I read somewhere that all local councils can now implement their own speed limits, so small streets where there are schools, then they can reduce the speed limit to 20mph, and put in more speed humps.
Wigan Council have reduced most residential areas to 20mph. Plenty of repeater signs too. Be warned it will spread from Council to Council. I don’t mind it actually as I live in an area where it’s now 20mph. Still get plenty of idiots flying about though.
Wheel Nut:
Another great idea is used around Bulwell & Arnold Notts and it is a lifesize model of children on the pavements. You can see the brake lights flash when drivers see them.
This works in the same way that the 13’ English policeman did in Nis in the former Yugoslavia
I remember the first one I ever saw which was on St Ann’s Wells Road nr the junction with Woodborough Rd & yes, they do work.
I reckon they stuck 'em up the posh end of the Wellls Road first 'cos the scumbags down the other end would’ve nicked 'em before the cement set.

Bad news chaps! These signs are not advisory, the local councils draw up local traffic orders making the 20mph limit enforceable (when the lights flash) . So enjoy your 3 points and £60 when the police point their speed gun at you. Also how hard is it to do 20mph outside a school? Pretty common sense really
It makes sense to slow down near schools at the times when the brats are going in and coming out.My objection is when the signs are left on all of the time ,weekends and small hours of the morning.

Glad someone else knows and understands the law.
Would you care to volunteer to educate the rest of us about the differences between a voluntary & mandatory 20mph speed limit zone?
Well Chas I work as a school bus driver and the worst most selfish driving that I see comes from the yummy mummies driving their brats to school. They drive 4x4s and dont know where the corners are on it they stop and need a taxi to get to the side of the road.I think that able bodied kids should be dropped off at least half a mile from school. The walk would do some good and no harm to the rest of them.

The one I’m thinking of has an LED sign with a 20 limit on it, red circle and all.
If it says 20 when lit under such a sign then it is mandatory
Rog, If you read Chas’s answer, you see they are only advisory, maybe we should all print it off and stick it under the cops nose if you get pulled. I should say Chas first post.
Obviously it depends on which signs are there as to whether they are mandatory or advisory.I am married to a school teacher who was is heavily involved in school safety and was at meetings discussing these 20 mph limits when they first started.
Apparently the vast majority are now mandatory.
At the school where she works there have been quite a few caught speeding and all given points and a fine as well as a good friend of mine at 27mph.
Some on here maybe need to refresh their minds on simple highway code about mandatory signs!

You drive into a village into the 30 mph limit, approach a school and the sign says 20 mph when lights flashing, are these signs mandatory, and if so then you must have to do 20mph until your out of the 30mph,even if its 3 miles.whats your thoughts?
A 3 mile stretch of 20mph is a bit extreme, usually its only a few hundred yards past a school.
However-
3 miles at 30mph takes 6 minutes
3 miles at 20mph takes 9 minutes
Hardly worth risking running over a kid and going to prison for the sake of 3 minutes.
