1966 Austin (BMC) VAK100 Noddy Van

You will know if they spray OK by hanging them on an injector pipe and spinning the engine over, keep bare skin out of the way though. Gardner engines were best for doing that with the pumps having priming levers! I still have some injector nozzle pricker’s ‘somewhere’ but I have more chance of finding Shergar. I THINK that the CAV injectors on the DPA pump engines were set at 175 Atmospheres originally, the Simms ones were less but then I haven’t worked on a BMC diesel since 1974 so the memory cells will be erratic. I think that I still remember most of the torque settings though, Head nuts 100 ftlbs, flywheel the same. Big end bolts 62 ftlbs, tappet setting 13thou (slack 12 as I didn’t have a 13 thou feeler blade) cylinder liner standproud 1-5 thou and about 2-5 thou backlash on the oil pump gear!

Pete.

Well, my injector overhaul didn’t make any difference to the lack of go.

Next step was to take them to an injection specialist for a test. Four were ok but a little “low”, two were dribbly, so I had two new nozzles on the offending ones and the others re-set to spec.

This still left me with no fuel getting out of them, so I had to bite the bullet and get the pump done too. This was not cheap. Still, I should get most, if not all, of the money invested in the engine back when it comes time to sell it on.

Anyhow. Cut a long story short, at close of play tonight I had re-fitted the pump and injectors, drained and re-filled the fuel tank, swapped the filters again and was at this point:

Money well spent Glen, don’t forget to slacken two injector pipes at the injectors while spinning the engine over for the first start to get air out of the pipes.

Pete.

As they were all freshly installed I bled them all up. The video is the first proper try at getting it to start; it genuinely caught that quickly.

Managed to get the stuck clutch freed off and have jury-rigged a radiator on it. Water pump leaks quite badly, but holds water well enough to get it driving around the yard under its own steam.

Next job is to get it home so that the proper work can begin.

Just watched both videos. MAGIC! You are to be admired and congratulated. Jim.

Thanks, much appreciated.

It is now home!

I have a great deal of DIY to do in the house before work can begin properly on it, but at least it’s outside my garage now and not a couple of miles away outside someone else’s. I’ll be able to chip away at little jobs like fixing the hole in the roof and side, and making it weathertight.

The next big hurdle is to strip the Daf donor lorry and dispose of all the bits I’m not going to need from it. Once that is done I’ll hopefully be into the better weather next year and have done enough on the house to keep SWMBO happy. Then I can start on pulling the engine from the Austin and the chassis repairs.

I shall keep you posted.

Cheers, Glen.

I can hear the sound that train makes in my mind’s ‘ear’ as if it were yesterday. A wonderful workaday drama of a noise!! Robert

That’s a very atmospheric shot. Thanks for sharing it. I must try and get all the photos linked on this thread into one place.

Looks like another one has found it’s way into preservation via the fairgrounds and storage shed route. Hopefully the owner will use the internet to research it and stumble across this thread or the others I have running in parallel on other forums.

Hi Glen,

Any updates?

Yes. That’s the one from Reigate I looked at and got mucked about by the seller a couple of years ago, before I bought the one I have. It was eventually bought by the bloke that is now selling it. I’ve been in touch with him and he’s basically selling because it wants too much work. Believe it or not, despite at first glance being much tidier than mine, it wants just as much work as mine does in all the same areas.

Hi Glen,

Any updates?

Nothing of worth. Other than cleaning it and filling the back with the contents of my old lock-up I’ve been too busy (or the weather has been too bad) to make any kind of headway. I do have a buyer for the original engine and gearbox, and they are destined to repower another Noddy van that has lost its engine, so I’m hoping to get that stripped out and gone before too much longer. I’m trying to juggle too many things at once at the moment but I’d like to clear the donor DAF out of the way this year.
Glen.

Things have been slow, with too many other things to do and I haven’t been able to do anything physical to the lorry, but I took a couple of days out in July to return to the yard in Lincolnshire I visited a couple of years ago, the one where there was three hulks lying if you remember.

I’d arranged to scavenge over them, and spent a happy two days fighting brambles and nettles to get some cab doors, windows, gutter trim and a fair bit of rear roller-shutter door. Pictures below for your delectation and delight:

Great Video. You’re a brave man to take that sort of project on. I did hundreds of miles in a 4 pot diesel FG. They were an F88 compared to the BRS “Noddy” but the rarety will put a smile on your face when you drive it down the road! Jim.
