Sorry but Rikki is right, if you get any work before you are 21 then please buy me a lottery ticket.
well Sam Millar on here should then I do believe he is only 19/20 now and has CE work, and was on C work for a long time … Lewis go for it you will get a lucky break may take longer but someone will give you that break good luck and hope you pass asap.
Was talking to another haulier on Tuesday and we have both given jobs to younger drivers; we are both small companies and appreciated that someone had a burning ambition to do the job and had put themselves through the test.
The only difference it made to us was that we had an increased excess of £500 on the insurance.
Just keep trying, someone somewhere will give you a job - it beats doing a job that you don’t care for.

I drove my first artic at 18 about a week or two after passing CE and I turned 19 in July.

Appreciate the help people, thank you, i have saved around a grand for my 7.5t license, i was hoping to get a job driving them for 3 years untill im 21 then do my c+e to upgrade. I dont know anyone who is in the industry so will have to do everything myself.
Not even anywhere near enough. A CAT C licence (forget the 7.5t one) will cost over £1500 plus a medical (£100). You’ll then need to do the DCPC course before you can be employed as a HGV driver (£400) and you’ll need a digital tacho card (£39).
Realistically you need around £2500.
As for jobs, look for companies doing HGV driver apprentices.

Pay 100 for a medical and consider yourself ripped off - most can be had for about half that
If you are saying that he will have to do 35 hours of dcpc before driving commercially then you are incorrect
For a driver with no LGV on their licence they will need to pass the initial dcpc for commercial driving and that lasts for 5 years

oh here we go, Conor talking ■■■■■■■■ again
you really should be on stage with that act, you would earn a fortune
now, to the OP, i personally know of quite a number of young drivers under 20 when they started their driving career, some of them are on here too
1 driver in question, was doing some experience work with one of my drivers, and ended up getting a job with the company that he was pulling for, they also have got a few other young drivers on their books
there is the driver that The Big Un mentioned, i know him and his father
don’t give up hope, go for the licences and keep searching for a job, they are there to be had
your location might be of help in the job search, some members might know of something going
I’m 23 and have been driving class1 for a wee while and I was let loose in an artic 2 days after I passed my test long story short if you can get a company to sponsor you in a way and say they’ll give you the chance, you can go through your class 2 + class 1 at 18 through the young drives scheme as long as you have only 3 points or less on your licence. The test is a bit tougher but if you manage that your laughing and I’m not sure but there used to be a grant given to the company but that’s still on the go or not I don’t know. My age hasn’t really been a factor as someone’s got to learn to take over from the old timers before they need stair lifts to get out their cabs lol
try the local tipper /skip firms, some of the places ive worked arent fussed about experience as long as you have the licence-just a matter of calling in at the right time(if theyre really busy or just sacked someone or a couple of drivers have jacked for instance)
be prepared to be thrown in at the deep end though! but dont be afraid to ask the old hands, most will be glad to help you out, just use your commonsence and watch and learn from the other drivers.
go for it-as long as youre not a ■■■■■■■ idiot someone will give you a chance

Im 17, 18 in november, my whole life ive always wanted to be a lorry driver. A question i have is, at 18 you can only drive 7.5t trucks, if i was to get my licence would i get a job as i have no experience?
Yes, you would. Maybe not straight away but over the course of your lifetime you will recoup the cost of the training many times over. We are in recession now but we won’t be in recession forever. My advice would be to go for it.

True.
But from the other hand: it is very likely that during your lifespan we will have automated lorries driving our roads, therefore making the drivers reduntant. So maybe instead of trying really hard to become a driver today, it would be worth to use that time to stay in education instead and gain some qualifications - maybe some trade, or maybe some logistics or spedition certificate…
Say, to train as a electric engineer and drive Know-How lorry in spare time, fixing washing mashines… Or to train as a speditor and therefore be better prepared to start your own business when the better times will come… Or to learn the language and go to find a job in country that has haulage industry in better condition…
