3 pedal Opticruise

Question for anyone whos driven Scanias 3 pedal Opti. Is this deemed an automatic? as Im restricted to Automatic lorrys, and have driven MAN, DAF, Mercedes all auto gearboxes dome better then others [emoji23]. But yet to drive the better two that is Volvo and Scania.

Maybe I’m wrong but my understanding is that if you had a full manual car licence and then took your HGV test in an automatic HGV then that gave you a full manual HGV licence?

As you have to use the clutch to pull away and use it again to stop, I would say that it is a manual. Probabley wrong, but why change the habit of a lifetime.

You are not wrong. I did my hgv tests in a auto and have a full licence (never had a problem with manual gearboxes either - so no big deal to me).

But he may only have had an auto car licence - or he may have some form of disability.

I thought that aswell but on the back of my licence 78.101 which is a code for restricted vechicles in the catagory in this case Cat C and Cat CE.

Its a stupid law we have over here I did my car test in a manual did the truck test in an Actros and it was an Auto but I do shunt manual trucks every morning to get in or out the yard.

Thats what I was thinking but I drive a 18tonne Daf that has a clutch “pedal” its more like a button in the floor, and has the stock like Scania does pull back to go up the gears knock back to drop down but you can shift gears with using the clutch “pedal” i only use it for crawl or backing up in manovour mode.

If you are in the ROI then possibly different rules apply, I really don’t know anything about this. However I’d suggest you just follow local tradition and “crack on”. :stuck_out_tongue:

Im. Guessing you passed your car test in an automatic

I had a stupid scania like this for a week while my daf was in for it’s mot
And hated it. Stalled it a few times…cant work out who came up with stupid clutch pedal on an auto gear box.

I haven’t a clue about Eire’s licence requirements.

On the 3 pedal opticruise, once i’d realised it was about as much use as Arsetronic in auto, not even chocolate teapot standard, and needed to be driven in MH (might have been MP) manual mode and not left to its own devices it was a superb gearbox with lightning quick and precise changes, infinitely superior to the later 2 pedal version.

The reason for MH/MP is that the changes are faster than in normal M mode.

The clutch (only needed to stop and start) pedal meant the driver retains absolute control over maneuvering.

Me neither; worst of both worlds. Had a hired Scanny 320 for 6 months, that box spoiled what was otherwise a half-decent truck. Clutch was bad enough, but that bloody stupid rev limiter made Welsh hill farms a royal PITA to get in and out of. My old Renault, and even the crappy Merc that I’m stuck with now, have no such issues.

But it’s not a manual lorry you use the clutch to pull away then don’t need it again until you come to a stop

its an automatic gearbox so its an automatic…
the 3rd pedal is for arguing the toss if as and when it suits you.
plod will see 3 pedals and argue its manual until they are corrected…( by that time you will be in front of a judge so itl be his decision) :unamused:

Depends on the quality of plod once got asked by a Miss Plod at Bamber Bridge “And how many lorries does Mr Topline own?” once her error had been pointed out she replied “Well that tells you how much I know” :open_mouth:

I’m well aware of that - which is why I queried dd999 apparently thinking it was a good idea that it looks like a manual…

I’d rather things didn’t get as far as appearing in front of a judge TBH. Waste of a day’s holiday for starters…
