Read somewhere we’re allowed to overtake on 3rd lane if traffic is slower than 45 mph, is that true? Yesterday on M1 no one used the 3rd lane and traffic was horrendous on 1/2 lanes
Never heard of that.
It is OK to move into the 3rd lane on a 4 lane m-way to overtake. And here it seems OK to use the 3rd lane of a wide load is across both the first 2 lanes, But for general slow traffic? Nope.

Ok…still not convinced.
But IF that is true, never heard it before and I won’t be trying it out anytime soon.
Years back used use a 14 a lot when was dual carriageway way. Was signs no hgvs overtaking lane 2 during certain times but amount of trucks that ignored it.

That does not mean there is no 45mph exemption, I might easily have missed it. Or maybe it does not exist.
Until i see it on a .gov UK site I would err on the side of caution.

thanks all for answers. Now the real question is how many of you actually got done for using 3rd lane or what are the chances of getting done for it? Will judge let it slide if I explain to him 3rd lane was empty?
Like I said, on Saturday 3rd lane was literally empty with “mortals” hogging all other lanes, it was so frustrating. I really don’t understand why people treat 3rd lane like it’s non-existent.
