This sums up the idiocy of modern day car ownership … people paying £40,000 and more for a cars brimming with some of the most sophisticated electronic wizardry currently available, but it can’t tell you your speed correctly, sums it all up really. Car entertainment systems that can Skype, Facebook, Email, DVDs, Bluetooth, Climate Control, its just amazing … but wait, it can’t tell you with any accuracy how fast its going … Jeez, you can’t make this sort of stuff up.
I’d doubt if tyre technology could provide a + or - 1 mph tolerance in gearing levels at the circumference of the tyre. What can be/is done is to make a speedometer reading and calibration which over reads sufficiently to cater for that.So yes you can have your strictly applied 40 mph motorway limit.
I bet they could if they really tried. I’m sure some system where GPS readings on straight sections could continually calibrate the wheel driven speedo.
pretending your car is going faster than it is, is yet another misrepresentation from the car companies, , my wifes car also tells us we are getting many more mpg than we do, and it has a VW engine that apparently is pumping out far more pollution than we were led to believe.
But getting back on subject, may be we should be asking car dealerships how accurate the speedometer is. At the end of the day it is up to the driver not to speed, how he achieves that is not up to the rest of society.
On a personal level, I’d be all for it. Practically I don’t think it could be done because of the technical reasons mentioned in previous posts.
But seriously if you are caught speeding on that variable speed section of the M1, you are without doubt, terminally stupid.
There was a chap who rung up 5 live today, he was adamant that he shouldn’t have been caught speeding at 53 in a 50. “I always have my cruise control set at 57, it should be 10%+2” I was crying with laughter.

The issue in this case being the definition of speeding that’s based on a political agenda of revenue raising and trying to reduce the attraction of road vehicle use.On that note if that’s what people wanted then they’d all vote for the Socialists/Greens.
As opposed to being conned by a bunch of anti car/truck pro rail scammers masquerading as so called Conservatives.
ajt:
That’s why the standard of in this country has nose dived, because the powers that be are obsessed with speed and just ignore everything else
Ironically it’s probably fair to say that we’ve got a politically driven lower speed agenda that has nothing to do with safety that’s also creating dumber drivers as a knock on effect.

A little while ago there was some woman on a phone in (possibly 5 live) she was bemoaning speed cameras, apparently she had been caught by the same one, THREE times (yes the very same camera near blubberhouses), she said “if I get caught again I will loose both my licence and my job”… I wonder if the penny dropped what was actually happening or she did indeed get caught again and loose her job.

sounds like an empty head, typical muppet, i have never been done for speeding by a camera, i’ve had the 2nd but not final flash from the no so prominent mr gatso a few times, only been done once for speeding followed by motorway plod in a flange rover , i was lucky that it was night time traffic was light and road was dry , plus he did say that my driving although fast was safe, he clocked me at 90+mph but wrote 85 on the ticket, there again i didn’t give any excuses

If someone is so ■■■■■■■ stupid as to get caught by the SAME camera, then they probably shouldnt be driving in the first place. Rather than worrying about losing her license if caught again, she should worry more about the fact she cant seem to remember not to speed past a camera she knows is there!

I vote for Darwinism!
My agency told me he placed a Van driver with a firm for 11 days, and allegedly he got 11 tickets come through for the same camera!
Yes backflow, Agency!!!
1, If they were serious about the dangers of speeding just put average cameras everywhere.
2, This will cause chaos, drivers will drive below the speed limit to ensure they don’t get caught and with uncalibrated speedos this is going to drop journey times further.
3, Legally I really don’t think a court would enforce this there has to be some leeway to any limit to allow for discrepancies, it’s little known but even if you are stupid enough to drink drive there is a tolerance above the legal limit where you will not be prosecuted.
4, what are they going to do with the sheer amount of drivers receiving bans for speeding because of exceeding points? The lower the tolerance the more chance of being caught and loss of license.
5, Was it not last year the Government were pushing for an 80 mph speed limit of motorways?
ajt:
If Bedfordshire police want to raise some money how about take a pay cut instead…
Easy targets and revenue, that’s all speed cameras are about.
Target middle lane hoggers, that would make more than a million a year!
and another million from tailgaters !
I am quite surprised at the low expectations on how much would be raised. the article states that it could raise £1million at a £100 a pop that is 10,000 drivers. The traffic flow for the M1 near luton is 155,000 per day or 57m per annum. So are they really just expecting to catch one vehicle out of every 5,700 (1:5700) seems very low ?
even if the camera was just picking out 1 in a 100, at £100 a pop that would raise £57m … seriously I would blanket the country with them and fund the NHS.
Bluey Circles:
I like taxation that I don’t have to pay, speeding is optional, bring it on, treble the fines and hide the cameras. May be even remove the penalty point system so we can milk the clowns for as much as possible.
Do bear in mind you’re going to have to share the road with said clowns who will be unable to judge the speed, unable to choose lanes correctly and unable to let people who can drive correctly get on with the job of doing so.
Its a disaster for anyone who actually wants to use roads, 50mph limits are already a nightmare because no one can work out how fast 50 is, or work out how an average speed camera works, or can get out of the way when they have traffic wanting to go faster behind them. Imagine that but with higher speeds and more panic but no additional skill.
Bluey Circles:
No need to lock them up, if they don’t pay timeously, simply take the cars from them and crush them, make them watch, the message will soon get through.
Do you have your own road network? Because your ideas sound like fantasy for anyone wanting to share one.

The regs pre-date modern car ownership by quite some years and are designed to accommodate drive train discrepancies and build in some margin for being legal while you think you are.
Nothing to do with the design of the car. The design of the driver playing with all that unnecessary claptrap though…
The police could have saved a few quid by not bothering to turn up at Westminster last night. How much did it cost to put that many yellow jackets on the beat there?
It would be nice if the police could say:-
“The Tories shafted us as much as the rest of the public. Those protestors seem to be heading towards Downing street… We’ve been ordered to stop them no holds barred by Downing street itself… I say we all go down the pub, and to Downing street?- F— 'em.”
