Good question. Let’s allocate the first £250k to an educational campaign aimed at potential truck/lorry drivers and the general public as well with the goal of explaining the difference, namely that there is none and also while we’re at it, settle the question of class 2 vs. cat C and class 1 vs. cat C+E to reduce the jargon bloat and encourage youngsters to spend £3000+ to earn up to £1.60 above min. wage with 0 potential earnings in the driving industry for the first six months since their license acquisition because hey, insurance premium costs >>>>> getting new drivers on board.
Another think tank brainwave to waste tax payers money.
Ex offenders will also have high insurance premiums.

Great so now the level of a truck driver or whatever we are called is that of a ■■■ offender, terrorist or some other low life & to rub salt into the wound after they have raped a child they get rewarded with a free Hgv license & they wonder why the job is so poor, no doubt when the regular drivers find out they are working with a pedo & refuse to help or just blank him they will get disciplined & re-educated.

Block all third party cookies, and then adopt an “always say no” to such requests.
Each and every haulier in the country - should use 1m EACH YARD to boost hourly rates by about £5ph - and then KEEP them there for a long time, which would gradually encourage youngsters to think “Hey, if I get a LGV licence - I can get £20ph straight out of the gate!”
Pay the decent wages - and the new drivers will self-train and come…
The UK government has just launched a £1m ($1.2m) fund to help boost recruitment in the haulage industry in a bid to tackle the nationwide shortage of lorry drivers, also known as truckers.
Almost 1.5 million people work in the industry. Government figures show that while employment in the transport and logistics sector has risen since 2010, there has been a recent fall in numbers.
The money from the Department of Transport will help fund the Road to Logistics programme which aims to support those who may find it difficult to get permanent jobs — such as ex-offenders. The investment will also allow logistics companies to train these groups of people, including within the prison system.
There was a successful trial of the programme at HM Prison Sudbury, where the shceme helped train up 300 drivers in the first year. The plan also will see prisoners linked with potential employers, undergo training, gain qualifications, a driving licence, and ultimately a guaranteed job on release.
“Our dynamic road transport sector moves more than 1.4 billion tonnes of goods across the country every year, so we need to make sure it is fit for the future,” said Transport Secretary Grant Shapps.
“Not only will this new programme help make this industry even stronger, but it will help pave the way for those who may be struggling to secure a permanent job and turn their lives around.”
Veterans and the long-term unemployed will also be targeted in the recruitment drive.

Its an American site, hence the $$$ when they quote the figure.
I don’t see this working, it didn’t work when they started giving free tests and training for those on long term job seekers and we already have the rehabilitation of offenders act. If I were an employer, I’d be wary of certain individuals coming from these schemes after all, your drivers are the face of your firm, on the road every day. There are some that I wouldn’t just to run a bath let alone drive an HGV.

but but they have driver facing cameras, which apparently are the answer to everything wrong in the industry currently 
Something that has to be admired is the choice of words. Criminals serving time now became “ex-offenders within the prison system” but all in all it looks like a great idea!
Get the exact load of people that showed no compliance with the most basic laws to live within this society, while they are still being kept away from the wider society, all the legal requirements needed for being in charge of 44 tons of material, as soon as they finish their “re-education”.
Veterans and long term unemployed, with a clear criminal background should be the only ones considered for such a scheme.
This sort of policies show us, the inmates are running the asylum
A lot of folk on here surprised that a ex convict with no qualifications and who’s been a drain on society, can just in a matter of a couple of week, be the upstanding member of society many on here claim to be.
Got to love those who bleat on about it being a profession.
In reality it’s just a job what anyone can do.
