Got a b0ll1cking today for 1 minute. Ten minutes from yard didn’t have enough time to drop trailer and fuel before I needed a 30min break. Very annoying so I stopped up the road. Watched tacho until 30 clicked over then set off. Tacho only recorded 29mins.
Had someone tell me the errors of my way and how I should wait 2mins before setting off. Does it really matter in the scheme of things.

If the tacho clicked over to 30 then it recorded 30.
Your guy telling you to wait 2 minutes is talking bull[zb]

I hope you realise how dangerous not having a full break can be, I think you lucky there weren’t any Nuns with kittens close by or there could have been a terrible disaster all down to you and your reckless disregard of the law.
Only kidding one minute in the great scheme of things, (I assume you don’t make a habit of it) should mean no more than a quick word from whoever checks your card, just recommending you give it an extra minute just to make sure, end of conversation.
I assume the person bollocking you has never actually driven a truck, but just done a course where they’ve been told that any infringement of the regs should be treated as a major crime.
You should take the break time from the tachograph display where it shows how long the current break has been, if the tachograph display says you’ve had 30 minutes that’s what will be recorded, if you calculate the break length from the display clock it can go wrong.
I don’t know how it works nowadays but on analogue we were told to always allow an extra minute before setting off because it may not have recorded the start of break time dead on the mark so the break could actually be several seconds short? I’m guessing digital tachos are more accurate though?

I don’t doubt it was the tacho display but what function on the display? The chronological time or the break time elapsed? The tacho head will record the function that most of the minute was spent doing so you could well have stopped with the time showing 10:00 and changed the function to break. If you stopped late in the minute then the change of function to break would not start recording untill a new minute starts. If you then moved off when the time showed 10:30 then your function will only show 29 whole minutes of break.

Yes, but from which part of the display? If you are simply looking at the “time of day” displayed (e.g. switch to break at 13:00 and start driving again at 13:30) then you will indeed experience problems just as you describe if you’re not careful. If instead you use the menu/down button you can get the tacho to show you how much Break time has been recorded. When that figure clicks over to 30 minutes, you are good to go.

On a VDO tachograph, as has been said press the down arrow when stationary and you’ll see the screen bellow, the part of the tachograph display you need to check is the one ringed, whatever is shown there is what will be recorded for the current break.
The top right is the accumulated break and the bottom right (ringed in red) is the length so far of the current break.
Oooh did you have to sign an infringement report too?
“Yes sir, yes sir, understood sir”… then exit the room and forget about it. DVSA aren’t going to give a rats ■■■ about you going one minute over or being one minute short, your office are only concerned about their stat sheet.

Your right that is the problem all this new stuff it only takes people to be so so up ■■■■■ about it to start a few others ■■■■■■ in there pants its a load of crap and i for one would not be worried about even going a lot more over it just do the job or just always be a plonker as trotter would say
Did it myself , 30 on tachometer to be told to give it a few extra minutes. It reads full minutes so 30/45 or 15 should read 31,46 or 16 that way you’re getting a full break of 30,45 or 15.
I’m sitting in a little industrial estate just off the A47, after going 2 minutes over. ■■■ m6 was shut, and diversion sent me all over, night trunking, so all laybys full! Dived off as soon as I could after my 15 minute warning, but still went 2 over.
Cross with myself.
when I got done at Carlisle I was told the to have 9 hrs 1 min daily rest minimum by vosa chap ( not sure how he thought id could do different with truck imobilised) , in the event I had 13 hrs , but they definitely said + 1 min , I always have 50 ( 45 ) , 35 ( 30 ) , 20 ( 15 ) & daily rests of 11,9 are + 15 mins on both .
it’s probably a bit overboard but once stung for £776 is enough for me .
