1200 jobs to go at TATA Steel

Just been on the radio that 1200 jobs are to go at TATA steelworks in Scunthorpe and Lanarkshire. After Redcar and now this I can see many more going in the coming months.
Things are looking very bleak for British steel production.

Another trade farmed out to a cheaper that can do it cheaper, same as all the pottery industry going from Stoke on Trent, shipped out to india.

having spent many an unpaid hour in Scunthorpe it really doesn’t surprise me, not even thinking about the cheaper imports.

Scunthorpe at least has the advantage of both blast furnaces to produce the steel and a very large complex turning it into products, unlike Redcar which I think only produced it. I suppose in theory they could buy it in from India although that would likely be complicated as they’d need to reheat it somehow.

I’ve worked at the Scunthorpe site many a time (just come off 2 week shift) and I am amazed the place makes any money - not because of the lack of demand, but the maintenance bill. Any profit it makes must be outstripped by fixing the aging machinery and asbestos removals so no wonder they are having to lay people off…well, not “having to” but it keeps the profits looking good.

Delivered twice to Scunny. According to a manager I spoke too, only half the site is actually operational, the rest of it is just in a state of disrepair with no hope of actually sorting it out. They had plenty going on but the place looks like its out of a nuclear disaster movie.

Heard on the radio though that Steeling making in Newport is starting up again. The government have been told they need to get involved before all steel making stops in this country.

Everything is made of plastic these days. You can bet your pension that SSI and TATA haven’t laid anyone off back in their native lands

It seems obvious that the country is being subjected to a programme of de industrialisation as part of a deliberate planned shift to take advantage of the cheapest labour costs possible. In addition to mass immigration for the same reasons regards what sectors of economic activety we’ve got left.

As a foreign company, buy the run down under invested (like most former nationalised industries as an example) competition, cheap, close it down, cheap.
Perfect business sense.
Produce the same amount abroad, cheaper, including shipping the ■■■■ halfway around the world and incurred taxes, still cheaper.
Gas and electricity are the same, even public transport, all are either wholly owned or a huge percentage are foreign investments right up to our nuclear power, of whom we have just invited China to the party.
Makes you think, I am no expert but where does the nuclear technology and hardware come from for our nuclear deterrent?

Worrying times when you invite so many people to your free party

It is history biting us in the bum, we pioneered the takeover strategy to win trade from the Portuguese and the Dutch via the East India Company (yes private company subsidised by the Crown) in the 1600’s.
This eventually sparked our industrial revolution, and so forth.
After the Wars commercialism had a grip, but essential services where protected under nationalisation.
We had a period of unease in the 70’s and the majority of Europe kept their essential services protected (many do to this day).
We (government/voters? ) made ours public in the 80’s…now we are paying the price.
In my view we are left with uncertainty, and definitely NOT security

From what i heard in Scunthorpe yesterday its looking like Dalzell and Clydebridge works will definately close (400jobs) and there will be some losses in the plate mill and one of the coke ovens at Scunthorpe, the feeling i got yesterday is that Tata are jumping on the Ssi Redcar bandwagon and putting forward a “worst case scenario” to try and prompt the government into giving them some sort of relief/benefit and when the government realise this and do something the losses will be nowhere near the 1200 stated, i hope this turns out to be the case

Bail out the bankers but ■■■■ the industry.
All I am hearing on the radio is “Northern Powerhouse” which the government is quoting all the time, hoorah a powerhouse of call centres, service industry and food outlets … oh and a plethora of £1 shops … I love the Britain that my kid is having to look forward to growing up in …

Iceland solved that Problem.

That’s what they will do if we leave the EU.

Unfortunately that place only has a total workforce of 150: bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-sout … s-34538681

Still they believe the market is good to start again whilst the others think its going to ■■■■.

When will this country wake up and kick out the whole corrupt global free market system. :imp:

Why.Bearing in mind that they would actually benefit from the so called trade war being used as scare tactics by the in campaign.Or are you really suggesting that Jaguar sells more cars in the EU than BMW,Audi and Mercedes sell here. :unamused:

Nothing to do with that at all. There’s been a massive worldwide slump due to massive drop in demand from China. 5 years ago scrap dealers used to buy cars from auctions because their scrap value was worth more than they were being sold for due to the demand for steel from China. That ended a couple of years ago.

If the demand isn’t there nobody will buy it no matter how cheap you make it.

I’m sure I read somewhere a while back that the Scottish government came in for some flack for sourcing the steel for the new Forth crossing from foreign countries. The said that when the tender was put out, not one UK supplier put in a bid so they had no option but to import it. Obviously these steel companies have no intention of staying in the UK if they aren’t interested in work when it comes their way.
