40 mph speed limit

Do you regularly break the 40 mph single carriageway speed limit?

Do you think it’s ok to break it?

Do you think it should be changed? if so to what?

I think it should be abolished. The road conditions, load carried, driver experience. Should dictate the limit.

I can do a steady 40 for as long as it takes without losing concentration - WHY ■■?

Well ROG.

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head.
We are all different. So why have one rule for everyone Instead of choice?
Just like tacho rules. Some people sleep for 6 hours, some need 8 or 10.
Just like the speed limit. Some loose concentration at low speeds. Some don’t.
At 65mph on a motorway i could keep going like a duracell battery. At 52mph i’d need to keep stopping for 10 minutes shut eye.

never hardly do more than 70 k on single roads no need to most of the time i aint in a rush

apperently sometimes the goods are urgent

but then they can get a helicopter cant they

but i dont brake down to the speed limit just cos a bit of overun
i use the overun times as a reward of keeping to the limit

more productivity = more money
dream on suckers

If I had the choice to legally go faster and it was safe to do so, I would and I believe most on here would too

The point is that we do not legally have that choice and if we choose to break the rules then we must be prepared to accept the consequences.

I think there are a lot of single carriageway roads where the limit for LGVs can be safely raised to 50.

We decided to accept these rules when we passed our tests - if we did not intend to accept them, then why bother passing the test  - would you take part in a game of footy if did not intend to follow the rules of the game  - if you did not agree with the rules then why bother to play the game :exclamation:

I was a bugger for always doing 45 - 48 is in on the A1 just over the Scottish Border

I got caught twice, one night it was Windy the next I just never gave it a thought as I passed the Scamera.

I got the NIP for the first one and litterally ■■■■■■ myself laughing at the letter I included to the police containing a picture of the double decker trailer I was pulling, pointing out that Cockburnspath Scamera was situated in a cross winds zone and due to the wind blowing across the road next to the camera I had deliberately speeded up to 48 mph so the wind rushing down the side of the trailer from front to back would deflect the cross wind off the sea

I got a letter back off them saying they could not deal with it as it had to go to the prosecutor Fiscal but they supplied his address, so I sent it off to him to see what he said :smiling_imp:

I received another NIP for East Reston again with a Double Deck Trailer and used similar excuse & saying I also found the car drivers taking risks on that stretch of road by trying to overtake, but by travelling at 45 mph they were happy to sit behind.

I never recieved any reply, probably because he died laughing but I also never recieved any summons to go to court where a ban was undoubtedly the only outcome as I had 6pts already, 3 from the car and 3 from the truck.

I then stuck to the limit as I realised I was dicing with my livlihood but hey, if I were to go back into truck driving now I’d probably do the 45 mph again and before the do gooders say owt, Yes It would be my own fault.

Yes, Yes and 50…blimey I’m agreeing with the Philmiester.

ROG, with your pompous, know-it-all attitude, I just wonder how many times you are asked to go for a drink down the pub by your mates.

You’d probably end up hectoring them about “units of alcohol” or “the dangers of binge drinking”.

Come down from that Moral High Ground old son, you’ll fall if you’re not careful.

I went to Kings Lynn yesterday and drove along the A47. Most of it (as you know!) is single carriageway (and fairly straight) so I just set the cruise control at 42mph and trundled along! :sunglasses: Didn’t fall asleep, didn’t have any crashes and generally chilled out listening to my fave radio station. Easy.

The way I see things is this; The speed limit in some situations is silly (such as the A47 and also the long straight bits of the A52), after all, many of these roads were built by Roman dudes (and we know how they hated corners!). However…if you are involved in a collision and someone is seriously hurt or dies…the ensuing investigation is more thorough than you can ever imagine. If the cops can show that your speed was a contributory factor and that you had habitually been exceeding the limit for some time on that road, your little feet won’t touch the ground! Think about the maximum sentence for causing death by dangerous driving (14 years in prison). I’m not saying that going over 40mph on some [single carriageway] roads is dangerous, but those ■■■■■■■ coppers and the CPS will do their best to pin it on you! Trust me, I know!

