When I was night trunking to Heathrow and back, sometimes I’d be leaving Heathrow with 4hrs to get back to Manchester at the end of my 15hr shift, this meant I couldn’t stop for a ■■■■ or a coffee or a power nap.
I know we need regulations because companies WILL take the ■■■■, but it should be more forgivable for drivers to extend / break the rules now and then, especially at the end of the week to get home
But the rules already allow you to extend your shift to 15 hrs 3 times between weekly rests and extend your driving to 10 hrs twice, what do you want now? extend the week to eight days? extend a day to 30 hrs?
Just that after travelling from Manchester, around Heathrow, delayed at Horse-shoe, then running back on the limiter, it’d be nice to stop for a 15min power nap and a ■■■■ without worrying too much.
Doesn’t affect me anymore, the job was killing me, so now I don’t do nights.
Maybe it was killing you because a 15 hour shift isn’t exactly a ‘night trunk’.That post says everything about the point that I’ve been making.
15 hr shifts are part of the job if you dont like it go and work in ASDA or something CF and stop bloody moaning here
I haven’t been moaning about anything I’ve just been making a point about the risks of mixing 15 hour shifts with driving that’s all and it wasn’t me who gave up a job on nights because the job was ‘killing me’ .Not surprising considering that 15 hours would turn a night shift into part of a day one too.
No, that was me. And quite literally, long blinks at wheel, heading for a motorway bridge, quit nights. Sorry if I’m too soft for your liking ■■■■■■■■■
I do 15hr days regular, it’s completely different.

What the zb is ‘different’ about having to drive the last 4 hours or more of a 15 hour ‘day’ shift than driving than having to drive that same last 4 hours or more of a 15 hour ‘night’ shift . They are as bad as each other and there’s no way of differentiating a 15 hour ‘night’ shift from a 15 hour ‘day’ shift.Because 15 hours of a 24 hour day covers both one way or another.
So you’re saying that it’s less tiring to drive the last 4 hours + of a 15 hour shift just because it started in the morning than the same 4 hours + of a 15 hour shift just because it started in the evening . That sounds like the same stupid logic used by the zb stupid eu officials who seem to make the hours regs up as they go along.

i’ve done nights and days and i can tell you nights was the worse, and i think it is possible that you don’t get as good sleep during the day than at night, tramp now and 3x15’s in a row are a doodel, do it everyweek and its never been a problem for me, but then i am contented with life got no worries and sleep like a baby ever night even parked in a layby beside a busy road, any way off to meditate for and hour now hhhuuuuummmmm

The issues of getting disturbed while sleeping during the day doing night shifts is a seperate one from the type of risks which apply in regard to differentiating between driving time and other work etc time over the course of a 15 hour shift.
A 15 hour shift in which all driving duties have to be completed within the existing driving time limits, which would have applied,I could (just about) understand. However the idea of saying that a driver can’t drive for more than 9-10 hours in a day but can drive during the last 4 hours + of a 15 hour shift is just plain stupid.
Regardless of the day v night shift issues the fact is that it would arguably be less of a risk to increase the max daily driving time to 10-11 hours instead of 9-10 while cutting the overall day from 15 hours to 11-12 hours and if too many hours of that overall day get used up doing ‘other work’ instead of driving then it’s a case of tough it’s wrong to expect to get that time back by just increasing the overall day to 15 hours.
However as I’ve said that idea, together with an increase in speed limiters to 65 mph, would probably make more winners than losers and the time gained with the extra speeds and driving periods would probably more than make up for time lost in cutting the overall 15 hour day.
God are you still going? Still as confused as ever I see. Poor feeble Carryfast, if you’d have put as much effort in to your driving career as you do these posts you may have actually done some interesting work.
And I still can’t believe your going for the increase in driving but decrease in working day. You’d know if you had much experience to speak of that often when you sit around for 2/3/4 hours during day you do just that, sit around. I have a nap, or study, or read, or watch a DVD. Hardly hard work is it. With your plan no one would ever hit max driving hours as it’d be pretty much impossible. One hour to fit daily checks, break, loading, fuelling. Go out and get a proper job and come back when you’ve some idea what your talking about. The rushing round in your day sounds exhausting. Can you imagine how stressful it’d be trying to get everything done?

the idea would be great if you were the only truck on the road, but it just can’t be done, waiting to get loaded, delays in traffic and then waiting to get tipped. all trucks on the road have to earn x amount per day/ per week. unless you can get haulage rates to over 3 times their current rates it would not be viable to even start it up. then who’s going to pay for the increase and less productivity all of us, as someone said in an earlier post a can of beens would cost you £3 at that rate, so then wages would have to rise to cover the extra coat of everything you ever wanted to buy, and the whole system would just spiral out of control, if you think things are bad now, believe me it would make the current cliamate look like a sunny day, because anarchy would rein every truck that was left on the road would be an open target for hi- jacking as people would be starving not being able to buy food.

My boss thinks this is perfectly normal. But when you fall out of the drivers seat after 11 hours you think you have been in it for about 30.

I think you’re missing the point that it should be a sensible overall day regardless of the different types of work done and that maximum permitted driving (or overall day) hours aren’t a target.Which obviously means that the more ‘other work’ etc involved during the day means less driving for that day. While the maximum permitted driving hours are just that. They don’t mean drive up to the last minute of those available hours and then park up.
However just because a driver ‘might’ need to sit around watching tele, reading etc etc for a large part of the day/night while not driving, won’t make any difference to the risk involved in the case of driving during last 4 hours + of a 15 hour shift regardless of what made up that shift.
As I’ve said I’ve worked on general haulage using similar ideas regarding hours (with the exception of the extended driving time idea) to those which I’m saying just by having the bottle to tell the guvnor that’s how it’s going to be if I’m doing the job.It was a lot less ‘exhausting’ than doing it his way of trying to get more than a day’s work done in a day.
