PAUL GEE's PHOTO COLLECTION

Remember when going scotch (if from the south), or going down to the smoke (if from the north), was long distance?
When Middle East work was readily available?.
When driving a 111 or F89 meant you were truly the king of the road?
Recall those companies long gone, where every day was an adventure?

What ever happened to those drivers you spent hours with.. where did they go? and recollect on those characters in the industry sadly no longer with us.
This forum is for us all to indulge in a little nostalgia and remember with rose coloured glasses how much better it was in the olden days

To my knowledge, Unic never sold lorries in England during the 50/70th . But they sold a lot Unic George Richard ( founder of the factory) as taxis in the beginning of the 1900 th to London city.

Join the "piggy back club" ! this was a common sight in the late 60's and into the 70's, particularly Scottish firms such as Sam Anderson. These two Bewick motors are on their way to Ellesmere Port IIRC when we had regular Russian pulp ships in and provided the bales of pulp were loaded straight onto "wheels" and didn't touch the dock the Mill didn't have to pay port fees ! so it was always a desperate panic to at short notice to get as many trailers into Ellesmere to load as much as possible straight onto trailers . The rest went into the Shed and we worked away on it over the following couple of weeks ! Cheers Bewick.

michel wrote:These Unic T 340 were built by Unic in their factory in Trappes ,west from Paris, the engine was a V8 one and gearbox was a 8 range homemade. The "group" cab was tilting , same as a Fiat one which did'nt on the Italian range.
It seems that the first one is from the Multi-Transport company who still exists in Le Puy en Velay ,but mainly owns Daf,Man and Mercedes.
The freight could be Michelin tyres.

Michel, Thanks for the information. Out of intrest, does anyone know if the Unic brand was sold in the UK ?
I know the Fiat with the same cab was,but a french driver was asking me if Unic's were sold here. Although i
remember seeing Unic's i dont know if they were actually marketed here ???

Funny you should mention that i thought exactly the same when i saw the sheet blowing in the wind. If you
look at the driver it looks like hes checking his mirror ! Probably muttering to himself .

Indeed Coomsey lad, I was told once it was a one off to celebrate the silver jubilee of '77. It's a superb photo.

And to Dean - I know a chap that is compiling a book on Tarmac's history and would love to include the pic in his book. Full copyright details will be included and Paul will be mentioned in the acknowledgements.
Always on the lookout for khaki Tarmac tipper pics.
Know of any ? ;)

Hi Harvey,

Hope you are keeping well, the Marshall Major from memory had the AV760 engine, and was available as a 6x2/6x4/8x2/8x4 Rigid,it had a bit more power than my old Marshall 6x4 with the AV505 I had on round timber down Dean's part of the world.

And to Dean - I know a chap that is compiling a book on Tarmac's history and would love to include the pic in his book. Full copyright details will be included and Paul will be mentioned in the acknowledgements.

Hello chap, Paul has contacted me today and says thats fine he can use the photo. If you PM me your email address i will send it over once Paul has sent me the full scale scan of it. He did mention something about
50% of the profits of the book !! :D

Many thanks to you and Paul for all the photo's,great to see them all out working and earning,as already mentioned not many of us carried a camera in those days, and also couldn't afford the developing and printing costs on £20 a week !

Richard

Indeed Richard he had to stop for a period himself due to the costs !

Hi Harvey,

Hope you are keeping well, the Marshall Major from memory had the AV760 engine, and was available as a 6x2/6x4/8x2/8x4 Rigid,it had a bit more power than my old Marshall 6x4 with the AV505 I had on round timber down Dean's part of the world.

Regards
Richard

Thanks for the info.

What a turn up, one of Ron Hennessey's tankers. I was speaking to him only recently and he will be chuffed that there are photos out there of some of his fleet. I dare not put his "history" on here, suffice it to say he was one of the industry's characters.

When I saw the pic of the Morris ERF it rang a few bells, Keith, but although I recognised the 8-wheeler, I just couldn't get the lonely memory cell to proceed with any further details. The lorry I remember, the name I also remember but I'm afraid we will have to rely on someone with a better memory to provide more information. It may have helped if the address had been a little clearer- my calor gas-powered PC doesn't do the technology for that!
Anyone help?
