Your opinion on pay

Thats my point ADY1, whereas I,m taking my time your trying to get home as soon as you can, when you get delayed its bringing your hourly rate down as your only getting 11 hours pay and its going to take you 12!

I’ve done some hourly paid agency work earlier this year & i did find it much more relaxing. I don’t take the p as some do as originally worked for an owner driver & then my own truck, i’m used to the ethos of being there to get the job done.

Where i am now (3rd time in 4 yrs i’ve worked for them) we do not get salary or hourly.

Weekdays are day rate + bonus. Bonus kicks in at 690 points. 1 km = 1 point. 1 load = 120 points. As i normally work Fri - Mon & Fridays being what they are on the road, i don’t expect to get into bonus that day. It really is a bonus if i do.

W/ends is productivity only. i.e. kms + loads. Most w/end work is trailer positioning, so can get some load count in. … and each point is worth a few more pence at w/ends.

Inc. n/o allowance if i don’t score £100 for Friday, £200 Sat and £150 Sunday i’m disappointed. But its out of my control & all down to my planner & traffic.

Yes, i can earn the money, BUT, there is the feeling of needing to press on.

However, i’ve nowe got passed the point of going like a mad man for an extra £5 or £10 a day. Sit at 88kph usually.

you must spend a hell of a long time checking your wage slip against everything you did that week, kms, loads.

Although not straight forward, its actually quite easy. A print out is given of the productive units. (i.e. kms + loads) Not job by job, that’s not necessary.
Very easy to work out at w/ends: units x pence per unit.
Week days just subtract 690 from the days units, anything over x pence per unit.
Takes 5 mins to check it.

Only prob is now with not handing tachos in until week 4, got to wait a month b4 productivity pay kicks in :frowning:

28000 salery 48hrs decent cant beat it

Wouldn’t get out of bed for that.

How is hourly pay safer than salary, where I work I,m happy taking my time and doing a single run in a ten hour day, taking proper breaks, whereas an agency worker who is paid hourly will race back to depot to get a second run and do 15 hours probably tipping on break, so whos the biggest risk, me having steady run all day or hourly paid agency worker racing around all day to do two runs?
I dont see how ROG thinks working 60 hours is safer than only 48 hours. Its not job and finish as ADY seems to think, instead of encouraging drivers to rush about it has the opposite effect, we try to make the job last as long as possible to get our hours in with doing the least possible work. I dont have to put it on POA every time the wheels stop turning so I can do lots of “overtime”.

Generally, if a driver is not hourly paid they will try to do the least hours for the pay given, therefore encouraging speeding etc. It is also less stressfull as sitting in a queue whilst being paid for it must make you smile

thats not true rog,
im salaried,just like mikermhh.
my hours are based on an average 48 hour week also. if i cut a job up and did it in a few hour less then what it should take, then i would get another run to get my hours back up. so i pootle about and then if my hours are to high i get a few days off. :sunglasses:

I agree with your situation Dave but a lot of others have different contracts.

Salary for agreed basic hours, overtime if you exceed them at a pro rata hourly rate and a half.

Same as,
I am on a 40 hour salaried week so dont have to kill myself for the overtime.

Well I’m on 44.5 which includes every other saturday morning, the money could be better but it’s ok. Overtime means if you get back half an hour late once in a blue moon you get paid for it.

But yeah, I think with this system as long as you’re happy with the basic and happy with the overtime you are getting (or not getting) at least you never lose…you’ll never be rushed (as long as they can plan routes properly) or working for free.

I think the money could always be better,
Were on job and knock so not too bad,
12 hours Tues (4 hours OT)
11 Hours Weds (3 hours OT)
4 Hours today :sunglasses:

If I am being honest I wouldnt mind doing an extra 2 hours a day OT just to keep me out of mischeif.

yeah right i bet you dont get that osset would be very surprized if you did

I don’t want to go on the clock, they would find out how little I actually do…

Horses for courses i think, but one thing i’ve noticed is when FLT bod says “oohhh cant tip you for a couple of hours drive” and i turn round and say “thats ok mate take as long as you like im paid by the hour” they always then seem to manage to get me tipped inside 30 mins  [zb]ers :imp:

scanny245 method if pennies in bank dont match aggro and sweat involved in said pennies in bank i hoof it to another career enhancing position

Hourly seems better for me.
I’m on agency at the moment, and it’s nice to know, if I’m delayed, I get paid.
I got back to Portsmouth on Saturday night at about 23.45, about the 3rd truck off the boat, then I got the big X and had to spend 45 minutes with C&E crawling all over the empty fridge !
If I had been on salary, that would have p’d me off, but as I still had 7 hours driving time and 6 hours working time left, it didn’t bother me at all. (not that there was anything I could do about it).

I have to confess I like the mileage pay. I do less hours for more money this way, don’t have to account for what I do with any of my time so long as the job gets done, and am not pushed to fulfil a contracted minimum. Suits me, but I know it’s not for everyone.

I work for agencies now, the drivers attitude to time out on the road depends on the job and what he is doing. Usually as a agency driver you are booked out for 8 hours anyways. I’ve done shifts from Glasgow to ■■■■■■■■■■■ 1 drop and finished shift done in just over 2 hours walked away with 8 hours pay. So guess you don’t want to be hanging about.

Other times your doing a shift which maybe take you bang on 8 hours so you maybe hang back a bit to get an hours overtime just depends.

I did a run in January company needed two drivers on the monday night and one for the rest of the week. I was only booked in the one night, the other agency driver in all week. The run was from Glasgow to Tebay, swap trailers come back up the road. 2hrs 30min each way. The other driver left at 7.30pm i left at 8pm got there before him, swaped trailers put it on break had a coffee and a chat came back up the road, parked truck in bay went home. 6 hour shift on night rates paid for my 8 hours i was happy. Other agency driver got greedy really dragged the shift out, stoped at several times on the way down, and on the way back up dragged it out to a 9 hour shift got himself an hours extra overtime but the company called up agency said didnt want him in the rest of the week and i got the job for the rest of the week.

So his extra 1 hours pay cost him 32hours over the week, which in the middle of january when there is little work is a bit of a blow.

Saying that worked as a agency driver for a large company and their run from Glasgow to Gateshead was a 12 hour shift. Even tho could be done a lot faster than that.

i think Kenny has the same attitude as me. if there is no overtime, get it done and go home. if its a long shift anyway, what difference will an extra hour make to them?
