My son who is 16 wants to follow in my footsteps and become an LGV driver, can anyone help with advice as to how these young driver schemes work and can anyone supply me with a link to find out more information.
We live on the Wirral so someone local to the area with a scheme would be realy helpful.

Scheme members can then gain a Class 3 LGV license through further training

Thought Class 3 was no more??

Young drivers must stay with a company in the scheme.

The Young Driver must remain with an approved Company throughout their training and can only drive LGVs belonging to the company. If the Young Driver was to leave their employer during training their LGV licence will be revoked by the RHDTC, unless they go to another approved company.

What about when you’ve passed, how long do you have to stay with a company thats part of the scheme to “repay” your training fees because I wouldnt have thought you could walk away with your brand new licence. If you’ve got to stay with an approved company then it kind of limits your future job options.

Probably explains why they offer the young driver scheme.

I’m sure they mean class 2, or more accurately C not 3. I agree with your last paragraph as there is no mention as to how long you have to stay or when you can move off the approved company list.

just looked at the DfT website, funding is available for young drivers up to 25 years old under a modern apprenticeship

Expansion of the Young Drivers Scheme to help companies recruit trainees between the ages of 16
and 21 on a structured training programme. This offers the chance to obtain an LGV category C
licence at 18 rather than 21.
Changes in Learning and Skills Council (LSC) funding rules for Modern Apprenticeships now allow
funding up to the age of 25 instead of the previous 19. Therefore, the Young Drivers Scheme has
become embedded within a Modern Apprenticeship supported by LSC funding for trainees in the 16
to 24 age group to ensure that the qualification is sustainable after the Road Haulage Modernisation
Fund.

As I read it, the young driver has to stay with an approved company until they reach 21

Trainees must remain employed by a registered employer throughout the entire duration of their training
under the scheme. A trainee who is not employed by a registered employer will be removed from the
Scheme. A former trainee who has left the Scheme is not authorised to drive a large goods vehicle (a
goods vehicle with a maximum plated weight greater than 7.5 tonnes) until he or she reaches the age of
21 years. If the former trainee drives a large goods vehicle before reaching 21 years of age, he or she is
driving otherwise than in accordance with the conditions of his or her licence and risks prosecution under
section 87 of the Road Traffic Act 1988.
