So, I pulled my card at 1700 and my reload going back north is collect 1pm. 18hrs off as I’ll try going in early for it.
Question is, how many of you lot paid from card in to card out would sit around unpaid for 18, or would you add a few hours waiting time to your timesheet. Or head to collect very early , although I been here before and when they say it won’t be ready till X, well it won’t be ready.
I’m pretty sure tomorrow will just be running back to Manchester with the load as it’s tipping Friday Am, so I’m only looking at about a 6 HR day tops tomorrow , bloody rubbish. Wouldn’t mind as much if I was still adding 10-12 hrs to my timesheet.
Is this normal in general haulage, as I am still wet behind the ears.
It’s difficult , as it’s a small family firm (I’m talking 3 rigids and 2 artics) who’ve always looked after us all well, pay above average for class 2 in my area, one driver telling them to stick the load means the firm probably ain’t making profit that day.
I’m always told that when 1 truck is sat still for the week, say one of us is on holiday, the firm does well to break even .
Same with when there’s no work booked in, and I’m on POA at home waiting for the call to start, I know I should clock this as POA and as such be paid, but the company wouldn’t pay.
When I was last on hourly pay our start time on the time sheet was our contracted start time hours (6am) even if the load was not ready until 10am. If you are staying away you are still ‘available’ for work it’s their problem what work they give you.
I wouldn’t listen too much about the companies ‘hardship’ if they have been running enough years with even a small number of trucks they are making enough money to pay you from a reasonable start time even if you are sleeping waiting for a load.
Whilst I think your concern for a small operation is admirable, their profits aren’t your concern. It’s your duty to do a good job for yourself, and/or your family, and your employer.
It’s easy to over-think things in our job, God knows, I’ve done enough of it myself.
I’ve learned it’s easier to let others do their jobs, ours can be difficult enough as it is, and there’s nobody else that we can hand it over to for an hour whilst we do something different. If you’re in an office or a workshop or whatever, you can always ask Bert to give you a hand.
We, on the other hand, are faced with constant change and huge responsibility. When Mr HGV Hater pulls out in front of you, you can’t ask them to bear with you whilst you ask for advice.
You need your grey matter to be sharp and as undistracted as possible, that means the job at hand.
Sorry for going on, just want us all to be safe out there!

As a one off I guess I’d not complain. Long as you get 8 hours pay for tomorrow. If you do leas than 8 hours.
Plus I’d be very surprised if they don’t ring you in morning and find you something else to.do.
It is a one off really, had long layovers but never this long . He’s told me he will be looking for a local but they don’t take chances at my firm, can’t afford to let their client down by daring to be late for a timed collection … so it would literally have to be Bedford to Milton Keynes…
I won’t be paid 8 hrs if I work under, I’m contracted to 50/wk and get paid 50 regardless. Usually always run over though and get overtime . Guess this will help keep me under the overtime threshold for them.

I’d have 11 off and put my card in, show time for my checks then rest it for the remaining hours.
Why should you lose out by sitting away from home until they need you?
+1
Same here, that’s exactly what I would do and have done before now.
Maybe not rest it, but on other work.
You are available for work, it aint your fault that it’s either crap planning or other circumstances which are out of your remit or control.
By you sitting waiting unpaid all that time, all you are doing is subsidising the job rate…not your department as a driver.
Also if you book on after 11 off it will stop them expecting you working for 15 hours after you have sat with your thumb up your arse waiting for 12 noon to tick over.
If it was a good firm they would make some prior agreement to pay you out anyway, if they are not and they haven’t, I wouldn’t bother my arse about them mate…just book on after 11 off.
Surely, your on a wind up ■■ … If you are working for a company who are struggling to get work in and break even don’t be surprised if your job stops … after the 11 rest bang in the card. But you claim your paid 50 hours a week how many hours have you work thus far… no wonder your job is on a race to the bottom.
if it were me,then my card would go in maximum 5 mins before the wheels turn.
do your shift, and take it up with them on friday when your finished.
if they play the game and cover you a bit, then fairs fair.
if they dont, then dont be doing it again.
theres no rule says you have to start your card 11 hours after taking it out.
your working for someone you can ask face to face, not some ■■■■ in tescos traffic office or agency, just be flexible and ask them to be reasonable.if they take the hand off of you then at least that way you will still have a job on monday to be in a better position to be getting another one.
you can have a good night as best as you can tonight,a good lie in the morn, poodle about for a breakfast, then come on here for 2 hours and type pish like the rest of us…theres worse ways to spend 18 hours.

Tell you what pal here’s what we’ll do.
Just leave me to worry about my job, you just look after your own.

Your job is not to worry about their profit margin, though it’s kind of you to do so. Your standing will impact the bottom line, but your job is to drive and theirs is to get the best out of the assets.
I’ve got two tipping in Sicily this afternoon, their 're-load is Monday afternoon. They are guaranteed 12 hours a day abroad. So the customer can either find someone else to reload or the cost of their ‘holiday’ is added to the price.
In your scenario at our place, they’d be getting paid from 08.00 and we are a bit bigger than your place, but still a small family firm.
IF you was stood in your yard waiting for a load you would normally get paid when you got there not when your load was ready, for me the same applies out on the road.
The thing is, if I’d of been back at yard last night and was told to go home and have 18 off as my load wouldn’t be ready till whenever, there’d be no issue … nothing on my contract states 11 hrs off and then assume hourly pay from that point… there’s no fixed start time as i assume is case with most general haulage
So the issue is I’m expected to have the 18 off away from home , I’ve decided to play ball as a one off and have a word face to face back at yard.
I was expecting to be blasted for whineing over it and told to crack on with it by you lot, seems most think it’s unreasonable , wonder what the gaffer thinks

I agree I think this is what annoys me more than the length of the layover. If my card was in and I’d driven an hour or whatever, then had an 12 hr wait for a load… their paying me regardless.

I’ve a strange image of a horses head being left on the customers pillow if they don’t pay the extra cost
Delegate,Tell them if they ain’t willing to pay you after your 11 hours off you are quite happy to drive home have 11 hours off at home then drive back…
