Squiddy:
What would be nice would be a separate road sign just for truck speed limits. eg a national speed limit sign on its own on a single carriageway would mean 60 for cars and 40 for lorries, but a national speed limit sign with a separate truck sign showing 50 beneath could mean 60 for cars and 50 for trucks.
Foxstein:
‘…I think the 40mph speed limit was set in the 70’s to save fuel as there was a fuel shortage, and it hasn’t changed since…’
As I understand it, that figure now approximates to the federalist EU decision of 60kmph being their decision for our formally British regulated, single carriageways.
Thus ‘…it hasn’t changed since…’ because it’s beyond British jurisdiction to significantly confront the EU on the matter.
Ask and challenge your Lib/Lab/Con puppet MP on the subject; they may flannel & squirm - but you’ll find this to be the case which is why blind-eyes & heads are buried in the sand on the whole 40 mph on SC issue

If this is the case then why is Germany for eg 70 km and Italy
France is 60 km but 80km for a rigid - but normaly ok with you going faster as long as could see on tachos you slowed down for villages (have been pulled several times on national once had eye brow raised pointed to speed for villages and all ok)
Plus the new 80mph here goverment looking at it not eu plus car side other countries have higher limits to us
only eu thing im sure on is speed limiters at top speed for trucks - but i could be wrong
gadge:
i now just this week go over the abington road to the m74 at 40mph after last week getting done for speeding , 51mph , but i can still make warrington in 4hrs 10min. only 5 mins longer , but going over the road at 40 i feel is more dangerous as a build up of cars desperate to pass has near caused an accident every day this week , but at the end of the day its the law and i will be sticking to it
The 40 mph in places is pathetic, but its the law.I drive at 38 mph, and reap the rewards after 48 hours, (£19 an hour) so why should I break the law ?
There should be a survey etc etc to increase/decrease the speed on obvious routes…

CC at 40 tires me more than using the foot pedal; Must be a concentration thing.

You make very sound points whilst mine were somewhat shot from the hip: However, we may appreciate that whilst other nation’s leaders are treating their citizens with progressive limit structuring, ours are oblivious to there even being a need to address ours or even that UK driver’s aren’t best chuffed with being treated like sheep…

Camera van threshold for HGV’s triggers at 50
Does in my area anyway.
Yeah, depending on area it can be as low as 46 i reckon.
When Police/Vosa use our weighbridge, one of our drivers asked what the threshold is, and the regular copper who deals with lorries arou.d here said “47 is very touch and go.” He did say the majority of police he knows give more leeway than the cameras as they agree 50mph doesn’t mean dangerous driving. He did advise not have too much 80kmh showing on tachos as driver behaviour earlier in the day could be taken into account in the event of an accident.

Interesting that plod is speaking in metric: That’ll be the EU telling us how to measure things then.
Edited to add that the A420 westbound camera by Shrivenham into Swindon recently pinged a (working lorry) colleague at ‘…48mph…’ - so at least the Wilt’s plod still use Imperial, bless them… (Was there once a post dedicated to this subject on this road?)
ill be honest if in a built up area ie schools etc i go under 40
however on a normal s/c i go as fast as the traffic lets me,
and yep ive got 6 points if anyone was wondering

Or the fact our tachos work in kmh. I’ve no probs using km instead of miles as I was taught in metric at school.
I use mpg as opposed to km/litre though.
The Shrivenham camera is maintained by Oxfordshire, the next one by the viaduct is Wiltshire.
