Squiddy:
What would be nice would be a separate road sign just for truck speed limits. eg a national speed limit sign on its own on a single carriageway would mean 60 for cars and 40 for lorries, but a national speed limit sign with a separate truck sign showing 50 beneath could mean 60 for cars and 50 for trucks.
NathanB:
If everyone stuck to it and caused a bit of “disruption” the limit might be increased due to the outcry. As it is, the teararses provide a nice little earner in fines and courses.
Has anyone actually been told by their employer to speed up?
That’s worth trying! Wouldn’t take long before the Daily mail brigade would be on the warpath…
Exactly what we should all do…And any employer is breaking the law of H&S to request that you go faster
Should be a national campaign wheeled out, in order to educate the public
Use to stick to the limits. Makes me laugh how many people say they do 40, I rarely get stuck behind lorries doing less than 50, even been overtake whilst doing 50.
NathanB:
‘…Just wondered how many TNUK members actually bother with the 40mph limit for LGVs…?’
I’m wondering why you’re interested; maybe you’re trying to establish what practice to adopt?
In line with no-one really caring and as an often lead-footed, trolley ponce (?), I do what I want, when I want mindful that no authority where I go seems to overly care 99.999% of the time. My challenge is to be alert for the 0.001% chance that someone does care or when something otherwise exciting is about.
Besides, what percentage of non-vocational (ie, professional) drivers actually remembers - or even ever knew - that different limits apply to lorries, etc?
Otherwise, good work on rattling some amusingly polarised and well practised views on this confrontational chestnut.
I spend a lot of time on sc’s & i hardly ever see any tucks doing 40mph, most of them speed past giving me abuse when they get the chance. Don’t see why you all want to risk your licences racing around when your boss probably wouldn’t give you any thanks & certainly wouldn’t pay your fines. A lot of you come on here moaning about car drivers doing stupid things when really you have no right. Your just as bad as them in fact your worse. Your supposed to be professional drivers but think it’s ok for you to break the law whenever you feel. When are you going to realise by racing about you do yourself no favours

Professionals…Yeah right
Hmmm. Pluss theres the ones who try and justify it to be right . I wouldn’t mind betting that all the drivers who do so (break / bend the rules) do it because they’ve never been caught. Its only a matter of time! I slowed down because I learnt the hard way back in 2008.
Well, I drive according to the conditions & at a speed I feel comfortable with, not the speed limit, i’m on the limiter on single’s if the road and traffic allows it. Only been banned once in 20 odd years & that was in the car, maybe 2x3 points apart from the ban also in the car. Having said that if I come up behind someone doing 40mph then it doesn’t bother me too much, horses for courses.

i now just this week go over the abington road to the m74 at 40mph after last week getting done for speeding , 51mph , but i can still make warrington in 4hrs 10min. only 5 mins longer , but going over the road at 40 i feel is more dangerous as a build up of cars desperate to pass has near caused an accident every day this week , but at the end of the day its the law and i will be sticking to it

I’ve still got a clean licence, 5yrs hgv, 7yrs pcv before that, have a quick car and motorbike, motorbike licence for 12yrs, had 6 points (1 offence) in my driving time for speeding on my motorbike.
My mate who used to speed in his truck, 2 tickets in 1 month, 1 on A556 and 1 on A41, both pretty decent roads, doesn’t help when you get the ticket before you see the van.
40mph is the limit, average wage for hgv drivers is around 8 quid an hour? 8hrs = 64 quid before tax, ni, fuel to work, dinners etc. Fine = 60 quid… Working for ■■■■ all
I tell you what used to be a right pain. Trying to overtake Culina lorries doing 40mph on the A41 in my old LHD motor with a full load of bananas or oranges on. A menace they were…

Then don’t overtake if they’re doing 40
Were you joking, there’s a lot of laughy smileys, but never sure with you tbh

I am joking, I wouldn’t try that in a left ■■■■■■.
At 40 cars get ■■■■■■ off and try doing stupid over takes
At 45-50 they tend to sit behind till safer to pass.
We have better brakes better vision since the 40 limit was set
These makes a difference but when need be with road conditions your a lot slower than 40 common sence .

Maybe they’re also the one that are aware that there’s no heart to prosecute where it’s frankly just an EU blanket smothering the subject to the (as is indicated on this thread) confusing, confrontational and ill-lead detriment of Britain managing it’s own roads and transport flow, etc
