Get this all the time, job centre staff say this is not allowed, for an employer to turn you down due to distance,as ACAS can investigate this. They hang up,as soon as you say you live in Timbucktoo,my theory is,if you really want the job,it doesnt matter where you live,as if tramping in europe for months on end,you would not touch base, and have the truck serviced abroad and take weekly rests over the water. It is possible to buy a cheap camper van,for when the truck is in the garage in the UK,or use a poste restante,at the post office for the boss to send your post and pay checks, etc, etc.Or even a cheap room near to the depot or truck base in the UK.
most employer will never give a reason why you did not get the job, its there choice how there deal with each person that there interview i have applied for over 450 jobs in 12 months and only had 4 interviews and two of them were in the same week,
most of them have never replied to my enquiry i also cold call to many companies and the same there all say not hiring at the mo
no employer will say why there did not give you the job for the reason you have said some one may get them done for it
and there don’t have to tell you either, most usually put in the job add if you don’t here from use with in 4 week you have not be successful
I tried for retained fire and rescue position, they needed me to work nights to cover the shortfall in week days cover on the roster system. As being unemployed, they said with the money spent on training,i may give up,to get a full time job, that may be over 4 minutes attendance time to get to the fire station in time when called in.There are current firefighter jobs at Corsham fire station and across the wiltshire area.£3 call out disturbance fee, then about £10 per hour, and a few grand a year to be on the roster, thing is you are stuck in the house all day to answer the bleeper.
Bring back discrimination that’s what I say. When companies where allowed to ask for exactly what they wanted you knew straight away when you fitted the bill and you did’nt waste your time on all this politically correct stuff.Companies still know exactly what they want and they still discriminate except they have to keep quiet about it.I would have saved a lot of money had I known what some companies were really looking for.
Totally agree with everything that you have said Deathstar, Gone are the days when a spade was a spade ( can I say that ? )

Toby, a retained firefighter is usually someone who already has a “first” or “main” job and is a retained firefighter when on days off / rest days from this “main” job. Many retained firefighters work say, Monday to Friday daytimes so would be “on duty” for their retained service during the evenings and nights and also at weekends.Thats why some brigades say they need people to cover weekday “day times” as they can usually already cover nights and weekends from the Monday to Friday workers.
You could do this as your “main job” but you wouldnt earn much from it. You get paid a monthly retainer as well as £x for turning out to the station when the alerter goes off then a further hourly payment if the appliance goes out and you ride it. Many stations operate a rota system so that although you have booked yourself “on the run” IE available to ride, unless you get there quick, you may not actually get on the pump. Many retained stations are single or maybe double appliance stations who may only need 4 - 6 riders to turn out the pump, if you dont get there in time they wont wait for you, a house fire or RTC with persons reported for example, hence the 4 minute rule", its actually 5 minutes but you lose the first minute sorting yourself out getting out the house etc!!!
They WILLtake into account how far away you live, one of the rules is that you should be able to get to the station within the 4-5 minutes required WITHOUT breaking the speed limit. You wouldnt be “stuck in the house all day” waiting to answer your bleeper, just go about your daily business but make sure that if it does go off you can get to the station in the alloted time. There will also be a “Drill night” once a week which you would be expected to attend with catch up sessions usually being held at other times if people cant make the first session but you will be expected to attend.
Being a retained firefighter is a big commitment to your local community and can seriously disrupt your home and social life if you are not fully comitted.
Good luck if you go for it, being a firefighter is a fantastic job, but dont go Retained and expect to earn a living from it!!!
the bloke who brought my old house was originally a retained fireman,i said to him when he looked at our house surely youd be better to buy a house on the same side of town as the firestation, but he reconded he could get across town alright, not long after there was a piece in the local rag about fireman getting done for speeding whilst on the way to the firestation.it was him.
.last i heard hed go up there and stop there so he was there if a call came in
BA course is quite impressive.Exams to take, and fear of small and closed spaces is tested. The items above are correct.Job includes dealing with death, mutilated bodies, burns, chemical incidents,RTA,RTC`s.Such as cyclists impalled on iron fences,Fire and Rescue saw of the post of metal,as it acts as plug for the supply of blood in the body,if removed, simply bleed out.Surgeons remove remainder. The HR lady was concerned i would quit to find a full time job,as the cost of training is a lot,and living only on retained wages is not enough,as she stated, some weeks, there may be no call outs or shouts, then one week, there may be 5 shouts a day.It is not predictable.Unless your best mate is an arsonist,or the Mrs like to smoke in hay and straw barns down on the farm.In Somerset and Wiltshire there are many female firefighters doing a grand job,one of which is firefighter Esther Doel of Frome fire station.
