Yep… Remember it well. Used to do S.Wales a lot and had to go that way once due to the Royal Welsh Show week when they did a temporary lift on the weight limit A short nasty climb but caught me out!!!..

stobbys aint got the guts to do the a6 shap in winter.
lad I worked with rolled a coach at hucks brow in dec 92. Was heading south and hit ice just before the farm at the bottom (the bridge). Clipped the phone box with his n/s front (going up hill backwards tacho showed 60 to standstill in an instant).
He took top foot of the wall as he flipped over the wall stopping just before the drop in to the valley.
The police wrote off 1 car that night.mainly as it slid down the hill into cottage wall.

shap when icy is a place for big nuts and hairy moments.

A59 descent Blubberhouses into Bolton Abbey brings memories back to me. Early 90,s and was driving a B series ERF 265 Rolls/Spicer gearbox on containers out of Teesport. Drove to Hull one day and braking didn,t feel right so tipped , back empty to Teesport and fitter had check over of vehicle and trailer, everything adjusted and working. Loaded next day for Preston 38 tonnes.
Drove through Harrogate and brakes still didn,t feel great, but carried on as you do. So at top of Blubberhouses and started descent mindful of brakes so kept low gear and stayed off brakes as much as possible
This was before Bolton Abbey was bypassed and so at very end of descent there was a steep incline which then went over the old bridge which had a set of traffic lights on it.
So on hitting this last steep descent i,m in a low gear ,braking and gathering speed and approaching lights which are on red and there is a little old lady sat in a Mini Metro unaware of the situation coming at her.
It felt like a slow motion film as slowly but surely creeped up to the car braking all the time ,then the lights changed to green but the car seemed to take an eternity to move and I really thought that,s it I,m going to crash into her then thankfully the car moved forward and over the bridge we both went with me literally 2 foot off her bumper!
I am not kidding I was in shock my knees were trembling, couldn,t change gear at first, then looked in mirrors and there was smoke everywhere. Drove to layby parked up and rang boss to say can,t go any further, explaining what had just happened. Sat and waited for another driver to come out. On Inspecting vehicle found the heat from the brakes blew both rear hub oil seals, and when checked trailer brakes they were stone cold, so had been braking on the unit alone. It wasn,t until unit was back in garage that a defect was found on a valve on the air system, but was only occurring intermittently . To this day still brings cold sweats out when thinking of what could have happened.

A9 @ Berriedale.
Tight uphill bend. Must take all road.
Like a lottery as you can’t see oncoming vehicles!
DAF 510 44t 1st high all way up!

Ps. The one at the top of screenshot!

same place at berridale for me,though it as mid 70s on the old road…1st truck, big j4.180 gardner,5 speed box, complete scrapheap.the passenger door was welded shut as it had previously fallen off with rust…brakes shot to ■■■■ as it was a complete cowboy operation I worked for,i had already ran the trailer up a bank to stop earlier, hadn’t a ■■■■■ clue about anything apart from being mad for tar,the load had to get there…into 1st gear at the top…kept it there with my foot on the brakes and the dead man on and off all the way down and back up again, and all the way with the drivers door hanging wide open in case I bottled it and had to jump…shaking like a ■■■■■■■■ dog all the way. it was almost as bad coming back empty…oh those good old days…

A494 between Dolgellau and Dinas Mawddwy will test your brakes,or power.

This ones a bit challenging

A fully loaded artic up kirkstone pass in the middle of winter, snow, sheep, fog it was torture.

The-Snowman:
The A9 heading towards Perth from Stirling there is a hill climb that is a toughie with a full load. It climbs steeply for about 2 miles. I was taking a fully loaded container to Aberdeen once and was going down the gears like they were going out of fashion. Missed one and almost ground to a halt! Was in 2nd low (manual GB on 2003 Scania) for about a miles climb of 10mph!
If I remember right a mobility scooter passed me!

You need to get out more, you ping up that hill at 56 without sweating. Hills you should be talking about here are when you are wondering if your going to have to be chinooked out

Hell… this was opening post on here. Did’nt know it would surface again.

Safe journeys everyone…

Do not go up Porlock Hill with artic ! The chassis rails on trailer hit the ground on last hairpin and you are mega stuck .
If you need to go to Lynton you have to go all the way back across exmoor . when you get to X roads before Watersmeet the same thing may happen again !
Best route is to refuse to take an artic between Porlock and Lynton .You will suffer . rigids fine .

Worst hill i ever did was Goonveen china clay mine in cornwall . was driving a dog ERF for Taylors Bedminster and was petrified . had sheet ice all way down and was just plain bowel emptying .

klunk/■■■■■■■■
Mont Cenis and mont Genevre passes

With you there yeoman, especially in the dark with snow n rain, nursing a reefer loaded with apples.5mph on the exhaust brake,1k foot drops to the right of you, like some kind of ■■■■■■ fairground ride. And don’t forget the pyrenees when the Spanish snows come calling.
Got my first euro job on reading of a double man team who had a fatal skidding over a cliff up there, brutally opportunistic on my part but my euro ■■■■ needed to be satisfied,2 years of challenging mountain work sure gets your chops in order.

If you take enough swing at the last hairpin at Hillsford Bridge you can get a 45ft trailer round as I did it but like you, I was half expecting the trailer to catch but it went round. The worst part of that road I found was the ravine road section climbing out of Lynmouth towards Barnstaple. The cliff juts out into the road really bad on some of those bends and even with the unit tight up against the stone wall on the ravine side, the trailer only just manages to clear the cliffs. And if you meet something coming the other way on that section… :open_mouth:

Hit one on the A470 the other day south of Betws-y-coed heading to Bleanau Ffestiniog whilst at 44 tonnes, not familiar with that neck of the woods & didn’t see the bugger coming! Couldn’t get bloody Opticruise to change down quickly enough. Came to a stand hill and had to start again crawl up at 5mph with the hazards on

The crimea pass, yep that does creep up on you, it doesn’t seem that steep until you loose a gear
Out of curiosity has anyone driven an artic up the Llanberis pass?

Yes I know that one ended up there by accident if you look on internet says its the steepest road in Britain I had a Qashqai and going round the corners only had 3 wheels on the road to steep for all four but when we got to the top what a view then couldnt see the road in front and suddenly the bonnet drops and down we go spectacular. Apparently it used to be a tank training range. Wouldnt even attempt it with anything bigger.

Had some scary moments abroad, especially over Tahir Pass in Turkey, but the most scary one in the uk was running from the A303 down the A37 with a loaded tank container and no baffles,it was scary on its own, especially when braking, anyhow there is a right hand bend halfway up, and because the trailer needed to go on the other side of the road because you couldnt see any traffic coming down, and had to slow for the bend, I had to reverse down a couple of times and start off in crawler, only to be beaten again, the police soon came on the scene, and i told him the problem and he went ahead of me to stop any traffic approaching the bend, it was scary to say the least as the liquid kept rolling to the rear of the tank losing me traction, i never went that way again with a tank.
