2 Seconds or 4?

Harry Monk:
Surely you two should take this to PM now?

No point Harry that last post was sufficient and don’t think I’ve said anything there which shouldn’t be in public.

Even 4secs is too close to another lorry, a car that you can see over, maybe, but as has been said, a lorry could hit something and stop dead a lot sooner than you thought and then you’re a statistic :open_mouth:

After the recent spate of lorry driver deaths, is a few seconds that important :bulb:

From the highway code. rule 126.

-allow at least a two-second gap between you and the vehicle in front on roads carrying faster-moving traffic and in tunnels where visibility is reduced. The gap should be at least doubled on wet roads and increased still further on icy roads.
-remember, large vehicles and motorcycles need a greater distance to stop. If driving a large vehicle in a tunnel, you should allow a four-second gap between you and the vehicle in front.

Took this pic on the M1 a few weeks ago, the gap between me and Mr Croome was just over 3 seconds(i was partialy loaded), do you think that was far enough away to react to his actions?

Harry Monk:
As a rough rule of thumb, to determine how far you travel in a second, multiply your speed by 1.5 and that gives you the distance in feet.

So at 56mph, you will travel 84 feet in one second, 168 feet in two seconds and 336 feet in four seconds.

Personally I normally leave a hundred yards or so between myself and the vehicle in front which is about four seconds.

So wouldn’t that mean i would be travelling 168 feet behind the vehicle in front, nearly 3 artic lengths with a 2 second gap?
Disclaimer, I am ■■■■ at maths lol.

In the event of a sudden stop…
Yes, but unfortunately you would probably be cleaned up by Mr Malcolm as he swerved to avoid the lorry in front.
His view of the road ahead in your picture looks to be about 30 feet and his well being is in the hands of the driver
in front.

Nick

Austria has 4 second for lorry.
It works always.De faster you drive the bigger the distance to the Vehicle in front.
By Snow also supposed Cars on 4 Second distance

Just think
90 Kilometer an Hour is
(56 mph) 90000:3600=25 Meter a second. x 4 second is 100 Meter
(50 mph) 80000:3600=22.22 Meter a sec x 4 Sec = 88.88 Meter
(40 mph) 64000:3600=17.77 Meter a sec x 4 Sec = 71 Meter
(30 mph) 50000:3600=13.88 Meter a sec x 4 Sec = 55.55 Meter

But normally in City,Town or traffic Jam you shorten the Gap to front to make Queue shorter

its variable.
at least 3 seconds for me.
it is frightening how close some people will sit on the arse end of the motor in front.

That’s similar to the case that I was trying to make. But obviously such advice is wasted on many ‘drivers’.

Problems is, if you leave a sensible gap, someone will fill it…

If it’s a ‘sensible’ gap they won’t ‘fill it’ because it’s just an empty bit of road with nothing on it in front.Which just leaves the problems of idiots who can’t keep a stable speed or idiots cutting in too soon after overtaking or idiots who can’t sort out speed differentials between them and vehicles in front,in good time, while the slower vehicle is still well ahead, leaving plenty of time to adjust speed to maintain seperation distance, check mirrors and find a decent gap in lane 2,before having to pull out to overtake.

The first of those types usually results in the situation of the overtaking car, coach,or truck going by then coming back in then backing off which then leaves the overtaken vehicle having to back off to maintain a decent anmount of seperation and then having to overtake the idiot who’s just overtaken or vice versa in the case of it being the overtaken vehicle being the one that speeds up just after being overtaken. In all such cases those drivers are absolute zb muppets that are an accident waiting to happen. :imp:

MADBAZ:
Just to throw my thoughts into the mix
The Highway Code lists the overall stopping distance at 60mph at 73 metres, I don’t know how old this info is compared to advances in car braking, but the thinking distance is at 18m (1 artic length) last time I looked there were no such advances within the brain nor does it make any difference what your driving. Me personally I leave the distance between marker posts (100m/~5 artic lengths) from the truck in front where possible. It’s about 100 miles from J20,M1 to J40 why is it the truck I passed over an hour ago and I thought was going slow passes me whilst I’m waiting at the lights on the exit slip? Knocking on someone’s back doors isn’t going to get you to your destination any quicker unless angels & demons are your thing.

The data in the highway code for stopping distances is well out of date, it relates to a ford anglia in 1966.

Very much doubt it, i would of seen it coming long before he did, and i had already backed off any way, I dont like driving along side brain dead drivers.

Yes, sorry, my comment was not meant to criticize you, rather the Malcolm’s driver who is ridiculously close to the lorry in front.
