2 Seconds or 4?

Well at 56mph,2 secs is 54.75ft or 16.7mtrs for the younger drivers.
Take away reaction distance and there`s not a lot left.

The distance figures for a 2 second gap seem to vary alot, one website quote this.

At 30 mph, a ½ second gap is 22 feet (7 metres) - about a car and a half length.
At 45 mph, a ½ second gap is 33 feet (11 metres) - a little less than a coach length.
At 55 mph, a ½ second gap is 40 feet (13 metres) - the length of the trailer of a
standard articulated lorry.

so working on there figures a 2 second gap would be 160 ft @ 55mph, 40 times 4.

I put my hands up and admit I haven’t read the whole thread - but let’s be safe here - MAKE IT 4s’ EH! after all any idiot can make a truck travel at 40-70mph but can they stop it safely■■? Ummm!

Happydaze, i’ve sifted through a few posts and tried to remove them. Incase i missed any its not acceptable to calling someone you disagree with a prick. Don’t do it anymore. Couldn’t care how upset you are. If people wanna drive to close that they are unable to stop the thats their look out. Its a choice we all make.

Was interesting to observe how a post about something which is totally personal choice descended into a slanging match between two members( ),not the first or the last no doubt, but entertaining all the same.

Rather than entertaining, I find it very worrying that some people who can’t even have a reasonable discussion without acting like spoilt children are let loose in heavy vehicles :unamused: :unamused: :unamused: .

Just to throw my thoughts into the mix
The Highway Code lists the overall stopping distance at 60mph at 73 metres, I don’t know how old this info is compared to advances in car braking, but the thinking distance is at 18m (1 artic length) last time I looked there were no such advances within the brain nor does it make any difference what your driving. Me personally I leave the distance between marker posts (100m/~5 artic lengths) from the truck in front where possible. It’s about 100 miles from J20,M1 to J40 why is it the truck I passed over an hour ago and I thought was going slow passes me whilst I’m waiting at the lights on the exit slip? Knocking on someone’s back doors isn’t going to get you to your destination any quicker unless angels & demons are your thing.

The data in the highway code for stopping distances is well out of date, it relates to a ford anglia in 1966.

Indeed it is, but the thinking distance remains the same at around 0.75 seconds. at 56 mph or 25 metres per second do you really think anyone could come to a dead stop in 2 seconds? It’s possible but it only takes a glance in the mirrors, a look down at the legs alongside, or even a glance of the speedo, and you might just start braking before you stop DEAD.

You lot can argue the toss all you want, I’ll be sticking to one marker post, I don’t want to be the one subject to ‘RIP drive’ for at least 30 years.

If you still need to count it out mate, ya need some driver training…

One for your DCPC matey…

Actually, the reason for counting it out is we all become complacent and start to get too close - I’ll hold my hands up, I’m often too close to the vehicle in front - so if you try and do a 2 second count, which leaves a massive gap and you just know someone will fill it by time you’ve counted to 2, then you’ll realise you are too close too.

Our roads are far too busy, with far too many impatient people on them, and far too many ‘expert drivers’ who will take your nose off because they ‘know how long their vehicle is and don’t need flashing in’.

You need the same DCPC course as the OP then mate…

All done ■■■■■■■■■

We all get complacent, anyone who says they don’t just doesn’t realise it, at least I know I make mistakes and rectify them, usually before it becomes a serious mistake or accident.

Actually I take regular training with a ROSPA diploma holder that trains the plod to try and stay current and sharp…I am well aware of my weaknesses ta. I am not ‘often too close to the vehicle in front’ though.

Sure ya do, and of course you’re not :unamused:

God, I wish I was as perfect as you, earning all that money that I have to stay up well into the wee hours of a bank holiday Tuesday night counting it, never getting too close to other vehicles, being ROSPA and generally just being perfect…

But, considering I don’t have accidents, am IAM, have ADR, earn money - ok, not as much as you claim, but pay the bills, and get holiday pay.

I had to do a defensive riding course in about 2003 on a motorbike before I could get insured as a courier, it pointed out so many stupid things I did it was unbelievable.

I know I’m still nowhere near perfect, but by being aware of it and making adjustments, ie on a motorway just thinking ‘what if’ and counting as a truck passes a marker may just be what’s kept me alive.

I didn’t say I was perfect. And, as I have a very good friend whos is a RoSPA trainer, that bit is free and easy…but I can honestly say that, I do not feel the need to count the two or four second rule when driving. At least, I haven’t for many years now. And I don’t have accidents either… And I used to be a motorcycle instructor myself and yes, I did teach the 2 second rule…but that was mostly to either beginners or people with limited experience. It’s a useful tool - certainly. One to be aware of - definitely …one I used to remind people of that were ‘boot inspectors’.

I have never claimed to earn huge amounts of money, that’s a bit you made up! Merely that £6.81 per hour (or similar) for C+E is ■■■■■ pay and that personally I wouldn’t work for…if peeps are happy with that sum, then fine. Just not for me.
