just tell the little runt he’s on “reefers”. he’ll be fine.
“yer, right, top one, sorted, an dat, innit”
“smoke da reefer”.

eeemmm excuse me, have i called you any names? and i am not a druggy i have worked very hard to get to where i am today and why does every body have this view that all teenagers with a license fly round a housing estate with crap music blasting out and writing off cars. i am nothing like that i have never written off a car, got 0 points on my license and don’t blast music out whilst driving round in a crap little saxo that looks like it has driven into halfords.

well i screamed around with music blairing out when i was a lad, so i’m talking from experience. and more smoke came out of the inside of the car than the exhaust.
i didn’t mean to offend anyone, but you must admit, there are a lot of boy racer pot heads about. and that is of course not all teenagers, but they are the loudest, so they get noticed.

i agree with you on that i actually know 2 people who are 18-19 and take drugs but they are thicker then a railway sleeper and even by some miricle they do pass and get a license to drive a truck they would not last 5 mins because they have not got enough strength to do anything even just driving the truck would be a huge challenge for them and boy racers if you think about it they would prob get sick of driving after a few days because they are use to 5 min blasts round housing estates and schools but if you stick them in a truck that is limited to 56mph - 65mph they would go mental and sitting there for hours or even days with a few breaks every couple of hours, if you said that to a boy racer that to him would be his idea of living hell. i can’t do boy racing in my vehicles, they ain’t the right ones.

well i hope you now realise it wasn’t intended to you personally, it was just a laugh.
what would the lads you know think of if you mentioned you were on reefers every day at work?

imagine a truck going down the motorway with white smoke pouring out of the cab windows

Well I’ve just had my first dealing with an under 21.

If even half of “them” are half as well-mannered and clearly capable as he was it will be a welcome breath of fresh air from the hero macho-men that can, and do claim the title of “Professional Driver”

Sounds like music to my ears, After trying to find a mechanical engineering apprenticeship and not having any luck, and also trying to get into college with 11 GCSE’s all A-C and still having no luck.

Been driving on the farm since i was 11 i think i should be entitled to a job if i put my full experience and knowlege towards it. Ive gotta start somewhere.

Would anyone employ me?

no more than any other newbie IMO unless you also had say, experience of farming if the LGV job on offer was a farming related LGV job - that may give you an edge

So even if i had a reference from the farm owner saying that i have been using a tractor and trailer for years would that also be any help?

Doubtful - most are looking to see for how long you have had normal on road driving of large vehicles
Bus/coach drivers can usually get away with ‘X years of experience in driving large vehicles’ when they apply for C jobs

Ok thanks ROG,

I guess ill just have to wait another year till im 18 and finished school.

When you are 18 and if you still want to become a trucker then go for it BUT get your college qualifications so that you have other options to fall back on

AGREED, mate of mine left school joined the army 3 years later got medically discharged and has nothing to fall back on he’s 21 and spends his days on the playstation.

Agreed again,im going to do mechanics at college first.

I just wonder where the extra influx of budding truckers are gonna get a job, with so many people looking for work wheres the job shortage?

Perhaps by getting 18 year olds behind the wheel of a truck they can learn a bit of respect for the road and road users early so we have less numptys on the road who drive like idiots around trucks because they’ll know what a 40 ton motor is capable of

Personally I don’t think it comes down to age but attitude.
We have a 3.5 tonne van at work it’s driven by anybody who needs to use it, I’m the unfortunate [zb] who tries to keep it in good order and capable of getting to Italy and back when needed.

It gets trashed, dinged and dented because most of the driver who are well over the age of 25 drive it like a sports car, they come back from long trips boasting of how they got it to reach a ton or how it only taken then x number of hours to get from Chassis makers in Italy or Engine makers in France. (no wonder the engine now leaks oil, or it’s gone through yet another set of tyres) This doesn’t impress me. What does impress me is the lad who normally drives it, he’s only 20 years old and has been driving it for the last 2 years. It’s a pleasure to be a passenger with him behind the wheel. smooth easy driving and respect that it not a performance car, but a van and he doesn’t care what top speed it can do just that he’ll get the job done and van back in one piece.

He’s going for his HGV’s soon and I’m sure with his attitude he’ll be a good driver and better than many older than him.

18 year olds, will have the same difficulties as 21 year olds in getting a job after passing, but with a lot of drive and patenice, they will get a job and then the experience comes after like all of us. So good luck to them, it’s a hard profession what ever age or ■■■ you are and we should encourage all new drivers with respect and give as much help and encouragement as we all had or would of liked!

another point, Mechanics!

If your going to do mechanics, learn on trucks instead of cars! a truck mehcanic can work on both car and truck, But a car mechanic can only ever work on cars. Gives you more choice when your odler and fed up of driving!

Hi. Im a newbie to the site and this is my first post… I knew this would be an issue and i personally think the age should have stayed at 21. I’m 18 and a class 2 driver, sitting my class 1 in four months. Im in the young drivers apprenticeship scheme. This means i have had a stricter test than most, having to demonstrate skills in loading, mapping, pre start checks and basic vehicle control before i was allowed on the road. These exercises were all recorded on video and sent to a board of high classed people. I passed my test third time, with previous failures being pushing into a roundabout, and putting front nearside wheel on the kerb.

As for the hours, I drive a JCB 722, my basic week is 50 hours, usually ending up nearer 60. The 722 has also given me control over a larger vehicle. I would like to drive our company tipper, but lack of work is stopping me.

I would like to get into shunting work, but as no one is employing that option is out the window. I’v looked at into being an owner driver, the financial side of things would be sorted. the biggest thing stopping me is the risk, iv been guaranteed work for a year but ideally if it was two it would be better.

So at the present time I’m a dumper driver through the week doing shunting work and odd runs for a local firm.

I expect a few bad comments, and of course a few good. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Im in the young drivers apprenticeship scheme

Is this the NVT scheme as the YDS (Young drivers Scheme) was abolished in March this year

Forum with some useful stuff and Forum for questions on drivers hours

im 20 just now and have served 2 years as a mechanic & almost 3 years. now all of us are boy racers & alot of us have a genuine interest in the industry, right now im trying to find someone who will let me out on the vans and trying to get the money together for my class 2. so dont tar us all with the same brush

Most 18 yr olds fall asleep at a drop of a hat…whats it going to be like doin a 4 hr punch?

Hmmmm…im thinking of getting into the recovery game!

I’m loving the stereotyping and ageism. Most old folk have heart attacks, good luck with that. As it stands now, i am driving longer in a day than regulated driving hours.

Rog, I think its the Young Drivers Scheme I’m on, i signed up last november, although you may be right, i have never heard of the NVT… Surely with any 18 year old being able to drive, the funded scheme’s will be abolished anyway.

There should of been a poll with this thread. “Are you jealous of younger driver’s getting opportunities you never had?” or maybe “Are you scared younger drivers will get your job?”
