robroy:
Had a near miss on the M6 last night myself (not managed part) with a Transit coming off the hard shoulder from a standing start.
Luckily for me there was nothing overtaking me. I can count on one hand how many times it has happened to me in the past, but it still scares the [zb] out of me when it does.
I might take a lesson from Winseer and sit in lane 2 all the time because of potential accidents like thisor that could be dangerous it’s lane 3 for me now
Edit. Sat in lane 3 all day, must be a good idea as LOADS of cars are following me, also lots of trucks are coming up my inside and blasting horns of approval at me and waving at me …strangely

Surely all us careful drivers would see someone on the hard shoulder - and move into lane 2 “just in case”…
Yup, I’ll admit to doing this all the time when driving at night.
The M25 RTC in the early hours on December 9th last year was initially caused by just such an act as “pulling sharply off the hard shoulder into a live lane 1”
The artic in lane one was almost on top of this offending vehicle, swereved into the overtaking artic in lane 2, and chaos resulted.

I was 400 yards behind the site on this night, coming up the hill just after the Waltham Abbey entry slip onto the clockwise carriageway.
I get very nervous indeed when some artic is slowly overtaking me, and I can see something on the hard shoulder ahead.
This is why (for those of you who have found themselves overtaking me) I just cancel the cruise for a few seconds, and drop back - letting the lane two artic get past me as quickly as possible.
I like my elbow room…
