20cm From Death

I agree ROG, when you think that a LGV has to have marker boards and lights all down the side so that it is easy to see where does this put our friends on bikes with no lights and dark clothes

ajt:
Its just a shame after being bored and trawling through the whole thread you never had a chance to actually watch the video.

Come on mate, cut the bollox, its obvious who was at fault. Mistake by the tanker driver, yeah we all make them, his fault ? of course it was…

LOL @ 48 on a bike too

I did watch the video when it was first posted, however when I went to watch it again to see if the tanker was already on the roundabout like Phil said it had been removed by the user. I am genuinely interested in the 48mph on a bike though, when I was at school we got told off by the police for speeding on bikes (downhill in a 20 zone) but he seemed more upset at how close we shot past his police car. I’m sure I remember the phrases “dangerous cycling” and “serious matter”

48 on a push bike is nigh on impossible unless its down a huge hill - keen cycling you’d be talking 15 - 25 mph

Another point worth thinking about:

Anyone stop to think what might have happend if this cyclist had had a engine between his legs, ie it being a motorbike ■■? Think we’d a been looking at a different end result dont you…

I sometimes drive the lead car for cycle races and can assure you all that 50mph is possible and achievable by fit cyclists.I have cycled at 40 mph but was never a top flight racer.

I’ve actually had a max speed of 48 mph going down Tak Ma doon in the Campsies. I’d only ever do that sort of speed on a quiet straight country road, and the fastest I go on my commute is just over 30mph.

I wear hi-viz at the moment, but won’t have that in the summer. I find in good light, road position is much more important when it comes to being seen. I don’t have flashers on the front, I have 2 200 lumens front lights with slightly different light spreads. On the back I have a flasher and a steady light.

I should add that the video has been removed on advice of the police. This is so that that case against the driver will not be prejudiced.

JoeG,

You will certainly have your version and the admin of CycleChat will have his. You have openly admitted earlier in this thread that you liked to try and wind me up (and you did this to numerous others). Therefore, I will draw my own conclusions about who was at fault in your departure from CycleChat.

surely any good lawyer the driver had (if it came to that :open_mouth: ) could argue this entire thread was prejudice against the driver :exclamation: as this is a public forum afterall

what do you want to happen to this driver ideally magnatom  up before a driver conduct hearing or see it to the bitter end and have him sacked  just curious thats all.

I don’t think many decent people want anyone to lose their job. If this was a one-off by the tanker driver in question and nothing like it ever happens again then obviously they should be allowed to continue their job. If, however this sort of thing is a regular occurrence with (presumably) him, then eventually… How is anyone else to know unless this is brought to the police’s attention? I suppose points on the licence are some indicator of standards of driving, as even though luck plays a part, eventually poor driving gets penalised. Remember the case some years ago of a trucker who ran into someone by driving down the hard shoulder? He was let off only to do it again.

I’m not a legal expert but I would have thought some of the comment on here would be prejudicial to a trial. As for posting the video I suppose that would be counted prejudicial, as even though that video is an undoubted factual piece of evidence it could influence jurors’ opinions? Not too sure about that statement but even on this, perhaps biased, forum the majority verdict is driver guilty (of being in the wrong, at least).

As for the flashing bike lights debate, one man’s distraction is another man’s attention. I think all slow moving vehicles should have “warning beacons” - such a flash seems to be accepted as a warning sign - though I would draw the line at having a rotating amber light on the head. As in Police Squad! this would get attention, and ridicule.

even if he was tried, covicted sentenced to 500 lashes with a rusty bike chain there would be grounds for appeal and a mis-trial…bound to be someone on here with some legal knowledge.

Some cyclists are beyond belief, one female I followed recently along a busy SC A road, had her arms folded and wearing earphones.

Needless to say I gave her ten foot clearance. What possesses people to be so stupid, cyclists are vulnerable enough without being totally reckless.

Go and ask Wigsie what happened then if you really want to know what did happen.
You probably wont though and will carry on thinking your right, when your wrong. But, think what you will, but id rather you kept your [zb] thoughts to yourself :unamused:

I’ve read through all the posts in this thread and I would like to say that this magnatom idiot is really annoying me you cyclists really annoy me you put yourselves in danger you pay no attention to traffic lights go in and out of traffic come up the side of wagons and ok granted in the video which i watched before it was removed I would say that the wagon driver was at fault but have you ever made a mistake misjudged something no perfect are you. I wonder if you had a number plate on the back of the vehicle how many people would of reported you to the police what are you trying to do that bloke driving that wagon could have children at home that rely on his income to eat pay the bills and everything else. Stop being such a ■■■ you wasn’t hurt its obvious the driver didnt see you its human nature that if he did he would of slammed the anchors in my opinion you are an idiot on a power trip get over it and stop ■■■■■■■■ like a flippin girl

Nice rant. I’m impressed with your ability to talk without breathing!

All i’d say is ■■■■ happens, people make mistakes. So get over it and get on with your life, seeing as you’re still alive.