I personally feel that I’d be safe doing 56mph on some of these sections…just don’t want to risk it in case some ■■■■ pulls out in front of me and dies as a result of my truck obliterating him/her!

Depends on circumstances, firstly safety i wouldnt exceed the 40mph limit if it wasnt safe to do so.

Secondly depends on the road, the likes of the A9 i know little of the 40mph being enforced so generally safe. Likes of the A1 never really see trafpol but know some of the scameras are set for HGV’s so always make sure slow down for them. A75 heavilly policed so tend to sit at 50mph which they don’t seem to mind as much.

If i was driving on a single carriageway road down south in some area i didnt know wouldnt be speeding, wouldnt take the risk.

I think all single carriageways should be 50mph for HGV’s, just like NSL for cars is 60mph even though some roads it would be unsafe to do 60mph so people don’t.

Heard a trafpol said on the A75 that most of the truck crashes involved trucks sitting at 40mph on cruise control then when it gets twistier drifting off the road because its nearly 100miles long and people loose concentration.Which is surprising since most people would jump to the conclusion it would be Irish trucks doing 65mph.

I know people like Rog will say that should never happen but advanced drivers and even association of police drivers don’t recommend cruising for long distances at unrealistically low speeds, drivers need input.

Think with the likes of speed limits and other things, some of the legislators forget its humans driving cars not robots or computers. Yeah someone shouldnt loose concentration doing 40mph but being human we are prone to errors.

Well Dazza, if I had to guess who was the PROFESSIONAL driver, out of you or ROG, The answer wouldn’t begin with D. :unamused:
There are truck drivers, and there are people who just drive trucks.
Two completely different things

I personally wouldn’t trust ANY truck driver to decide anything !! Here’s a scene you can see all day every day.

Whats actually happened here is that the container driver sat on the bumper of the car in front and bullied him out of the way. The cars where doing the 50mph limit. The limit is there (on the A14) because of the series of bends and a few staggered junctions. What do you reckon the tippers chances are of stopping if anything goes wrong ahead? Anyway, its not speeding trucks that are the danger, its cars when we do 40 mph hey?!! I’d limit trucks to be even slower.

I know people like Rog will say that should never happen but advanced drivers and even association of police drivers don’t recommend cruising for long distances at unrealistically low speeds, drivers need input.

This is a point that has been debated on the ADUK site.
A driver, in any vehicle, is more likely to stay focussed if they have to adjust speed and position often - this is human nature.
The advanced driver who practices a flowing commentary (verbally or inside the head) can overcome the falling concentration levels which may occur at constant speeds but as most drivers on the roads do not have this training, then the mind tends to wander.
There are perhaps two ways to combat this. One is to scrap all speed limits and trust the judgement of every driver out there. The other is to have compulsory post L test training which encompasses the techniques mentioned above.
They are the only two ways I can think of but I’m open to any others…

.

I would take this option - drive them to the pub in my car so they could drink what they wanted whilst I stayed non alcoholic in order to get them home safely. I could then have a good laugh at some of the drunken antics they do    embarassing them with those antics the next day is fun too :unamused:
A lot is down to the way an individual thinks - is it safety first or not  having SAFE FUN without the consequences of that upsetting anyone else has to be the ulimate goal.

And I reckon you fall into the second category my friend. I myself am a professional driver, the difference between me and Rog is that I don’t go shouting it from the rooftops. Any HGV driver who never ever speeds is a rarity.

They are probably the same drivers who have never seen a ■■■■ mag.

You’re going to need a lot more than 16 posts under your belt if you want to take me on Moth. That is unless you’re really ROG under a different username!! :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp:

Depends on whether the speeding is deliberate or are we talking about the odd drifting just over the limit and immediately putting it right
There is speeding and there is SPEEDING :exclamation:
