and get the job done and probably for crap pay too.

So why did you make the "you only said you slow down 5MPH and now you slow down to 30 comment about doing 30 on the dual carriageway?

So at most he’s saving 11 minutes each way or 44 minutes a day. Don’t think I could work for a company that schedules non-night out work that tight. All it takes is the slightest thing and you’re like vtrfire ragging on the steering wheel screaming your beetroot red head off because you’re being held up for 10 minutes.
This is how I imagine vtrfire every time he has to do anything less than the limiter…
