I’d be interested to know the opinions of the more .ahem. ‘experienced and mature’ drivers here on this forum regarding the ever increasing reliance on the internet by those coming in to our industry…

On a personal note, I read some of the guff asked on TN and I despair, I really do - particularly in the last 5 years or so…

Back in the halcyon good ole days pre-internet, we learned by asking other drivers. Most people these days are used to getting instant answers at the press of a few buttons. For specialist knowledge we go to a specialist forum; so for truck drivers - trucknet.

Surely the main purpose of a forum like this is to help other drivers? No doubt budding pilots and trainee vets have something similar.

its really quite simple, the new lads used to ask the old hands what the craic was in the yard. These days, nobody wants to talk to anybody so people ask on the internet instead.

Nothing there to say the guy hasn’t got a clue whatsoever, maybe hes just after asking the opinions of those who have walked before him?

Personally I think your response is a bit terse then dragging it over here for a pat on the back makes you look childish.

Personally I think your answer to him was disgusting.

The internet is a good thing, it allows people to find out all kinds of stuff saving them from the headaches we used to have years ago. I’ve saved countless hours of frustration looking at delivery locations I’ve never been to before, many times finding out they need to be approached from a certain direction and before I get there knowing whether I can drive in or need to reverse in. With varying reliability I can find out in advance when roads are closed, I can check whether an accident or weather has closed the A66 allowing me to take and plan for an alternative. If I want to know something I’ve got a wider source of information than just the odd driver I may come across who may or may not be right.

+1 ^^, only the other day after a road closure I went onto google earth to plan an alternative route to my destination and I’m glad I did as the route I was favouring wasn’t suitable so good old internet saved me from a possible sticky situation.

The post was written by me… and personally i just choose to ignore the childish attitude that i’m asking on recommendations? I’m not asking how to pass my driving test. As a new pass you are right, we will get a shock out on the road and we look up to veteran and experienced truckers for assistance? Unfortunately as I’m not on the road yet i don’t have the privilege of asking other drivers. However it will be the same question i ask the lads who i’ll be working along side, the driver trainer etc because the last mistake i want to do is go in it 2 foot deep and make a huge mistake because i didn’t have that torch light i needed to do vehicle checks in the dark or something greatly essential that i would have never thought of…

I thought that’s what this forum was for, yes i can read through all the previous posts and have done for that matter but what if there is a newbie to this forum like myself who can recommend something they couldn’t on an older post? It would be missed, surely it doesn’t hurt to ask a question that’s been asked before for some newer and updated information.

No disrespect but i can see why so many people want to leave the industry because the negativity seems to be outweighing the positive. As a newbie to the industry i would have expected a better example to be set… and us young’uns are the bad people in society huhhhh?!!

Happy trucking people

It’s not just people coming into the industry, I frequently use the internet at work to find delivery points etc. Thirty-odd years ago I would have stopped and asked at a petrol station, but the world has changed since 1986. What are the odds nowadays that petrol station staff would have local knowledge?

Good luck bigladtrucker, don’t be afraid to ask. I’ve been driving lorries and buses since 1968, although now only occasionally, I’m still learning. Anyone who thinks they know it all is deluding themself! Ps. I struggle with the modern technology so if I need info I get my young son (he’s only 50)  to help me out . I’m glad I’m not starting out now, I think we had the best of the job when I was a young man. But we still had the the ■■■■ orifices who knew it all
Regards Kev.

All you’ve done here Graham is show yourself to be one of the sour old grumps this industry is unfortunately full of. One of those who don’t want to or simply don’t have the mental capacity to move with the times. Modern technology is a wonderful aid in this job and something that you’d be a fool not to take advantage of, it’s not the 80’s anymore.

I have asked older more experienced heads in my yard about delivery points, mainly if I’m honest as an ice breaker, and got smirky faces back saying I don’t know and worse purposefully wrong directions. Not all drivers are like that I know, but I stick with a good HGV sat nav, google maps and an HGV atlas and if in doubt ask a local. Before long you know your way about

If it’s anything like the petrol station staff round my way, they drive a taxi on the side

As one of the "more .ahem. ‘experienced and mature’ drivers ", whose opion you seek, I’m more than happy to oblige.
You, sir, are the reason why I, and so many of my fellow drivers, upon entering an area were other drivers are present, busy ourselves on our phones…
Anything rather than having to listen to the likes of you…

The poster the OP referred to is a new driver asking about what he might need to go tramping.

OK, so the question has been asked before and it will no doubt be asked again, but there’s no harm in a poster starting a new thread where replies can be tailored to his individual circumstances.

I see a lot of threads in which I have no worthwhile contribution to make, my solution is to move on without making snide comments to a thread in which I can post something of help. :stuck_out_tongue:

Has anyone advised him to make sure he has enough “smoke” to see him through whilst tramping.
This is because tramping is a thing that is actually damaging to your health, will most certainly shorten your life and be responsible for many diseases whilst you endure it, not to mention the psychological complications that will be endured and the lack of human contact, meaning you will not be properly socialised……FFS, even the RSPCA ensure a dog is socialised before it is allowed out to mix with other dogs, but apparently it is perfectly acceptable to let humans out in to the public without this condition……

I could go on, but it is getting boring…

I think I’m missing something here! WTF Are are you on?

Random crap removed.

This helps too…

I agree, that’s why I have only been on here a handful of times over the past few years. :unamused:
Quite a few so called “lorry drivers” are just smart arses, who take great delight in trying to belittle and slag other people off to make themselves feel better about their empty purposeless lives and not happy enough about posting a ■■■■ response on a newbie forum decides to massage his massive ego further by trying to get further attention on the PDF?
Grow up man, you’re not at school anymore picking on the new kids!!!
